Pardon me if this is of no value to anyone. I bought the trailer to transport my bike to Spyderfest and other cool places to ride my bike. The coast, mountains, etc. I'm not like some of you guys/gals that ride everywhere, maybe a wooze.
Anyway, everyone needs a winch, just in case the bike won't start or you are using the trailer for other jobs. HF had their 2500# winch on sale this week, so I got one. When I read that the duty cycle was 45sec on, 15 minutes off, I'm thinking what a POCrap. After reading the reviews most everyone thought that it was a good unit, so after going back and getting a winch mounting plate, which IMO you need, I installed it. It has a wireless remote which also is cool.
I just wired alligator clips to clip on the van's battery when needed. I tested it some and the motor didn't get warm or hot. Ignore my terrible welding job. I also needed a rain cover. I will get a plastic box to secure the wiring.
Yesterday I bought a used hot tub the was about 1/2" wider than my trailer. It didn't dawn on me to turn it on its side and I was alone so I might not have been able to do it anyway. Well, with some work I got it loaded, the winch worked great. Today, I got it back out, using the winch tied to a tree and a few tricks.
The end result is that the winch worked great and I ignored the duty cycle, the motor was verily warm. The usage was "as needed" but sometimes it ran more than 45 sec. I suppose that if you were pulling something 500' up a hill, you wouldn't do it in one pull. One thing, the steel cable is crap and already has broken strands (not enough to degrade it, just here and there) so wear leather gloves. FYI this is my first winch, so maybe everyone knows all of this.
