• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

trailer mode

there was a tread the other day about the trailer mode setting, first how do you put the bike in the mode, second, some of the people said they ride in that mode all the time. is there a benefit for doing this when riding the bike.

the mode is selected by using the mode button usually the last push before it gose back to Odometer. On the other hand I dont use it. As was under the impression for only pulling a trailer

John, I've been using trailer mode these last few days and it does make shifting smoother and bike does downshift faster when coming to a stop. I may keep it in trailer mode. Someone on the site said they ride with it all time in order to avoid clutch from slipping.

if ever

if i ever get my bike back i might give it a try, it's in the dealer for a week now waiting for a canister that melted

John, I ask the dealer if they're also changing the y-pipe gaskets. If the canister melted chances are one or both of the gaskets is shot. Mine were changed when the recall was done.

:agree: It doesn't take much of an exhaust leak in a confined space like that under the tupperware to really increase temps.

I've been doing this for some time now. It keeps me from upshifting too soon and will automatically downshift at an RPM which keeps the clutch engaged if I forget. I don't know about you, but 5000 RPM in first sounds like the engine is screaming. I frequently try to upshift to 2nd at about 22-24 MPH, when I should be shifting at 27-29 MPH. Trailer mode won't let me upshift if the resulting RPMs in the next gear would fall below 3500.

Tried it and I liked the higher up-shifting RPM but not the lower; when coasting to an impending stop where its not necessary to manually downshift, it does it at too high an RPM causing the lurching that I don't like. Went back to my normal mode.

BRP says to shift at 5 to 6 k and cruise between 5 and 6k

I read your post and you mentioned the surging. I rode my bike for over a year and hated the downshift surging and creeping at stop. It was then that the tech at my service center gave me a loaner while my bike was in for service. WOW! what a difference. I found out that this is NOT the way it was supposed to be. They replaced my clutch pac with a newer heavy-duty one and the bike is great. I had such a bad surge while downshifting that in curves, it would almost throw me off the road. So, all this said, your bike should NOT surge!!! This all came as a very big surprise to me. Surging means that your clutch is not disengaging as it is supposed to.

Larry, thanks for feedback. I know a couple of RT owners and will swap off with them to see how theirs compare. In fact, will prob see one of them tomorrow at breakfast and with take his down the road for a check. Will let you know.

Well I rode it all day today in trailer mode, and all I can say is WOW. Why isn't this the default setting? It wasn't really the up-shifting points that made the difference, it was the down-shifting that was such a big change. Normally the bike waits until you're going 15 mph or less to downshift through ALL the gears, which feels choppy. I had been downshifting it myself to avoid this, but with trailer mode on it downshifts smoothly at what seems 3500 rpms and at the correct speeds also, which feels much safer too.

This has me concerned... Something this easy and effective has to have a catch. I expect something like a wheel to fall off or the engine to seize up as a result of such an easy fix.

Doesn't trailer mode also adjust your brake bias and how the nanny sensitivity? I would think this would be a bad thing...

trailer Mode

Another thread that I can't participate in as I have a manual transmission. However I always ride in the 5K to 6K range as that is a sweet spot for lower belt vibes on my Spyder.

I've used the TM to come down steep twisty grades, even without the trailer. Helps reduce braking. They squeak enough as it is. The Rotax may roar but its a very hardy engine. It does consume more fuel in TM I believe.
