Toll Roads on the way to Spyderfest

I noticed that there are several toll roads that might be encountered on the way to Spyderfest. We don't have any out here. Not planning on taking them but if I happen to get on one, is there anything I need to know? Do they have toll booths (probably not?) or is a payment request mailed to you or what? Total toll road noob. Does being from out of state/country make any difference?

The last toll road I was on they had booths next to an automated coin counter machine. You just tossed the money in the machine

Have not picked an absolute route. A lot has to do with weather and time. When we leave Spyderfest, we plan to drop down and go back through Oklahoma, part of Texas and New Mexico before heading north again. There look to be several in Oklahoma.

The method of collecting tolls varies from State to State. In New Jersey, you occasionally pass through a toll station, toss in the change and roll on. One toll road in Georgia has only one toll station and that's where you pay, no matter what direction you go. In Kansas, you get a toll ticket when you enter the turnpike and then pay to a toll-taker when you get off. My experience last fall In New York state is the same. One difference I found, though, is that Kansas accepts credit cards for tolls, but New York only accepts cash!

If your taking 44 into Oklahoma to the Oklahoma turnpike then they have toll booths that you pull off to pay or pay at your exit.

:agree: Been on the Oklahoma turnpike and kept cash in my tank bag for the tolls. The people in the toll booths explained the process and made change. It was easy...

In Texas, depending what road you're on...

Or toll booths (Houston Beltway 8 and ?),

And ones with big signs before you get on that say 'No Cash' (Houston 99 and ?) You have to have a EZ Tag or something else like it to ride on those.

All the above are clearly marked before you get on the road. Put in "and ?" because there may be other Texas toll roads I'm not aware of yet.

Nope, that would be I-76 back to the Northwest (or Southeast). I-70 West through Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, etc., is toll-free.

But you might not enjoy driving it... TRUX! :banghead:

Yazz, there are some new "managed" lanes being built in the DFW area - a toll road built into the existing freeway. On the most recent ones, you will not see a single sign that says toll or toll road. There will be only ONE sign that indicates the cost to use the "toll road". It's a digital sign and the tolls can vary by the minute. The sign shows the normal vehicle cost and an HOV cost, but you have to pre-register for the HOV rate. If you miss the sign with the cost, and aren't familiar with the various tolling tags that will work, then an unsuspecting driver could get quite the surprise in the mail. I put a toll tag on my F3 the other day and used the managed lanes for the first time. It cost me 50 cents to go the approximate half mile I was on the "toll road". What a bargain! Not!!

Robin and I are still waiting to receive tickets in the mail from October when GPS got us on one of those no cash toll roads. :sour: It may have been clearly marked but by the time we saw the markings it was too late to change lanes.

I keep money in my glove box for tolls and pay for Joe and I at the same time so he doesn't have to mess with getting money out on his motorcycle.

Toll Booth Farm

You need to experience the Florida turnpike heading to Disney world in Orlando, FL. With all those flippin toll booths, you swear you'll never go back again! It is like a damn toll farm down yonder.

I wish they would do away with tolls and just add a couple of cents to a case of beer or bottle of wine... Because the damn tolls drive people to drink anyway!

Around Denver the toll roads supposedly take a pic of your license plate and send you a bill. That's what my friend who lives there said. I say supposedly because I was on them on my Goldwing in 2013 and never received a bill. Maybe it was because I was on a motorcycle, or maybe because I was out of state. I have no idea.

Thank you everyone for your input. Although not intending to take any toll roads, like Ann said, sometimes things are inevitable so I will keep some change handy for them.
I'm thinking that the ones that send you request for payment may not, especially for an out of country plate.

Yep, new Tomball Parkway opens Sunday, will be eztag only. Don't get on one without an eztag. You WILL get the bill in the mail, but the admin fee for mailing it to you is MUCH more than the toll.

That is good advice. Unfortunately I don't have a Garmin 660 or similar. Have an older Nuvi 255 and I'm not sure if it has that feature. We only use it when going through cities and I avoid them when ever possible. Still big on paper maps and my wife is really good at reading maps as we ryde.

That is good advice. Unfortunately I don't have a Garmin 660 or similar. Have an older Nuvi 255 and I'm not sure if it has that feature. We only use it when going through cities and I avoid them when ever possible. Still big on paper maps and my wife is really good at reading maps as we ryde.

The Garmin website says that the Nuvi 255 has Navigation features that include: "Route avoidance (avoid highways, tolls etc.)"

The surprise in the mail would not be fun...but I live in a State that passed a law that says plate info will not be shared with any other states...:yes: mainly because our neighboring State kept harassing our residents through thier camera speed enforcement sysyem on thier roads around Sioux City...tickets amounts were astronomical...

No that I would condone being irresponsible, but if they can't clearly mark thier toll roads and fees and make it easy to pay...well... I wouldn't have to worry unless I needed to go back to that state with the same vehicle...

I have seen this happen in other areas. Once the state starts refusing to honor the requests for information, other states refuse to release until fines are paid. IE if SD refuses to honor requests for information on drivers to enforce out of state tickets, TX pulls over SD drivers and refuses to let them resume travel until fines are paid as bond on the spot. IE pay up on the side of the road or go to local jail until you can post bond until your court date. When states refuse to honor each others driver information requests, it gets ugly for the drivers quickly. Also interstate driver infraction enforcement is federal law. I suspect SD will need to rescind its non-disclosure law soon.

I ride up I-45 from Houston and just put up with the traffic to get on I-75 out of Dallas. Would rather suck it up and slog it out on the highways vs. going the "managed" lanes. Did that once won't do it again. :gaah:

We honestly did that once. We were going by the GPS through Dallas and it took us on roads that took us way out of the way. Still waiting for the bill to be mailed. That was last year..
