Top Box Chrome Luggage Rack

New Spyder Ryder looking for input on the racks I have seen for the top box. Is this OEM or third party? What are the best brands if third party? If third party is this advisable to add to increase capacity? What would the max capacity? Would this in any way damage the top box cover? Many thanks for any insight.

I had a rack on my '11 and recently bought a '15 Limited. I miss the rack and will probably be shopping for one, soon.
I didn't carry luggage on it, but, it was nice to have a stretchy net that I could put a coat on it or something else light if I needed it.
I carry a roll bag on the back seat when we go on trips.

I have yet to install the Show Chrome luggage rack I have. Just haven't had time. But, I already purchased a Nelson Rigg travel cover, because it's obvious the BRP one won't fit once the rack is on. The rack looks like it's good quality, I bought Show Chrome before for my Suzuki.

FYI, if anyone already installed a Custom Dynamics third brake light, make sure you purchase the chrome risers for the Show Chrome rack. If not, the rack will hit the light.

First, you may want to add your model and year of bike to your signature line or profile. It helps a lot in getting answers to question such as this.

With that said, I posted a thread on 7/27/15 entitled "Full Cover Fitment" that gives some pictures and stats about a recent luggage rack that I installed as well as a full cover that will still fit over the rack. I don't believe that BRP offers a rack of any kind so they will all be after market. My stats are as follows:

2015 RT-S with stock windshield
Stock single antenna
Show Chrome 41-155 Tour trunk rack (purchased from Value Accessories, a sponsor on this forum - find them on the Home page of this site)
5/8" riser kit for the rack (highly recommend that you use these for the best installation - Value Accessories again)
Nelson Rigg Full Cover CAS-370
UltraGard (Hopnel) Touring Luggage Rack Bag 4-603 (also available from Value Accessories)

There are many different racks available for these machines so it boils down to personal preference together if you have (or plan to add) any additional lighting to the trunk area. The combination I had selected was to yield the most storage area with the least impact profile and still be able to use a cover. I do not have any additional brake lights at this time but may add the strip LED's that go around the trunk lid "crack" between the lid and case (I believe they refer to these as the "3rd and 4th brake lights"). Keep in mind however that there is still a 10 lb. limit on the rack area so we are talking lightweight clothing and such only in this rack bag.

I installed the Show Chrome rack too

Check around, the rack is down to about $111.00 now. Be very careful and follow directions closely when mounting the rack. It's not hard but just the anticipation of drilling holes in my trunk lid was a bit unsettling. Use appropriate sized fender washers (not supplied with the rack) under the nuts on the inside of the trunk cover when you tighten it all together to add support. The washers will help to avoid future cracking of the trunk lid. I also purchased the extra star washers to go on the outside surface of the lid to accomplish the same thing. However, I quickly tossed them to the side and went with the larger fender washers under the lid. It ends up looking a lot cleaner w/o the washers on the outside. Yep, the BRP half cover and my Tourmaster full cover no longer fit after I installed the rack. I took both covers down to an upholstery shop and had them extended with like material to accommodate the new rack and I'm back in business. The rack is not going to carry much in the way of weight, but it can hold a light weight bag of clothing just enough to make the wife a little happier on a 2dayer.

The Show Chrome BP41-155 rack from Value Accessories did come with a full washer set but they are specialized washers, not fender washers. There are rubber washers that go next to the plastic on both the inside and outside of the lid. Next to the rubber there are "tapered" washers that also go on both inside and outside surfaces. These tapered washers can be rotated so that between the one on the inside and the one on the outside they create a solid support all the way through even though the screw holding the rack on is going through at an angle. The taper part is about 3/4" in diameter and the bolts that go through to screw into the rack go through 5/16" through holes.

You are correct the rack does come with washers but they are not the large outside diameter of the fender washers. These really help to spread the load out. Being a little OCD I put the Star washers on the the outside and the fender washers on the inside. I could not get the star washers to mount under the tapered washers on the lower legs so I went with the just the fender washers.
I really like this rack. I like it's design and the way it mounts. It will not take the regular cover any more. I will have to look up 2dog's post to see his solution to this dilemma
You do have to remember that you must subtract the weight of anything you put up there from the total weight the trunk will support.

Pegasus1300 - Check my thread from 7/17/15 entitled Full Cover Fitment. I have a picture of the Nelson Rigg CA-370 full cover fitting on the RT with the Show Chrome trunk rack installed. It fit with no problem.

Yesterday I also ordered the Formosa half cover but don't have it to try out yet to see if it fits with the rack installed.

Ultra Guard coversti works after therack is on
Good cover also

Just installed Show Chrome Rack

I just finished the installation of the Show Chrome trunk rack. It only took about an hour. I spent more time making sure the hole outlines were okay before I started drilling. Then I drilled the first hole (I used a step drill until I reached the recommended 5/16" mark), checked the screw alignment, and so on for all four holes. The supplied rubber washers and tapered "stands" appear very adequate. DO NOT over-tighten the screws. The instructions say that you will crack the paint/plastic.
Some folks have reported the the gas shocks that hold the lid up are not strong enough after installing the rack. I have no issue on my RT. The lid stays open without any problems. These shocks can wear out over time, so maybe I will experience the problem down the road. We'll see.
Overall, I am very pleased with the install and overall look it gives to the ultimate "touring" Spyder. We set out for SpyderQuest in a couple of days. This was the main reason for installing the rack. Just needed space for an extra travel bag. So far, I would give this product four (4) stars. If all goes well on the trip I will raise another star.

Is this for an RT? Keep in mind the load limit for the trunk is 20#. It's easy to reach that with just stuff inside the trunk. The rack does not increase the load capacity.
