CONTINUATION +

So yeah, I chocked the rear wheel with a tube of chapstick (placed vertically to the tire) & went inside to see about oil, which they had none. So back out to the SpYder, & its still in the same place we left it. I grab my redneck wheel chock & off we headed to the next shop. No real incline here, but why chance it & I once again use my redneck wheel chock. Teddy & I go in & of course, he finds a pretty young lady to help us locate our specific brand, which she happily does, all awhile giving Teddy as much love & attention as he can get. Back out we go, pick up my redneck wheel chock, stow it once again in the glovebox & to my friends house we go.

Ok, so back to our little story of how you SpyderLovers ended up saving us from being stranded :opps:

dang it, this work thing keeps get'n in the way of story time :banghead::banghead::banghead: TBC............................

CONTINUATION ++

Ok, so Teddy & I are at my buddies house & he's working on his computers & I do my research on SpyderLovers & find many helpful threads on the Parking Brake issue. My buddy says he's got some free time while the Virus scan runs on his daughters computer, so lets go see what we're up against . . . cool, so out to the garage we go.

1st things 1st, we strip the left side of the Spyder to get to all the neccessary components that are involved. If youv'e NOT had the pleasure of doing this yourself, there are many threads here discussing it & Lamonster even has a video showing the process *** HAVE I SAID HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS FORUM LATELY? *** So to start, open Frunk, remove black plastic piece where the BUDS hook-up is, then remove Left side mirror, then the Left side Upper & middle Body Panels that run all the way back to the Left Side Storage Compartment & WHALAH, its wide open to look at. 1st thing I notice, is I remember talking with another local Spyder Ryder (Dax) about his side panel heat shield having a melted groove in it where the round plastic piece is that the metal end of the brake cable fits into toward the front of the byke. Guess what, ours has it also, exactly as he described his to me, so obviously BRP has some work to do here in correcting this issue.

After looking at that piece of the puzzle, we look at the aforementioned round spool where the end of the cable fits into. It is still in place but you can tell it is stripped out & that would be the exact same place where the burned thru groove is on the heatshield on the backside of the panel. It appears that the pressure of the heatshield had been helping to hold the cable onto the spool & once it finally burned a groove into the heatshield, it no longer had enough pressure to hold it in place & thats when I started having problems last week. ***DISCLAIMER: This has not been proven, just seems logical to me & is my opinion at this time *** I'll post some pics of this later to help you understand better what I'm talking about. But at this time, we've discovered that the heatshield has a groove in it that it shouldn't have & that the black plastic spool that the brake cable end fits into seems to be somewhat worn & stripped, but its still intact & that shouldn't be causing the Parking Brake not to work. Also of note, is that the plastic sheath, close to the end of the cable, is worn off & you can see that IT is embedded INTO the groove of the black plastic spool where it wraps around it. So the cable end is exposed cable & the plastic sheath thats meant to protect it, is now causing issues cause its embedded into the spool groove causing there NOT to be enough room for the cable to propperly fit into said groove. Hopefully your following this ok & if NOT, when I add the pics, I think it will become more clear. But again, what I was looking at, at this point, shouldn't cause complete failure like I was experiencing, so more detective work is needed.

UGH!

Ooooopppppppsssssssssssss

Everything in the above post that I said was "LEFT" side, I meant right side, sorry, my bad :opps::opps:

Now I gotta get back to this thing called work :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

TBC ........ once again

CONTINUATION +++

Ok, so after more detective work, we start looking at the rear of the Parking Brake Cable & we come to find it is completely off the spool at the rear brake. Ok, so we slip it back over onto the spool like it should be & I'm thinking, WHOOO HOOO, that should be the fix that was needed. So, my buddy suggests since we have it all back like it should be, lets start'r up & see if it works. . . . . You know where there is head'n, don't you?

EPIC FAIL!!!!
Huh? How? Its all back together like its suppose to be, so now what? We tried it with the Spyder running, but left the side panels off, just in case this was the result. So, lets try it again, & see what is the issue. Do it again, this time watching closely & what happens? It goes to work like it should, but when the front spool goes to release & the cable goes back, it slips out of the groove flying loose again. I'm thinking that maybe without the side panel being on, theres no pressure to help hold it in place, hence the burned out groove on the heatshield of the panel. So, we replace the panel & try it again. This time, we can't see it, but I here a loud "whack" that let me know it once again popped out. UGH!!!Frustration!!! Ok, since theres a groove there, obviously IT isn't providing any support or pressure either & maybe thats the problem. So now what?

