Once again, I am looking at adding to my 2013 STL. This time, it's luggage. I already have the hard Givi saddle bags that came with the Limited package. When I bought the Spyder last year, my wife and I bought matching helmets and when riding. A lot. Now we are considering longer trips and would like more storage. If $$$ weren't an issue, we would trade it in for an RT, but that's not gonna happen.

So, while I am still looking for the best seat option for me (see my other posts about seats, injuries, and pain), I still need a backrest for my wife. Putting it all together, a backrest and top box combo might be a good idea. I see that some manufacturers offer a backrest that attaches to the front of a top box. That option is appealing. The problem is that I don't want to have to pay a lot of money for the OEM Sport Rack that does nothing but function as a bracket. I see where somebody (don't remember who) used to offer a bracket that mounted where the sport rack would go, and you could put a top box on that. I can't find that bracket available. Can anyone help out?

I see there are many options for top boxes, but it would be nice to use Givi because they would match my saddle bags. However, I am open to other options. Cost is a consideration; I'm trying to stretch my fun money out as far as possible.

Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Forget to add this: Get the silver oem rack on ebay for less than 150 and repaint it. You cannot really see it after the top box goes on.

Thanks for the link. It may be just what I was looking for. I don't know why the silver sport rack is so cheap, but I'm willing to go that route. With the current price of a Givi E470, I could bring the project in at about $400. That's for a silver rack, Givi E470, and a Givi backrest.

A couple of questions for you:

1. Did you have to remove the antenna? If so, where did you mount it?
2. Did you add a backrest? If so, is the positioning of it right for your passenger?

Although I used the E470, I think there are others that used bigger givi top cases, 52 liter ones. Give them a look before you commit; you still use the factory rack either way. I went with the E470 because it came with a pearl white top shell + it had a shape that I thought worked with the bike lines.

Post a pic on your setup when done.

I use a Givi Maxia 52 litre top case. It sure does hold a lot but you need to ensure its base plate is attached to something that is really secured to the rear of the Spyder..

My Really Big Butt on RS

This is the largest Givi top box, I can get two full face helmets in it plus some room for other stuff. To mount I used the Can-Am Sport Rack and with a home-made custom sized aluminum plate I bolted the Givi quick-release mount to the Sport Rack piece that is removable. Be sure to use nylock nuts and lots of thread-lock!

I added the Ad-More lighting kit to it and it really improved the visibility from behind. http://www.admorelighting.com/index.php?route=common/home

I also added a cover to the Top Box out of some aluminum diamond-plate I had. Used 1" spacers and rubber washers to keep the water out. Without the top cover the sun hitting the Top Box would really get the inside of the box hot! With the top cover it pretty well stays at ambient temperature, plus I can carry small, lightweight items on top, such as smelly gas cans and such.

The antenna is my add-on for my Ham Radio. No neighbor-annoying boom-box on the RS, I use the Sena to listen to my entertainment in my helmet.

Answer: Yes, I replaced it with a short aftermarket one. The oem one screws out of the base and the new one screws in. I will fabricate a better solution one day, but this works in town.

Answer: No backrest added as it adds a 2" thickness. The armor in the jacket is the backrest.

I run a Givi B47 Blade box with the Givi backrest pad mounted to an extra sport rack plate. They are pretty inexpensive. Its nice to be able to carry some extra stuff for overnighters, but also to be able to remove it completely when not needed.

Could you post a couple pictures of your Spyder with the Givi B47? It would be helpful to get some perspective and see how it looks.
