last Thursday night on the news, they announced that old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park had finally re-opened from repairs from the September 2013 floods. Since Don was working Friday and I had the day off, I figured I'd head up to the park and drive on it. It's a dirt road, and usually by the end of summer it's pretty rutted and is questionable for Spyder clearance, though I've done it on the RT in the past. I figured it would be freshly graded and fairly smooth.
Wow! me and thousands of other people had the same great idea
. I was a little intimidated by how far back traffic was backed up at the gate to RMNP, but I figured I had all day so why not just put on my "patience" hat and enjoy the scenery with all these other people. I have an annual pass, so I was able to bypass the line once we got close enough for me to cut over to the automated pass gate (NOTE: only the RMNP annual pass card works in this gate -- at least that's what the sign says). Still that only got me into the park.
Once I got to Fall River Road, it was a 15 mile long journey in a parade at parade speeds in first gear. I think I nearly always was going 8mph, though sometimes I made it up to a whopping 12mph. pretty early on, I pulled over and took off my helmet and bungied it down onto my urban rack using the net bungy that came with the rack, then I unzipped my coat to catch whatever breeze I could, and joined the parade again.
I'm super happy to say that the engine temps never went above what I'm used to as "normal" on the F3 -- that's just slightly higher than the halfway point on the gauge. I never felt like I had hot feet or legs. It was a fantastic ride. Also all the people who saw me coming into the parking lot at the alpine visitor's center from Fall River Road on my really sweet F3S gave me big thumbs up
