Troubles w/my Spyder

Up until now I have had a good luck w/my Spyder. I went over 12000 miles and I took it in for servicing. The next week I had a new Kumho rear tire installed. After a couple of weeks the Spyder started making noise. I don't know if there is any link between the installation of the tire and the noise I started hearing but I took the Spyder in on Aug 29. Since that time, it has been in for repair. I got a list of the items that have been ordered and while I have been waiting patiently, I am still without a Spyder. Not being mechanically inclined what would the significance be about the parts on order.

Looks like you have an oil pump failure which caused some damage to the cylinders/pistons. Interesting that they ordered pistons but not rings.

No relation to the tire.

:agree: with the probable cause of failure. Piston assy includes rings, but this is standard size piston, which makes no sense. The oversize piston is only 0.012 mm over, which is only half a thousanth of an inch larger. Correct part is more likely the piston and cylinder assembly. I think these cylinders are probably chromed or hardened, due to the lack of normal oversizes..

Oh, gee, sorry about this, but it looks like you have experienced the oil pump failure, which usually results, if not found in time, in a blown engine. Mine blew and i now have a new engine. Looks like they caught yours in time ( mine had the noise also but no one paid attention...).

Took me a month to get mine fixed, with engine replacement shipped from BRP. Your rebuild will probably be a while longer, especially if they don't have the parts yet. If your dealer still doesn't have the parts by now, then you might let Carlo know at BRP.

Well that is good to hear, I was fearful that it was a problem when they put the new tire on. Now I wonder what would have caused the oil pump failure. Since I have had my Spyder I have never had any error messages. It has been running flawlessly. Someone made the comment
that they should make sure about resurfacing the cylinder? I only wonder if it not be better to get a new engine or is that wishful thinking.

I am now wondering if it would be better to get a new engine rather than them rebuilding this one.
I had been patiently waiting and finally sent an email to Carlo on Thursday. The dealership said that they were waiting for BRP to send a few more parts. Then the question will be how long will it take for them to put it back to gether. Then someone else told me, I will be going to have to break the engine in again. So does that mean another 600 mile $400 service job?

One thing that is frustrating is waiting for your spyder to be repaired. You would almost wish that you could have a loaner. That would make the wait a little more tolerable. I wish that you can get a loaner

What would be the significance of that?

The cylinders are probably nikosilled like their 2 strokes. If they are then at 12000 miles there is very little if any wear.

If they rebuild only the oil pump, I wouldn't do another 600 mile service. I did on mine since I had a complete new engine. BTW, I didn't pay any $300 for that, either. Its basically just the oil change plus plugging it into the computer to see if the engine throws any error codes. I paid 150 and thought that ws way too much, but whatever. From now on, I do the oil changes at 3000 miles -- they can do the rest of the services.
