Trailer Hitch Install

Greetings All, just back from the dealer and getting my glove box latch replaced so it will now close.

Has anyone did a self install of the brp trailer hitch on an RT S? Just wondering if it can be done by myself or pay the $150. that the dealer wants to install it.

Also, while riding my :spyder2: today the fuel gage start to flutter, asked about that and I am on the mechanics list to have it replaced in about 2 months. He stated there was a sensor or something like that, that needed replacing.

The trailer hitch is an easy install just need a new cotter pin each time you reinstall it. As for the gauge problem my analoge gauge was very inaccurate so per instructions found in the forums i disconnected the gauges and it now shows up on the digital display which is way more accurate. Don't know if you can do that with the 2011.

If you can do the analog disconnect on the 2011 , I recommend it, because they replaced my gauges on the 2010 RTS and they still aren't anywhere near accurate,.. I hear much better things about the digital readout..

Thanks Doc, and Thanks for the recommendation on using Power Sport Wraps. Am talking with Pete from there on my design - I think it is going to look real good

I replaced my OEM fuel and temp with AEM digital volt and oil pressure and the fuel and temp now show up on the center display.I have a 2011 RT-S.

I have installed two hitches. Not a tough job, but lots of screws and body panels involved. The instructions are pretty good. Make sure you are careful where you run the harness. If left outside the bag at the inner fender, unsecured, it can contact the tire and short out. Either tuck it inside as much as you can, or secure it with some clamps or ties.

Thanks for all the input I think when I order the hitch I will tackle the job myself. Thanks for the hint on the wires Scotty, I will make sure I secure them.

Bobbobtar, was it a difficult swap out or was it a kind of plug and play type of a swap out ?

Really want to thank you all for the advise and knowledge that you have shared with me. If you ever wind up coming through the Pensacola, FL area, give me a shout, the first couple of rounds are on me.

Just one other thing if you plan to take it off often then a good film of grease on the inside of the hitch will make it much easier to take off .

My cable is hidden behind the inner fender. If you loosen/remove some of the fasteners holding the left saddlebag onto the bike you can route the cable unseen behind all of the tuperware.

I ordered the Canadian Hitch this morning and will try to install it myself (hopefully with a little help from a local friend). Question on the fuel gauge. I Was told yesterday, by my tech. at my 600 mi. service, that my 2011 analog is intentionally very conservative when showing the fuel level and fuel light. That BRP does not want you to run out of gas because you could suck air into the fuel pump and damage it. He claims 150 miles is an easy given even if the fuel light is on for a long time. This is assuming your bike is in good running condition. My question is: If I unhook the analog gauge (how do I do it?) will the digital automatically show up on the screen?

From what I've seen here; unhooking the analog gauges brings the digital ones online... BUT! I've not done this myself...
A little help here!

John,
Remove the 4 screws holding the dash, carefully pull that section out, and simply unplug the gauge. The computer will sense that the gauge is unhooked and revert to digital on the command center screen.

On the 2011 RTS you must disconnect both the gas and water temp gauges for the display to show on the digital display!
