Thoughts on my new Spyder

I thought I had a starter going bad on my Spyder but it turned out to be the magneto which would have left me stranded in Springfield for a while and since I wanted to get home I did what most sane people would do I traded it for a 2013. I had never seen a 2013 in person before Spyderfest and buying one wasn't anywhere on my radar screen but with 59,100 miles on my 2010 it seemed like a good idea. Len had the guys swap out my Two Brothers Exhaust, the vented windshield that I had just bought, my bump skid and my trailer hitch and wiring on the new machine before we left on Sunday. He also installed the third brake light for me.

I really like the "blacked out" look on the handlebars and the sides and the black wheels. The front fenders look cool and I like the position lights on the front of them. I will be changing the reflectors over to lights as soon as I can.

The handling is definitely different than the 2010 but I don't know that it is better. I had 2011 shocks BajaRon's Anti Sway Bar on my 2010 and it handled great. We rode through some really strong cross winds on the way to Spyderfest and the Spyder stayed in its lane I wish I could say the same for the new one but I can't. In steady cross winds it is okay but add a passing semi and it gets really wiggly. I will be lobbying Baja Ron for a sway bar for the 13s.

Will BRP ever figure out that you can't see the turn signal indicator lights in bright sunlight? The orange on the instrument panel is nice but doesn't do anything to cut down on glare. The front trunk liner looks better than the old one.

My old Spyder went into Limp Mode the 2nd day that I had it but it went away and I never went into it again. The new one has been in Limp Mode 3 times already. The first time was when I hit a bump on the freeway it said VSS fault and I pulled over and turned it off and it went away. Today it happened again and I have a C0040 and C006C code and my brake lights are stuck on. Correction: My brake lights won't go on. :gaah:The limp mode went away again when I restarted it but came back on just before I got home.

HiYa Ann !!

Sorry bout some of your issues with 2013, but congrats on your new ride !!!

59,000 miles, WOW !!!

Tommy J.

Congrats..!!

on the new ryde. Sorry how it came about but I'm sure the glitches can be worked out and the world will be right again..good luck...!!

C0040 = Brake pedal switch failure - mechanical failure or wrong mounting of BLS, BLS circuit open, or defective brake light bulbs

C006C = VSS CAN message plausibility error - communication intermittent/erratic and/or checksum error

Sounds like a loose connector, water in a connector, or a bad brake light switch to me.

Bummer on the Short Bus...I bet a dealer gets it fixed...but not something you want with a new machine

Since my 2010 blew it's transmission linkage on the way to SpyderFest, and has cost me about $2K to get it, and us, back home, I've been thinking about getting a 2013. Appreciate your insights. My 2010 is set up perfectly, with the anti-sway bar, Elka shocks, Corbin seat, accessory stop/running light. I think I'll just hold onto my bike, and hope the repair fixes the problem and I don't have any more major issues.

59k on 2010 wow that's a lot of miles. Let me figure this out with my solar calculator. It will take me 50 years to catch up with you. I wonder if my 2012 Spyder will last that long. HMMMM.:roflblack: I worried also if the vaccum hose still good by then.:roflblack:

Its not hard you just have to get out there and ride!

:congrats: on your new 2013. Do you have a picture or two for us--once you get unpacked and settled in.

:congrats: on 59,000 miles on the 2010. I am pushing 30,000 miles now but it may take me two summers of riding to catch up to where you were. Wondering how many high mileage 2010 RT's there are out there now? I am currently happy with mine. Paid for, so far, no mechanical problems other than regular maintainence stuff.

Very sorry to hear that you are having issues from the starting gate. There is nothing worse than being on a long journey and having the computer kicking in with nasty messages.

Glad to hear you made it home all right. I am sure you will get the problem solved soon. Please keep us posted on the progress.

What color did you get? Glad you made it home ok. I pulled in late Monday night after riding in from Casper, Wy.

Good Choice

SpyderAnne01.....

When I heard the rumor that you got a Yellow 2013 I thought for a second that perhaps you were influenced by seeing mine. But then I realized that you must have made the decision independently. You will learn to love it.

So far -- knock on wood -- mine has performed flawlessly. It is a bit "squirrel-y" in the wind and it took some re-adjustment on my part after riding my GS for almost five years. I also had a belt tensioner on my 2008 GS and I loved it. With the floorboards on the RT-S, I strongly feel the belt vibrate so I may eventually get another tensioner. I still haven't been able to get my Iphone -- as a phone -- to work clearly though it does play my mp3 collection fine. When I call or am called, neither party can hear each other because of the noise. These are minor chidings; mine pulled my trailer for over 3000 miles with no problems.

Did I mention that I love the 2013.

Congratulations on yours.

Thanks Ken. Your Spyder did have an influence on me as it was the first 2013 RT that I saw in person. Of course the fact that my 2010 broke down had an even bigger influence. :roflblack: I didn't think I would like the Yellow but it is growing on me and I really like the blacked out pieces and the fact that the yellow is metallic. I got the SM so I don't have the floorboards and I find that there isn't much vibration.
