• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

The search is almost over....

Greetings again.
Since there are no 2014 RT's available, I've narrowed it down to two choices. 2012 RT Ltd and 2013 RT Ltd. Both in excellent shape with mileage and price appropriate for the different years.
So I would appreciate any suggestions as to which way may be a bit better? Never had a spyder before and looking forward to the experience!

I have a 2013 RTL and love it. I have enjoyed the mounted GPS, and I like the chrome, I know some do not but I do. By the way the chrome from BRP is really good stuff.

I do not know if the 12 has grip heaters or not but my wife and I both really enjoy having them very much on our RTL.

I would get the 13, but make sure that the heat displacement recall has been done. If that is done then the 13 will give you one of the coolest temperature running Spyders in the world.

Also, if it is the Black Current color then you also have one of the fastest Spyders in the world.

Before you make that final decision and plop down a wad of cash for something you admittedly know little about. I would suggest you do a TON of reading and research here(on all the years). My bet is. It will be time well spent and will lead to a far more informed decision based on the knowledge YOU gain from YOUR research.

Again, FWIW

:doorag:

 My advice: Wait it out, and still look for a 2014, or later!

And I'm sorry that I can't be of any more help than that!

Thanks for that...I have read many of the posts here and feel I have a good handle on the issues - that is why I am still hesitant - the reliability issue is a big one. I put over 150,000 kms on my Yamaha tourer without one iota of problems - seems these bikes are not quite there yet. However - I am at the stage where 3 wheels are "almost" a necessity and I am not a fan of triked cruisers, soooo.......

Thanks...

That (2014) would be my preference but they rarely come up and sell out before I get a chance to bid....also, I am not prepared to pay asking prices for 2015 and up - sellers and dealers in Ontario do not seem to negotiate all that well

I agree very strongly with Bob. Even if you have to travel some distance with a '14 or later RT you will be getting a Spyder that requires less maintenance, has another gear in the transmission, gets better gas mileage and has more low end torque.

I am going to say it...recommend buying a 2014 or higher. The extra money spent will get you a larger (1330) engine, less maintenance (3K break-in, 9.5K or once a year oil change interval, and NO valve check service (Costing $800 extra)). Add in quieter engine operation, lower torque (more giddyup go), and lower rpm operation (3,500 vs. 5,500--ballpark). The 998 engine is now discontinued. That will affect resale in a year or two.

It's still your choice, but all the above worth considering. PS, I have had four :spyder:'s with the 998 engine and one with the 1330. I currently have one of each.

Hold out for the 14 or newer. I just traded my 13 RTL for a 16 F3T. Put over 30k miles in a year and a half on the RT but the 1330 engine is the "Cat's Meow"

Pat

 I guess that I should mention that there's nothing actually wrong with the 998s... nojoke
But from 2010 through 2012: most of the complaints about the RTs kind of came from this list:
Give it more power
We need more electrical capacity
Give it more range between fuel stops
Lower the cruising rpm
Give us an engagement clutch that doesn't cook the clutch-plates!
and the ever popular...
Will somebody take the blowtorch off of my damned right foot!!! :gaah:

BRP was listening, and fixed ALL of those issues in 2014... :2thumbs:

But those earlier RTs lit the fuse, and stoked the fires in all of us...
My 2014 is a superior ride; when I compare it to my 2010.
But the old bike still holds a special place in my heart!

No 2014s available ??
Have you considered buying from a further location and then having it shipped ?? I don't know what shipping and customs might cost.

I only say this because, having a 2010, and now a 2014, I have to agree with everyone, the 2014 or newer is a far better machine.
Between 2012 and 2013, I'd go with the 2012.

As always, my free advice comes with a double your money back guarantee.

I agree the 2014 and newer would likely have advantages but I have a 2012 and love it and cannot see the need at this point to upgrade at our prices, My 2012 has 57,000 km with no issues.

Wow, I've got a 14 Rt SE6 in Iowa for sale for only 15500. Has 5800 miles. Check Des Moines Craigslist. Nice bike!

Still in the hunt?
