Things to look for & ask about on a 2014 RT Limited?

Hi,

My previous Spyders were a 2008 GS SM5 and then a 2010 RT SE5 that I had until 2013. Both were great rides and I'm thinking hard about getting back onto a Spyder as I'm over 70yo now and my 2-wheel V-Strom isn't doing what I need.

From what I've read here, the 1330 engine and the tranny are solid, but having no experience with either, what do you suggest I look for and ask the owner about?

There's a one-owner 2014 RT Limited near me with about 25,500km (~15,000 mi) that has new front tires and the extended warranty for another year. The asking price is C$21,500 (US$16,000). Any thoughts and advice are appreciated.

Thanks,
Rod

There's a one-owner 2014 RT-L near me with about 25,500km (~15,000 mi) that has new front tires and the extended warranty for another year. The asking price is C$21,500 (US$16,000). Any thoughts and advice are appreciated.

If you can get a Dealer to enter the VIN into His computer system all the work that has been done at a DEALER on that Spyder will be shown and He can give you a print-out...... If the owner has done all the maintenance ( like I have done ) not much if any info will appear..... see what type of records the owner has .... Personally a 14 should be sold for less money, however that is a low mileage bike .... mine has over 75,000 mi. and runs great ,,,,, good luck ... Mike

To my way of thinking, that is waaay over-priced. My ‘14 has 67,000 kms on it, and I’d be hard pressed to get $16,000 Cdn for it (although I certainly don’t know the current market). Mine is running great, just eating my ready cash in farkles.
I’d try very hard to talk him down.

I also have a 2014 but a RTS...Many 2014 had DESS issues, some got fixed with a module, some with a antenna, and some just got turned off the permentaly to end the problem...Also many had air ride compressor problems...Variety of fixes for air ride problems...

I really like our 2014 RTS...Hoping it lasts as long as I can ride...I'm 80 next month...

This ride should give you many smiles & miles of riding pleasure:):):)

Hi Mike!
I sent the owner an email this morning asking about service records, and that's a good idea to have a dealer run the VIN.

Thanks!

Thanks Bruce. I've friend in BC (who lived Chillwack until last year) who's thinking about a Spyder and from what he's shared with me, prices are much lower out there. I've been looking in Ontario and Quebec and they're all higher for a low mileage ride. To avoid the hassle of the mandatory out-of-province inspection I'm hoping to find on locally.

Great to hear Larry that you're still riding! That's my plan in getting another Spyder -- the two-wheeler just isn't safe enough for me anymore on the local roads.

I'll ask about the DESS and the compressor. Seems to me it was a problem with my 2010 too...

As far as the DESS module goes, yes it was a major issue. However it only effected about 35% of the 14 RT models. If you can get the FRUNK off, replacing it ( about $150..) is easy peasey. a couple of bolts and two elec. connections and your done.... after mine was replaced ( under warranty ) I re-located it to a spot under the right headlite, the OEM wiring will go that far, ..... good luck...
