"Rice Bug"?? :shocked: They don't sound dangerous; exactly how big are they? :dontknow:

They get over three inches long. They live in rice paddies and attack fish and small animals. They have two large grasping front legs and a nasty 1/3 inch long proboscis that they are too willing to thrust into whatever they grab. In the area where I was, the locals would eat them thus the reason I gave them away. I don't know how to post a pic but just google giant water bug. Plenty of pics

Bug bites..!!

Here when a highway cuts through a field the pollinating bees cross from one side to the other. If swarming you see them from a distance but the stragglers present a problem..last episode one got in between my shirt and my vest and did a similar number to yours...another got me in the neck. Looked like I had a goiter...fortunately not allergic and swelling and mobility returned shortly there after..!! :gaah:

Mid '80s, I was headed north on M-15 between Goodrich (Michigan) and Davison, about 70 mph. Caught a junebug (I think) in the Adam's apple, was able to get the bike stopped and kickstand down, but had trouble breathing or talking for almost an hour.
About 3 weeks ago, riding without gloves, 70 mph, a junebug caught the back of my left hand, left a wing case embedded, and peeled the skin about 2 inches wide from my knuckle back almost 4 inches, got infected, took 3 weeks to heal.

Bugs

Can you imagine riding without a shield and getting that in your mouth?

Back in '77 while riding my 750 4 Honda, and wearing leather jacket, a June bug got me big time. Hit directly on the oversized zipper pull and literally dented the chest....:yikes::gaah:nojoke. Hurt like hell! Suppose if I had been doing the 55 as posted...might not have hurt as much

Have had a few bug encounters, but....

About a month ago we were coming back from Alexandria Bay in NYS when a big crow was just taking off from the shoulder of the highway right in front of us. I veered to the left to try and avoid it but it just barely hit my windshield and somehow missed me but hit my wife on her arm. She said it felt like someone had hit her with a hammer . She was a little black and blue the next day.

Yesterday we were riding along a secondary road and had a sea gull pulling the same stunt as the crow did. It too hit the edge of the windshield but this time I was hit on my left hand and she was left unscathed.

Today we were on our way to the Farm Field Days in Seneca Falls, NY and narrowly missed 2 smaller birds flying directly acrossed our path.....made me "duck" no pun intended. It is almost like the birds are out to get us...could be a new version of the old movie "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock.:yikes:

I'd suggest a light 20 gauge pump, with an improved cylinder barrel if you're going to continue to hunt birds... :2thumbs: :shocked:

1st RYDE

on my very 1st ryde with my SPYD3R, i had a YELLOW JACKET get trapped inside my T-shirt on the right side... these little buggers can sting multiple times, which he/she did... i was stung 4 times, 3 in my arm pit, and once at the intersection of my arm-pit and pectoral... i like you Lamonte, beat myself silly to kill the thing (found it later when i took off my T)... my arm-pit had swollen up, and i needed one-half of a D size bra for my boob....

2nd experience; i had another bite from a wasp, it got stuck between my helmet and my head and stung me in the right temple.... NOT FUN... :lecturef_smilie:

Well this story isn't exactly a bug story. Last year while following Jake on the Spyder - in our car with the pups on our way to Spyders in the Adirondacks the car in front of Jake hit a porcupine leaving Jake no time to react so he hit it as well throwing up porcupine spikes, guts, etc all over the front of the bike, jake,and his helmet . Luckily we were about 2 minutes from the next rest area and I we pulled in well jake gets off the bike and I see at least 4 porcupine spikes sticking out of his bare arms ; - he had been riding in a Tshirt. So we proceeded to pull those out, clean up the up crude holes, and change he clothes and clean off his Helmet. Luckily no damage to the Spyder and we were able to rinse down the front of it with a hose when we arrived at rental house.

Watching Jake pull out the porcupine spikes and listening to his choice words made me glad I was in the cage for that experience. He was lucky he had a full face helmet on our his face would have definitely caught a spike or two and most likely he would have had a mouth full of guys .. Gross.

When I first moved here to East TN from San Diego I had never seen so many stinging wasp, yellow jackets and other fling bugs. I was driving out to a friends house on my Boss Hoss and I had a half helmet on and as I'm going down the road I saw this giant bug that looked to be the size of a humming bird flings at me. It was so big I had time to prepare for the impact but by time it it me and I was stung or bit or whatever it was too late. When I got to my friends house my upper lip was so swollen I looked like I got punched out. I was not happy and looked pretty silly with a big ole fat lip. pps:

This is not thee bug that hit me but I'm pretty sure it was the kind that got me back then :shocked::yikes:

I could relate the story about the June bug that went through a quilted ski jacket and two sweatshirts and drew blood, but that is another tale for another time.

Those Rice bugs in SEA. "No s*** story. A Army Special Forces unit used them for transport. Worked better then choppers.

While riding two abreast back in the "bad old days" (1970's),a hawk flew up from the side of the road, unleashed the chippy from his talons, and bounced it off my helmet. No one would believe me, except for Ray, who was a witness.

Was hit by a bird whilst doing around 70. THAT HURT BAD!

30 odd years later, a bee up the nose. Came to a skidding halt (no easy feat with the substandard brakes on a 73 Sportster). Wife thought I was having a stroke!

Lucky for you the queen wasp doesn't normally sting.

Not the species you get in the States perhaps! In the UK the little ba$tard$ are twice the size of the
males/workers and previous personal experience has shown that they do sting quite freely and it does hurt like the devil!

Yes sir! Tahkli Royal Thai AFB. Used to to hang out at the "UFO" and Tahkli Gardens . (Among other places) I used to get a kick out of the two A-37's the Thais used as bombers. They were a little bigger than the rice bugs but not by much :roflblack: I really miss good Khao Phat!! Also the "B" restaurant was a good place to eat in the Thai sector.

We were on a 1973 350 honda back in 74 or 75 driving around Oneida lake and I got a bird right in my chest. What a shock. I stood up on the pegs and, still fluttering around, it went between my legs and ended up on my wife's lap. She was able to knock it off. We were both shaking when I pulled over. I'm pretty sure it was the birds last flight.

A kamikaze bee had it in for me!!


I was Spydering the freeway at freeway speeds. Being hotter then hell (at least for Newfoundland ), I cracked my visor for fresh air.

I seen a yellow and black blur coming right at my face. While I was still processing the possibilities, and without time to react (duck!!), there was a major splat, and a bang! that ring through my helmet! And what a mess!

I was happy to have a full faced helmet on and I'd only opened it a crack. :shocked:


Sometimes bugs can come right in over the windshield. Be safe - eye/face protection a must, IMHO.
