Trailering - covered or not?

Buggy

I see that BRP makes a cover they claim is suitable for using while trailering on a open trailer. Anyone have experience in doing that? I have never considered the idea, being worried about chafing the paint surface. I have seen more damage than good from loose covers and would rather just wash the bike when I get where I am going.

Cheers

Don't know..!!

of any around here. Tough way to find out if the new cover will not damage the spyder. Little more research, hope someone here has had some experience with this...

There's been more than a fair amount of reports concerning damage to the finish of the bikes, by trailering them with a cover in place...
Your first instinct is probably the best course of action: a quick bath for the bike, once you get it where it's going.

The BRP IS for use while trailering. NOT while trailering on an OPEN trailer. Its only for use in and enclosed trailer.

Using the cover while towing on an open trailer WILL damage the paint. Just don't do it. Trailer to where you are going and put the cover on overnight while its parked.

We purchased the BRP full cover and have used it on many long trips. Works great and no damage at all to the paint. The underneath is felt so the bike is protected.

I don't ride my spyder with a cover on it, therefore I don't see a point in trailering with a cover on it....
I agree that there is more concern with damage from the cover at high speed.

I also have the BRP full cover and have open trailered my '12 RT 10,000+ miles and the only wear I can find is located on the rear side trunks. Each has a 3/16" dia. wear spot on the lower, rear, outside corner. I put an old cotton pillow case cover over the windshield (lowered position) and wrap a ratchet strap around the middle of the windshield and down behind and under the foot pegs to keep flapping to a minimum. My concern is road debris being thrown up against the Spyder.

BRP Full Cover

I have used the full cover on my 2013 RT-L as well as my 2014 RT-L. There are specific directions for it's use on an open trailer. Be sure that you have the windshield up all the way. The cover has a soft area to protect the finish of the bike. The directions, state that you need to place a cloth across the top of the windshield, and to wrap each of the handlebar grips with a cloth, I use a microfiber cloth on each handlebar grip. When the cover is on you should make sure that the straps at the front wheels and across the center are pulled tight to keep the cover from flapping against the bike. I have trailer both of my bikes using the above directions and have not had any damage to the finish of the bike etc. If the directions that come with the cover are followed, I don't think you will have any damage to the paint. I am a happy Spyder Ryder that trailers my Spyder on long trips and then ride on daily rides.:yes:

NO COVER WHILE TRAILERING ON AN OPEN TRAILER. :lecturef_smilie::lecturef_smilie::lecturef_smilie::lecturef_smilie:

ok, makes sense to me, even with the form fitted factory cover that can happen?
As much form fitting they are, as you drive the wind actually pulls and stretches the cover, which over time will make it loose fitting and thats when it will rub even more on the paint as it starts to flap around more.

I use that cover for summer storage in my backyard. The cover has a soft lining to protect the plastic panels from chaffing. Having said that though I would not use the cover while trailering the spyder because the cover fits loose around the side panels and fits very loose around the windshield. The put my 2010 RTS windshield in the upright position when I cover the spyder because a strong wind will move the cover. The cover has straps for the front and across the center and is tight fitted around the back end. I have used my cover for four summers now and it is just starting to leak around the seams. The cover is weathered pretty bad from sun. The cover has kept my spyder dry and safe from the sun for four summers now and its time for a new cover for next season. You will never get the cover back in the bag that it comes with.
If I was going to use for trailering the spyder I would put a lot of extra straps around the the windscreen and hood area to keep the cover from flapping and also wrap an pold bed sheet arounfd the spyder to take up some extra cover space to avoid cover rash.

I hope this helps
