Trade in value?

I would never be without a spyder, I will own them as long as they keep making them. If I wanted to get a newer RS I would simply sell the 08 I have and put that cash down on one. I have been looking at the RS-S matte burnt orange spyder, but the wife and I are going to get an RT-S first and then I will consider trading my GS/RS on a new RS-S. Like I was saying before, I can't be without an RS, I just have way too much fun with it. RT will be great for our 2 up and distance riding, but I gotta have my RS for sport riding.

You'd be better off just getting your panels custom painted...cheaper than swapping around...

I have a 2008 Millennium Yellow...love it and won't get rid of it for some time...I keep adding mods...

I bought a 08 SM5 from a buddy in June with around 5K on the clock. Gave 9500 for it. After riding it for 6 months and several long trips 2 up, we decided to trade it for either a RT or Harley Triglide.

Several of the Harley dealers said they would not take it in on trade. I found a 2010 Silver RT audio SM5 and took my 08 SM5 down so they could have a look.

With very little "haggling", the gave me 9 grand for the 08 which I had put about 2500 miles on, giving it a total milage around 7500, and knocked 3 grand off the bottom line price on the RT deal...since the 2011 were due in in a few weeks.

All this took place the weekend before christmas. A few weeks late, I took the RT in for the 600 mile service and get the airbag replaced. My 08 GS had just been sold, for 10500, out the door.

In Texas, we only pay sales tax on the difference between the buying price and what we get for the trade...

curious about pricing......

First of all, hello to all I am new to this site and joined to better educate myself on the spyder, and was forwarded to this site by someone who had one for sale but had sold it by the time I came across his ad on cycletrader.com. So far I have been to dealers, looked all over the internet (sites like yakaz.com/oodle.com/ebay etc.) and actually caught people trying to sell them fraudulently. Among the dealers I have dealt with even learning what I have from this site over the past couple of days....I feel like they just want to much and while expecting you pay the asking price with no give and take it has been my experience lately that they will put it back on you by saying that if it means enough to you to have, you will have no problem paying.
I can appreciate that they have become popular and I even understand why, but would still like to pay at least reasonable money for one (ex. $13000+ for an 08 versus $16000+ for an 11) the prices just seem all over the place and thus making it hard to put an actual price on one or at least know if your in an acceptable realm price wise.

Please help guys!!!! I want to be a happy spyder owner as well!!

Any comments and/or knwoledge is appreciated, look forward to hearing back from everyone.:dontknow:

Sold mine for...

Sold my 08 SM5 two months ago to an individual for $8300. Came with F1 Evolution III slider windshield, Throttlemeister cruise control, leaking hindle exhaust, GloRyders and an American Flag Wrap. Had 24XXX miles on it and a top-notch transferable warranty including towing and rental car good till June 2014.
I've had a couple calls since then from people looking to purchase. It's still early enough in the riding season to get a good price for it IMO. Good luck with what ever you decide to do. Jerry

A good deal is determined by what the seller is trying to get for the machine, and what the buyer is willing to spend. If both are happy at the end of the transaction, then a good deal was made in each of their minds. If there is only a $3,000 difference between a used 08 and a new 11, I know my money would go towards the new model. At the same time, if I, for some crazy reason, decided to sell my Spyder I would want to get as much out of it as I could as well.

There are deals to be had out there, and Jerry's above is an example of that. Good luck in your search and keep in mind, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Anything over $7K is likely legitimate, but if someone is selling lower than that it could be pretty sketchy in my opinion.

:thumbup:SpyderWolf,

Thanks....and I agree....and at this point I would be estatic to find a syder for the $7000 to $9000 range lol.... My patience will pay off, but I am anxious to get out there on mine (when I get it!!).

I am wanting a RS-sm5.....

I understand completely. I paid full retail for mine when I bought it, then found one for my wife a little over a month later for $4K less than I paid for mine. :opps:

I would never trade anything to a dealer, they will always offer a very low price so they can mark it up when they sell it if you have the time selling it yourself will always get you the best price. I also don't believe that if you trade that will help you get a good deal on what ever you are buying, I think cash in hand speaks for itself you let them know you are a serious buyer and you have cash ready now they will deal.

Cash does not always speak loudest. The dealer also makes money on the "back end". They finance it to you for 1% -2% more than what the bank or finance company charges them..But,you are correct in getting more by selling it yourself. They cannot pay you retail if they are going to resell it. They pay you wholesale or close to it,if they can..

A week ago I was at my dealer looking a 08 sm5 with 1200mi. Asking $12,900. Went back 2 days later and it sold for $11,900. He told me he had a new 09 sm5 leftover w/phantom kit, foglights, and a 1" riser. Took it home for $14,600.

:ohyea:Just sold mine 18,000. 2009 SE5 40k on the clock !

I hope you sleep good at night. You got 18k for a 09 with 40k miles on it ??? WOW !!! You got that guy good. :yikes::yikes::yikes: Can't you get a brand new one for that price ???

Canadian poster--was in Canadian money most likely--don't know what the current exchange rate is though.

And regardless of the exchange rate, the spyders just more expensive in Canada. So I am sure it was a fair deal for all involved.

I pulled the Phantom off the table when I bought my Suzuki GSX1250 FA because I thought the trade value offered was way too low. But from what I'm reading here I may have been just a tad mistaken. Heck, Some dealers would not even take it.

My problem with the trade was that 14 is a genuine Phantom, not an RS with a skin kit. As such, it should be worth way more, but they don't see it that way. I don't think they get that part of it. But that is OK, I still have her for now and I'm glad.

I sleep well thank you much. Pushed it out front put a for sale sign on it and 45 miniutes sold it with two people waiting for the first guy to bale .

I paid 21k for it and put another 14k into it .

Just curious as to those that have traded in their 08 spyders for newer models. I am really curious as to what people have gotten recently (like within the last 4 months or so) on their trade in? How many miles did it have? SE5 or SM5? The dealer offered me $7500, I think it should be at least 8k, thoughts??:popcorn:

I'll give you $8500 cash for it!!

my dealer will let me sell it on his floor, as long as i buy a new bike and do paperwork. Win win situation!:2thumbs:

Can you explain further 14k into it ??? :dontknow::hun: What did you buy extra that would equal 14k ??? That must have been one tricked out RS !!!

The main problem is with sentimental attachment. They are always worth way more to us than any dealer, so they will try to get the best deal they can with trade in value. I am glad you kept 14 as well.

We sold our Spyder in 3 days on www.cycletrader.com (free 2-week ad). Pain-free transaction, solid buyer, met a new Can-Am fan through the process. Why not get the most for your money by selling yourself? If you trade in for another vehicle, they are going to get you one way or another (trade in value, price of new bike, financing). Here's the best strategy: (1) Sell your bike; (2) Negotiate price for new/gently used bike; (3) Always pay cash for toys. You are in the driver's seat. Good luck!