I once again grab Teddys Galaxy Tab & start more researching here on SpyderLovers.com. My buddy goes in to check his computer situation, cause he's get'n as frustrated as I am at this point. Upon further research, I read some posts about the rear causing the problem in the front. We already had the stronger spring installed by our dealer a few months back, so I didn't think that would be the issue, but it did give me reason to take a closer look at the rear spool & upon doing so, I noticed something I had not read about in all the research that I had thus far done. With having slack in the rear of the cable, I noticed that the cable actually has a break in it or more like a crack in the outter plastic sheath that goes over the cable. So when the button is pushed for the Parking Brake to engage, it would start pulling the cable into the rear spool, but would then get "stuck" when the broken part of the cable went to go onto the rear spool, causing the front to have excess slack & then causing it to "pop" out of the front spool. Ok, so now what??? UGH!!!

So more research is needed. Tab, SpyderLovers, search, read read read. Aha, so you can actually use your hand & physically move the rear spool into place & set the parking brake. I start the Spyder & hold the foot brake & have my buddy reach down & turn the rear spool as I push the Parking Brake button & WHAA LHA! the parking brake sets without popping out.

Ok, so I know Ive gotta get the front spool & the cable itself replaced, but at least now, I can set the parking brake, albeit by hand. At least now we can make it home.................... or so I thought. So, we get everything put back together, get Teddy geared up & prepare to take our leave in 26 degree weather. I tell my buddy thanks for all his help & push the parking brake button to release it & start rolling on the throttle, only to have the engine start revving higher & us sitting in place with the parking brake holding us still!!! WTF!!!NOW WHAT?!?!?! I thought we were all set, but now, here we are with the parking brake locked in position. I believe my buddy was half hearted laughing, more in disgust than anything, that after all we had just done, thinking we figured it all out & now I can't even move the byke out of the garage. So, off the byke I go. hmmmmmm...... my buddy asks, "now what you got to get outta this?"

hmmmmmmmm....... you know, I got Scotty & Lamonts numbers, I bet if I can get ahold of one of them, I'm sure they can walk me through this." I wonder how many other SpyderLovers out there have discussed with their non-Spyder owner buddies how much knowledge these two ppl in particular have when it comes to Spyders? I know myself for one, speak VERY HIGHLY of both Scotty & Lamont (among others) & that I wish I knew half as much anout these wonderful machines as these two guys know. And it makes it all the more better, having met them both in person & knowing what genuine, quality guys they both are.

So at this point, I'm thinking we're stranded for the night, as it was now close to 9pm on Sunday evening. My buddy works at the same plant as I & starts at the same time I do. So, I'm thinking, even tho I have nothing at his place, Teddy & I could spend the night, get up WAY early (like 4am) & catch a ryde in to work with him in the morning & dropping Teddy off at my place. Then I could call the shop & see when they could get me in. Problem is, my buddies cat HATES Teddy & my buddy just got new carpet last week & the cat is having "issues" cause Teddy is there so much & we're afraid the cat will start "Spraying" showing his disatisfaction with a dog being on his territory. So Doug asks if theres any other options? which I completely understood, I mean the cat lives there & I didn't want to make it any worse.

So, once again, Tab, SpyderLovers, Search and read read read. Oh wow, I didn't know that. Hmmmmmm....... I think I found a temporary solution. I was under the impression, that you couldn't ryde with a parking brake malfunction on an SE5 equipped Spyder or it would throw a code & the Spyder would go into the dreaded "LIMP HOME MODE" But after further research on here, I found a post from one SpyderLover that had to ryde with a parking brake malfunction & they relayed that the byke would light up like a Christmas tree with warning messages, but that it DIDN'T go into LIMP MODE. Ok, so lets just unhook both ends of the cable, which it was basically like when we began this whole ordeal. So, we undid both ends & I went for a quick trip around the neighborhood to see if it would be ok to ryde, or instead, we'd get the dreaded LIMP MODE. It did just as the other poster said, lit up like crazy, & is annoying as hell, cause the fault actually displays in the entire LCD screen, instead of just at the bottom middle, like if your rear trunk is open. This fault, all orange "PARKING BRAKE FAILURE FAULT" lights up the entire screen & whats worse, stays that way til you reach 40 or 45 mph, then it changes back to the regular screen with the warning light is only displayed in the bottom middle of the screen. But as soon as you stop, like at a light or stop sign, it comes back again, & once again stays that way til you get back up to speed. This still allows you to ryde, just being rather annoying & somewhat embarrassing when the car next to you looks over & sees your screen lit up like that. You can press the scroll button to get away from the orange screen, but once you slow down again, it comes back. But, at least we could still ryde without "LIMP HOME MODE".

