There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Trailer Hitch plug?

Dead Man Rydin

This is my first post so excuse my ignorance. Am I to understand that the hitch plug that is mounted on my 2011 RT-S will not convert or adapt to a 4-pin set-up on my non-Spyder trailer?
Now I'm really lost. The plug on the Spyder and the BRP Can Am adapter pig-tail plug that has the 4-pin plug on the opposite end seem to be identical in shape and function. What on earth is meant to plug into these or either one of these plugs? The only difference in the two is one has 9 pins and the pig-tail adapter has 6 pins in a 9-pin housing.
Now I know why the pig-tail plug has 6 pins in it but I can't seem to understand what devise will plug into either one of these. What am I missing? In my mind I should be able to take a plug from a Spyder trailer and splice into it with a 4 or 5-pin plug for my non-Spyder trailer. I've been searching the forum but I guess I can't understand what is being said. Pardon my ignorance..... Some one please enlighten this dummy from Texas.
No........ Being from Texas has nothing to do with it. Thanks for any help. :helpsmilie:

The Spyder trailer control module uses seven of the nine pins, for the following functions:

A - Ground
B - Running Lights
C - Right Brake
D - Left Brake
E - Backup Lights (not used)
F - Right Turn
G - Left Turn

A 4-wire system uses requires four functions:

White - Ground
Brown - Running Lights
Green - Right Turn/Brake
Yellow - Left Turn/Brake

The problem is that the turn signal outputs on a typical tow vehicle both come on when you brake, with an active turn signal blinking intermittently. Since the Spyder separates the brake function from the turn signals, you would need to connect both the brake and turn signal outputs on the Spyder to one wire on the trailer, to get both functions. It is unknown if this can be done without problems. Connecting the right brake and turn, or left brake and turn outputs together may or may not cause a short circuit or damage the module. It is also unknown if the brake lights would override the turn signals, making you lose the turn signal function when you brake. Only experimentation, or careful examination of the 2011 TR-622 trailer wiring (or diagram) can answer this question. If you take your Spyder and trailer to a good trailer shop, they may be able to use jumper wires to experiment and try to find the proper connections. In the end, most folks have just added turn signals to their trailer, then purchased the 2010 Trailer Tongue Harness P/N 710002029 to wire to the trailer directly or use to build an adapter.

It is hard to do these things blindly and long distance, but if you need to kick it around further, PM me and we can exchange emails or phone numbers. Not sure if I can help from afar, but I am willing.

Thanks

Thanks a lot. This explains a lot more than my brain was allowing to accept. I understand what you said. My main goal is to be able to use the factory plug on the Spyder and a plug that mates with it with wires leading to the trailer. If I have to, and I know I will....I can splice wires to the trailer and add extra lights to convert to what ever I have to do to make it work without damaging anything electrical on my Spyder.
I think I'm on the right track.

Trailer Wiring

Hello Scotty

I also just got a 2011 RT SE5.. After checking the tounge harness with a volt meter, it appears that the only wires used on my RT is ground (black) running (brown) Right brake (red) and left brake (orange),

I did hook up the right turn signal wires to new turn signal lights that I installed on the trailer. I wired the right turn signal (green) to the new right light and the left turn signal (blue) to the new left light. Nothing happens on the new lights, but all the other functions work correctly on the original trailer lights.

the running lights work correctly
the brake lights work correctly
and the turn signal lights work correctly. I have to assume that the signal light functions work on the can am right and left brake light wires??
