To Brake or Not To Brake....

I knew you were out there Arntu :roflblack: I am not referring to gouging or calling the price gouging--just talking about how prices are determined. I think $1500 is a lot for an add on handbrake and I would not buy it--I just vote with my pocketbook.

It is obvious that many have not agreed with me and purchased the aftermarket brake and were very happy with it at that price. That being the case--I would guess that would be a ballpark price if BRP offered it. It might even be a bit more since it would be genuine BRP. Using aftermarket floorboards compared to the new BRP floorboards, as an example, the new floorboards are pricey. What is their actual cost?--we will never know and can only speculate because we are not privey to the cost accounting information.

It all makes for interesting discussion though.

My first impression was they were neat looking and cool. But scared off by the premium over the MSRP, I did not have a first year model or any other one. Rented one in Hawaii--and did not like it. Glad I did not take the plunge on that one.

Here is another interesting aspect. Below is a list of the 2012 motorcycles offered with integrated ABS braking. As far as I can tell, everyone of them come with a needless, expensive?, handlebar mounted brake lever. The ABS feature is an option but the brake lever is not.

Oh, all except two models that is... Go figure!

Part of the cost of that aftermarket hand brake has to be liability insurance, the other part being it is probably a low volume item meaning you have to make up all your production costs and a profit spread out over a relatively few units.

BRP already has the liablity issue paid for, no additional expense, and putting this on every Spyder with parts they already have would have to bring the cost way down.

I just don't see the downside to this one. But obviously, I'm missing something here.

My wife rides the :spyder2: and didn't ride 2 wheels before we bot it, so she is fine without it since she has never developed the habit of using a front brake. I ride a wing and am usually on my highway pegs, so I use the front brake alot, if I went to the :spyder2: I would probably like the front brake.

Your not missing anything Ron. It's a no brainer. They should have a hand brake and yes I agree they would be making a profit off a charge of $150.00, probably a good sized one.

These people that don't think they could use one have obviously never pushed their spyder out of the garage or a trailer and needed to stop it. :yikes:

Sure do! They still toss out anchors to stop but they are on cables attached to a computer these days! :shocked:

I don't see the point to have it as standard equipment. If it was offered as an option for those who want it fine. For me it would be a useless piece of scrap metal. If you took it off there would be ugly remnants left and you would have keep the parts for resale. Extra cost for nothing.

After 8,500 miles I am used to and like the single brake peddle. I have to think a second or two when I start off on my Motor Trike....front brake, foot shift, etc. No big problem, just a change in my thought process.

Of course you need a hand brake on two wheels. Can you imagine when you had to use both feet to balance or back up. What nightmare that would be. But on three wheel useless.

Personally, I would like to see it at least as an option. I can remember being on the Interstate with my feet on the highway pegs and having a cage cross 3 lanes and slam on the brakes in front of me, for no apparent reason. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

I've got to admit that I hadn't thought of this... A VERY good point! :thumbup:

But if the bike had the lever, I'd use it!

I Rode motorcycles for over 30yrs before going on to the Spyder
First time on a test ride a Lorry pulled out and I had to apply the brakes - My automatic reaction was to go for a front leaver and the foot brake - The Spyder stopped ok

That's been the only time I went for the non-existence Brake Leaver

Once my brain had adjusted to the fact there was no front brake the situation has never arised again

Having said that I would still have liked the option of a front brake leaver as I often move my Spyder around for cleaning etc
and its easier to grab a lever to stop the Spyder breaking away - My hands are on the handlebars anyway to push the Spyder and it makes sense to be able to stop it with ease using a front brake leaver rather than having to use the foot brake as I may well be
on the LHS - It would be easier to reach the front brake leaver than lean across to put the foot brake on

I have therefore voted Yes - It would then be my option to use or not use - Our choice not BRP's
Without the Front brake leaver fitted there is no option
