A while back there was a post about seats, swamp butt, rashes, and bead riders among other things that could help make the stock seat worth more miles.
Firefly had a set of bead riders he wasn't using since he went to a custom seat and sent them to me. Here again, the generosity of spyderlovers amazes me over and over again. I've been unemployed for a few months and looks more and more like it will be longer than a few more. So in putting more miles on my spyder I knew I needed a new seat, but didn't really want to squander the funds on one. Dan offered up the bead riders and saved me a lot of coin. Thanks again Dan! If I ever convince my wife to make more Spyder sun screens, you'll be on the list!
Well, I had a chance to really test the bead riders a few weeks back. I took a week long trip with my brother to Mississippi to see my nephew. Here are my observations after 1700 miles of riding in high humidity and heat:
First day: Only about 200 miles. My butt was dry which was nice, but by the end of the ride that day my butt hurt a lot... The bead riders at that point seemed too hard for my tush.
2nd day: Ran about 200+ miles all over the Smokies before staying below the Dragon. Butt was dry, however this day my butt didn't seem as sore as it had from the bead riders as it had the day before.
3rd day: Ran the Dragon and then blasted all the way down to outside MS. Pretty much comfy. Did another 200 miles. Really hot and humid now. Ran the dragon just fine with the bead riders on the seat. Did not feel that they interfered with shifting weight from turn to turn. Didn't feel they helped either... so neutral impact for me in the twisties..and that is just fine.
4th day: Ran to Columbus Air Force Base and parked on base at the hotel for a few days. Not much riding done with air conditioned cars available and short driving on base etc...
Day 8 - Return home... I ran my longest day and highest single day mileage ever on any bike, and the Spyder. We left at 6am to avoid the worst of the heat and humidity. I ran 634 miles that day. I got home at 10pm after making stops for food, gas, scenery and a 1 hour Spyder troubleshooting and maintenance routine at a gas station. Now, it may have been just a good day, or it may have been the bead riders, but after 634 miles, my butt could have done more. I don't know if I found my groove that day or not, but the bead riders didn't hurt anything.
My overall impression of the bead riders is positive. My butt never got wet from sweat other than the normal hot and sticky feeling from humidity. I spent a couple of days running without my Monkey Butt powder applied and no rash. While every butt is different, I think anyone trying these has to give them a fair shake. One day of riding is not enough to either break them into your seat or your butt in to them.
I'm glad that I'm in Firefly's good graces. :2thumbs: Thank-you bud!