We made it home without further complications that night. But without all of the SpyderLovers sharing of their expeirences on this forum, we truely would have been stranded that night. So, I would like to thank EACH & EVERY ONE of you for posting & sharing your thoughts & experiences here. You may not know us personally, but you have helped us. THANK YOU ALL !!!

While out today, we clicked over 20,000 miles

Went up the other day to Middletown Cycle & Teddy had a blast visiting with everyone up there. I swear, this dog has everyone wrapped & when he doesn't, he knows how to play them, with even using the puppy dog eyes & look, I'm being a good boy & sure enough, he'd end up get'n what he wanted.

So I think we got everything ordered that we need to get his Spyder back in shape. The lower left hand side rain diverter which broke off when we hit a pot-hole to my shock & surprise should only cost us around $20. The windshield mount has to be ordered with the motor as well, between $400 & $600, but that should be covered under Warranty. The broken brake cable & front spool should also be covered under Warranty. Along with all this, we're also getting our rear brake pad replaced and a new rear tire. 20,000 miles, as of today & theres not much meat left on this baby, thats for sure.

After a year & a half of hearing about the Tedster, my co-worker finally met him

The dept. I work in only has 1 other employee & thats Mary & we get along really well (thank goodness) & ever since we got our first Spyder back in May of last year, she's been hearing all of Teddys antics along with most of the pics, but until this past weekend, she had never met him. A buddy of hers owns a bar up in Middletown Ohio, not all that far from our shop, Middletown Cycle & Mary frequently helps out & works there when needed. When we finished our shop visit, I sent Mary a text to see if she was by chance working & if so, would she like to meet the Tedster in person. She replied that she would be there in about 15 minutes & HELL YEAH, I wanna meet the lil Star!

So we made our way down to the bar & Teddy had on his Christmas outfit & of course, when we pulled in the parking lot of the bar, he was standing up in his seat with his 2 front paws braced against my back, showing off & doing his best pose'n. As soon as we came to a stop, the door to the bar opens & out pops Mary laughing hysterically at the sight before her. (quick side note, Mary has never liked Teddy being shaved & has always told me she thinks he looks much better with his full coat) Well right now, he's got about 3/4 of his full length coat & she was in love with him.She was amazed how he rydes like he does standing up & posing at times, & just sit'n at others. Well, next thing I know, the entire bar is outside & Mary is introducing me & Teddy to everyone. She's telling them "see, this is the dog Ive been telling y'all about for so long, now you can see for yourself." The crowd was enamored with the little guy & then all the camera phones started popping up & the pose'n for pics, which Teddy readily posed for. While he was pose'n for others, Mary snuck over to her SUV & opened the back hatch up & out she pulls a Stcking full of doggy treats & toys & brings it over & gives to me for Teddy. OMG!!! Are you serious? Yup, I got this for him the other day & was going to give it to you for him at work, but since yur here now, might as well. WoW, ok, thank you & of course Teddy showered her with lickens of appreciation as well. I had to break out & give him a couple of the treats & as usual, he ate them up like he'd been starving for months. Whenever we get food or treats out, I make him "work" for them, by doing his little tricks of sit, lay, shake & high five. So, if he didn't have them all in love with him before, he sure did now. We were there about a 1/2 hour & I explained that we needed to be head'n back toward home, cause it was now about 4pm & it gets dark, & colder around 5 & we were a good 45-50 minutes away from home. I think just about everyone was still out there, wanting to actually see him ryde'n away on his Spyder. It was another great time with the lil Star & I was so glad that Mary & her friends got to meet him in person. She told me right before we left, that yeah, no doubt about it, Teddy IS A STAR!!!

