Trailering with cover. Should I?

Anybody have experience with towing an RT-S on an open trailer with the full cover? Not sure if I want to drive the Spyder to the upcoming rallies or trailer it.
I know before you blast me..........ryding is more fun, but being from WI, I have lots of family there and may combine a trip.

Trailering w/cover

DON'T DO IT! Leave the cover off, unless you plan on repainting anyway... If you want to trailer it and protect it, get a covered trailer... try Trailer Country Online, an eBay store... they might be able to help... that's where I'm going to get mine...

The cover will flap, and eventally damage your paint and dull your windshield. BRP advertised their Custom Cover as towable, but members here have reported damage when they did so. It is easier to clean the machine than to try to cover it...and repair the damage. I use an enclosed trailer, but my feeling is that the machine gets no worse exposure hauling it on an open trailer (frontwards) than it does riding down the road. Maybe a little more backdraft, but open is open. JMHO

Thanks guys. I think I already knew the answer, but was hoping my decision to buy the covers was justified. I am a professional detailer, so I should have known better. Can't stand to have anything not shiney!

I would not trailer it with the covers as they are for generally for storage and overnight covering. They will beat and rub your spyder...

Here are some post on this subject: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/search.php?searchid=968045

Don't feel bad about trailering it...we all love to ride but sometimes it makes sense to put it on a trailer. I will be trailering mine to spyderfeast just because of time constraints...we will be doing over 650 miles there in a day and back in a day...which I think would be hard just on the RT...:gaah::gaah:

I'm pretty sure the full cover will keep the "Love Bugs" off during the season.
Note: Florida Ryders will know what I'm talking about."

Us Texas guys know what you are talking about as well...dang love bugs and that smell when you go to clean them off the car, truck or spyder...makes me gag...

As already stated, any flexable cover that contacts your Spyder will do damage. And pretty quickly too. You're much better off just cleaning it when you get where you're going.

The only thing is be sure the tow vehicle will not be tossing rocks, etc., up on your Spyder as you drive. Other than that, an open trailer is fine.

Oh, and tow with the Spyder facing forward. it's designed to fend of weather from the front. May not fare as well sitting backwards.

Then again, I'd forget the whole trailer thing and just ride your Spyder! But then that's just me...

I don't know what you are worried about. :dontknow: I have towed my RT across Australia (East to West) and back and all the way up the East Coast from Sydney to Townsville and back, behind my Winnebago.
I have the custom cover and it is lined with a soft material that does not rub the paint. If you are worried about the little bit of flaping that does occur, then tie it down with a cord wrapped around the :spyder2:.
For those that don't know how far I have travelled, you are invited to look at a map of Australia. (Not Austria):roflblack:
Be carefull when you tie the wheels down as the coating on the rear wheel rubs of easily.:opps:
I have an open tilt trailer. The cover does not stop all the dust from getting in. Be brave and give it a go!!!!!

towing

I went to Texas from NY with a trailer . When I started out I had the spyder back forward and covered with a tarp that was tied down (I thought) very tight. By the time we got to our first destination in NC the tarp was destroyed and the Spyder looked like it was in a war. From NC to Tx and back to NY pulled the spyder on front first and no cover. Much better and better gas mileage:yes:.

Question:
What type of trailer is it? Vee-nose? Square?
If you've got some friends who are handy with plywood; you can literally build a nosecone for a square trailer that'll keep a lot of the road spray and crud off of your bike...

Look at snowmobile trailer nosecones for some ideas...

Bob, this post is 2 1/2 years old. Back then I had the Drop tail trailer. I have since upgraded to a toy hauler.

I use an open trailer and have never covered the Spyder. When you think about it it's really no different than riding it. Using a cover would just be asking for trouble.
