• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

There's a Hole in My Kevlar Belt !

I just returned from a short shake-down trip from Kansas City to Lake of the Ozarks. First run with my new Alumna Trailer. I post more on another thread.

I was parked at the Ozark H.D. dealership in Lebanon, MO and someone looking over my Spyder saw a rock that appeared to be sitting on top of my belt and went to brush it off and it wouldn't budge. Upon further inspection he noticed that it was wedged into the Kevlar Belt. I wasn't at my Spyder at the time, so he went inside the dealership and had me paged over the intercom.... ( " Guy with the Spyder... come out and see") That was actually pretty nice of the guy to notice and get my attention.

Well it turns out that this rock ( granite pebble ) must have flew up into the underside of the rear sprocket, got wedge between the belt and sprocket and eventually was forced through the Kevlar Belt and now mostly on the outside of the belt. With a H.D. mechanic's help, we had to force a screwdriver to pry out the rock. There is a small hole not really visibly completely through the belt, exactly in the middle of the belt. The kevlar threads have sinced ( although broken) closed the hole.

Question (1): How important and how quick should I replace this belt. The H.D. guy says it looks bad, but because of the location and size, the belt will last as long as a new. But I'm planning a trip to Yellowstone. I guess my answer is replace the belt ????

Question (2): Lamonster ???? help..... I have the Bushtec Hitch on the bike, does anybody know if to remove the rear wheel you need to remove this hitch. I hate for a dealership to do that.... since the wirirng is hard wired and I worry that they might not be as gentle as I want with the hitch

Oddly enough the sprocket was not damaged as we could see, that's some pretty tough aluminum !!!!!

I've changed out a belt on another members ride before. You don't have to remove the wheel to change the belt. Just loosen the wheel so you can pull the belt off the sprocket and then remove the left side lower fender bolts and the left side frame bolts and slide the belt out.

This same guy got another rock about a month later in his new belt so if it was me I would buy a new belt and keep it as a spare and run that till you need to change it. Chances are that will be thousands of miles down the road.