The deadly streets of Cincinnati & a humbling reality check

So I got sent home again, TLO for a 1/2 day again. Always seems to get worse right before the holidays, go figure. Right now, we're having a very mild weather pattern here in the Cincy area with temps averaging in the 40s & 50s even, but as usual for this year, more rain, rain & more rain. Think we're something like 12 inches over the all-time historical rainfall record for our area, & we still have more in the forecast. So its about noon & Im on Interstate 75 South head'n for home, cruising around 60 mph, when out of nowhere, all traffic stops & not in an area where backups usually happen. It was grey & very overcast, but most of the roads were clear & dry with just scattered pockets of drizzle/mist to deal with. So yeah, from 60 to zero in no time, great, hope that didn't warp my rear rotor, as the rear brake pad is almost gone & its getting replaced along with the rear tire as soon as Middletown calls & tells me all the parts are in. So now I'm just sitting there with everybody else on the highway, inching forward every few minutes, getting more & more frustrated as the time slowly passed. There were no off-ramps or side roads to take, so I was stuck along with everyone else. Also adding to my frustration is that the PARKING BRAKE FAILURE light keeps taking over the entire LCD so I cant see any of the info thats usually displayed. And to be totally honest, I think embarrasement more than anything was really getting to me. When any other cars besides me would get up even, thats the first thing they see when checking out the "cock-pit" area of the Spyder, cause the entire LCD screen is BLARING ORANGE with the LARGE PARKING BRAKE FAILURE notice. I could see on ppls faces, their looks of concern that I was stuck in traffic with this AWESOME looking machine & it was broke. I even had two different cars roll down their windows & their drivers asking if I needed assistance, to which I would thank them for their offer & explained that the byke was fine, & that it was just a sensor that needs replaced. So much for the Spyders reliability in these ppls minds. My face red with frustration & embarrasement until I finally pulled down the safety card from the top dash so it would block the view of the LCD from all other cars around. Only, on Teds Red Sled, I replaced the BRP safety card with a different one I got off of ebay last year. It has a picture of an RS Spyder, a stick figure laying on the ground & another stick figure standing over the first one waving a bat. The caption reads, DON'T MESSS WITH MY SPYDER. I like that much better than the error message, thats for sure.-So yeah, moving along at a snails pace & I finally come to the reason the traffic had stopped. A small car was up against the concrete barrier, with much of the drivers side mangled & a little ways up, a semi pulled over with his emergency flashers on. OH WOW!!! My heart sank & it felt like I had a frog in my throat. This had just happened cause debris was strewn across the highway with the far lane mostly clear & thats where all the traffic was merging to get by, cause their were still no Emergency crews or cops on the scene yet, but oddly, I didn't see any of the ppl that were involved, either from the totalled car nor the semi. Assuming a good semaritan stopped & took them, if they were injured to the hospital, but not sure.-Once I got passed this awful scene, my feeling of frstration gave way to an enormous sense of guilt & of being ashamed. I mean, someone could have died there & here I was being all frustrated & Embarrassed because I was inconvienced a little bit. After I passed, I said a prayer for those involved & their loved ones, and selfishly, for myself, that I might I have the patience & understanding the next time a similar situation presents itself & not get so out of hand.-Once I got home, I turned on the news & then things became more clear. I now knew why there were no emergency vehicles on scene of the accident I got stuck in. Apparently, most of the Emergency crews were involved with another accident on but this time, on Interstate 71, which was so bad, that they had to close the entire Interstate for more than 4 hours & sadly, a man did lose his life. A honda accord & semi collided & in turn, hitting a jeep, whose driver was not wearing his seat belt & it flipped numerous times, throwing him from the vehicle & killing him. -Once again, I said a prayer for those involved & this time, I gave thanks for my own safety & life. Guess we all need a reality check every now & then. Dont think Teddy will ever understand why I hugged him for so long, but thats ok, cause I do.

