Been lurking for a while before joining. Local dealer has a 2012 rt manual with 8000 miles for 14000. Thinking about seeing what they would give me in trade for my 2005 royal star venture. I have always done my own work on my bikes so I don't think used would be too bad. I like the the the new motor but I don't want to pay that much for one right now. Is this a good bike to start out on and is there anything I should look for on this model. I am assuming someone traded it it on a new one. Thanks

There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Before I would by a second hand from a dealer, I would ensure some type of warranty was worked into the deal. Also, consider, the dealer may have a set point he plans to sell at. This is fine, but it may be possible to purchase a nicer machine for less money form an individual.
Saying that, there seems to be some good deals posted in the classifieds here. Might be worth a look.
If you use Facebook, there is a group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1620561338199898/ that has a bunch of what appear to be quality machines for sale at reasonable prices. No dealers are allowed to post so these are individuals with a bike for sale.
Whether or not you do your own work, I would consider what warranty you will get and at what cost. We bought new, and the wife insisted on additional warranty, no plans to use it except for the major stuff. Our local dealer is crap and is not into doing warranty work.
Sorry, forgot something, yes, with a trade involved, a dealer may be your better option unless you sell the Yamaha outright.

The 2012 is a good machine and if they give you a good trade in I would go for it.
sm5 is the manual transmission.

Glad you jumped in. Being you do your own work get a shop manual online and look through it and get an idea of what it is. 2012 was a solid year and you should have no problem. Check with the dealer that all work is up to date by vin#. Shop around for price range and good luck...:thumbup:

The best way to save here might be to sell your old motorcycle yourself, depending on where you are and how that will be for you. You can at least give it a shot, and walk into the dealer with cash, or find a better deal elsewhere. The faster engine on the 2014-2016 does made a substantial difference, so I'd strongly consider what the differences will be in cost. I also agree that a warranty is essential, which is another reason to look for a newer model if you can find one.

Good advice to check out the service record of the particular machine you are looking at. Dealer can input the VIN into the computer and bring up its history.
With trade in's the deal can go either way. I would recommend trying to sell on your own first.

I personally have no experience with the 2012 RT. I have a friend who is getting the 2013 heat mod scoops put on his 12 by the dealer at no charge. If you sell your motorcycle yourself rahter than trading it in maybe you can get the dealer to do the heat mods for you as part of the price. Just a thought.

I was in your same boat and also a former Yamaha V4 rider.In June I bought a low mileage (8500) 2012 RTL. Like you I really like the the new 1330/6 but I just couldn't swing that much money.
I read Spyder Do's and Do Nots about how to ride a 998 and I have been very happy with it. You have a service coming up on that bike at 10,400 miles. See if the dealer will give you that service as part of the deal. Also see if he will throw in a Zurich extended warranty. If you are out of factory warranty you can't buy the BEST so if you want one Zurich may be the only way to go.
I think you will like the Spyder. The 998 is like our VR/RSTD/RSV it likes to rev and runs better at the upper rpm ranges. Good luck with your purchase.

I got off and told my husband I'd be ok with buying that because I decided I wanted to ride. So to make a long story short, I ask him when
are we going on our next ride all the time. The only problem we have had in 6 months of riding is a sensor that went bad but was under warranty. BRP paid
for the towing and we had nothing out of pocket except for a day without the bike. We're happy with it.

2012 RT is a great bike. I put over 43000 miles on mine before trade in (no problems at all). One thing I have noted is that once people try the SE transmission they seldom look back. My 2010 was an SM5 but since trying the SE I love it and would never go back.. I found the only reason I was getting the SM was to cling to my old biker days, and after getting caught in a few major traffic jams the semi automatic really became appealing
