• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

this was the reason BRP did not want us to over-fill the gas tank

during my recent trip, i had 150 miles to a known fuel stop and stopped to top off the gas tank. at that point i had only rydden 40 miles and lost only one bar on fuel gauge. i would usually open my gas very slowly to let the pressure out slowly but when i was about open my gas cap this time, someone on a harley next pump asked me a question about spyder and i got distracted and opened my gas cap rapidly and gas just spewed out of gas tank like a geyser. my arm got soak with gas and gas just everywhere.

i have never topped off before because my dealer made big deal about it when i bought the spyder but, during this trip because of fear of running out of fuel on a remote area, i topped off. will not be doing that again.
now to look for decent looking auxiliary tank...

Huh? I always top this bike off and I always open the tank without worrying about the speed at which I take off the cap...

i get alot of pressure built up in my gas tank.
when i fuel in hot weather and my gas tank is empty, i can hear the sound of metal buckling due to pressure being let out of tank.

my dealer even heat wrapped the exaust pipes on both side and added heat shield to gas tank to prevent this but it still happens.

i am on my 3rd evap canister and i never over-filled but i think all that pressure is pushing gas into canister.

Hi Akka104,

Just curious,

Can you tell me why you have had to change your evap canister. Is this somthing that has to be change often and how do you know it needs to be changed :dontknow:. I know I have one on my car with 200K on it and its never been changed.
 
It strikes me as somewhat funny.... aka1004..... you hear "metal buckling" ??? Are you sure you are on a Spyder or is this a submarine passing 5000 ft :clap::clap:

But I will keep this in mind, never thought of it, but have always topped off, and then usually start driving. Never open up the tank again till I'm due to refill.....

:agree: Never had a problem . May-be you have a exhaust leek under the tupperware causing a heat build-up ?:dontknow:

I just looked at the book and I'm wondering if you have a bad purge valve. :dontknow: The tank is under pressure (4psi) but there is a test procedure for the purge valve. Has your tech check that?
 
Modern vehicles meeting emissions requirements are no longer directly vented. Venting is through the purge system and evap canister. If you open your car or truck gas tank, you will find the same type of pressure build-up. The engine heat directly below the Spyder gas tank (or many motorcycles) does not help the pressure situation. I've has other warm bikes spit back when opened soon after filling. Look at how your gas gauge changes between hot and cold conditions to see how much volume change there is. The Spyder has a small tank, and a nearby evap canister. Not much room for expansion or error. I'm not surprised that it spit back at you after a short ride following the initial fill. This situation also seems to be responsible for the gas fumes many of us smell regularly. Live and learn, I guess. Inherent in the breed.

Guess from years of working as a gas pump jockey back in the old days - I remember the first time I took off a gas cap and heard the sound of air escaping from the cap. The old timer at the station who was checking under the hood (yea it was a long time ago) told me to always take a gas cap off slowly. Force of habit I just turn slow and listen for air to escape. - by the way I have tasted a lot of gas by turning the cap quickly before I learned. LOL

i had bad gas fume problem and brp and dealer were trying different things to resolve that and canister was changed in the process. it was not my request to replace it.

when it's warm and my tank is empty, it sounds like a shaken bottle of soda is being opened and metal buckling as tank is retracting to original shape i guess.

usually, i do wait till i am pretty low to fuel and this was first time i opened my gas cap to fuel when fuel level is that high.

yes. purge valve was checked and replaced everytime they replace the canister.
 
Hmmm...Maybe I'm pressing my luck. I always top off, to the very top (if Lamont isn't riding off without me anyway). I've never had any problems.

Occasioinal gas fumes but not bad. I have gotten some of that with most every motorcycle I've owned.

I have both my exhaust pipes wrapped from the head back almost to where they join. I think that helps the heat as I don't feel near as much on my leg as I used to.