Amazing, the 1st day of winter & it was almost 60 degrees today & we saw the sun

As soon as I got home from work I geared Teddy up & off ryde'n we went. Visited my brother for a little while & stopped by the park to let Teddy run around a little. Actually got pulled over by 3 young ladies in a car that were begging me to stop so they could take pics of Teddy in his Christmas ryde'n gear, so I did & they were amazed with the lil guy & he got all kinds of good lick'ns in :D Oh the lyfe this dog enjoys:D

I think I need to seek Professional Help

Is it wrong to be jealous of ones own dog? Seriously, it is, isn't it?Even when the lil guy isn't with me, he's still an attention getter. Like this morning on the ryde in to work, I stopped by the drive-thru for a quick bite to take in to work with me. The guy at the window saw my cell phone mounted on the glove-box of Teds Red Sled, & asked what the pic on my phone was? I have a pic of Teddy in his Xmas gear as the background on my phone & the guy saw it but couldn't make it out from as far away as he was, so I took the phone out of its cradle & showed the guy & explained that he rydes with me every day except now, when I'm going to work. The guy busted out laughing & yelling for his co-workers to come to the window & check this out. Here comes the whole bunch, and all were smiling and laughing. I explained how its Teddys byke & I'm just his cheuffer & even this guy made the comment, "Man, I wish I were your dog, he's got it made." Sad thing is, he's right & I ALSO wish I were My dog. Yup, time to call the doctor, something is amiss here.

I hope there is such a thing as re-incarnation, and I hope I come back as a supermodel's dog. Just saying.

Maybe Im worse than I thought - Am I really THAT messed up?

Teddy & I stopped by my doctors office so I could get a referral for a psychologist & she agreed that I should see someone & gave me two different referrals. I was a little shocked when the first one returned my call & after explaining the issues, she suggested that I needed more help than she could provide me :yikes: & that I should keep looking for a highly specialized therapist that may be able to help me :p Seriously:shocked:

A few things to consider if your Spyder is your only mode of transportation

1) It really helps to control "Impulse Buying"
EX: Was at Walmart the other day & saw that they had the new RC Spyder & thought I would get one for my nephew. Oh, I hadn't planned on that so we didn't bring our camper with us, and the box that the RC Spyder comes in was too large to fit in any of Teds Red Sled's trunks & Teddy wasn't giving up his seat. Hmmmm, need to give Inspector Gadget a call & get one of his nifty lil luggage racks = problem solved.

2) It can be an issue if you need to unexpectedly transport children:
EX: When I took Teddy down to the Halloween costume Paw-Rade, I called my best friend to see if he & his daughter wanted to attend with us. He couldn't but his daughter wanted to badly,
but I would have to pick her up & return her & she's not tall enough yet to reach the passenger foot pegs, so I won't ryde her except for just around the side streets in her neighborhood. We
were both saddend that she couldn't join us. Better planning on my part & we could have avoided this, I know.

3) When you go to work on your Spyder, make sure you have everything you will need, & the tools work, before hand:
EX: I gathered everything needed to do an oil change on Teds Red Sled, in fact, its out in the garage right now, up in the air on jack stands with the panels off & waiting. I went to change the
fixture on the ratchet, only I can't get it off & I've tried everything I know. Hmmmm, damn! At least I haven't drained any of the oil yet & I can still put it all back together & lower it back to
the garage floor & use it to go to the auto-parts store to get a new ratchet. Otherwise, I'd be waiting on family or friends to come to our rescue or Teddy & I would have a long walk. Wow,
thats sad, it just occured to me that we DO live on a bus line, tho I've never taken a bus since I was in school. Or we could always take a cab, as we do live in an urban area, DUH! lol

4) You undoubtedly know that you will be watching the weather reports regularly & praying for NO SNOW OR ICE- At least NOT allot:

These are just some of the issues I've personally come to deal with, as Teds Red Sled has been our only mode of transport for the past year & a half now, minus a total of 9 days last year that we
used the car for one reason or another. I haven't used it at all since we've gotten his new 2011 Viper Red Sled back in May:thumbup:

Just thought I'd share these thoughts with y'all to help better educate perspective owners out there, that along with having the proper gear, the RT Spyder CAN be the only vehicle that you need, depending of course on your regional climate & family use/needs. IT WORKS FOR US :D

If the socket is stuck on the ratchet, pry it off with a flat screwdriver. Then oil the ball on the square drive and compress it a few times with some pliers or channel locks. That should get you back in business. Sometimes these things are stubborn, especially on the cheaper ratchets.

I take my 7 year old son on the back of my rt everywhere. He can't reach the passenger pegs from a seated position either. I've never once worried about him falling off. Stays on just fine thanks to the backrest and the passengers handles (which he rarely needs) And a less aggressive driving attitude.

Won't take m anywhere without a helmet though.

I urge you to reconsider doing this. In an accident, he is in great jeopardy! nojoke
