CONTINUATION +++
Ok, so after more detective work, we start looking at the rear of the Parking Brake Cable & we come to find it is completely off the spool at the rear brake. Ok, so we slip it back over onto the spool like it should be & I'm thinking, WHOOO HOOO, that should be the fix that was needed. So, my buddy suggests since we have it all back like it should be, lets start'r up & see if it works. . . . . You know where there is head'n, don't you?
EPIC FAIL!!!!
Huh? How? Its all back together like its suppose to be, so now what? We tried it with the Spyder running, but left the side panels off, just in case this was the result. So, lets try it again, & see what is the issue. Do it again, this time watching closely & what happens? It goes to work like it should, but when the front spool goes to release & the cable goes back, it slips out of the groove flying loose again. I'm thinking that maybe without the side panel being on, theres no pressure to help hold it in place, hence the burned out groove on the heatshield of the panel. So, we replace the panel & try it again. This time, we can't see it, but I here a loud "whack" that let me know it once again popped out. UGH!!!Frustration!!! Ok, since theres a groove there, obviously IT isn't providing any support or pressure either & maybe thats the problem. So now what?
I once again grab Teddys Galaxy Tab & start more researching here on SpyderLovers.com. My buddy goes in to check his computer situation, cause he's get'n as frustrated as I am at this point. Upon further research, I read some posts about the rear causing the problem in the front. We already had the stronger spring installed by our dealer a few months back, so I didn't think that would be the issue, but it did give me reason to take a closer look at the rear spool & upon doing so, I noticed something I had not read about in all the research that I had thus far done. With having slack in the rear of the cable, I noticed that the cable actually has a break in it or more like a crack in the outter plastic sheath that goes over the cable. So when the button is pushed for the Parking Brake to engage, it would start pulling the cable into the rear spool, but would then get "stuck" when the broken part of the cable went to go onto the rear spool, causing the front to have excess slack & then causing it to "pop" out of the front spool. Ok, so now what??? UGH!!!
So more research is needed. Tab, SpyderLovers, search, read read read. Aha, so you can actually use your hand & physically move the rear spool into place & set the parking brake. I start the Spyder & hold the foot brake & have my buddy reach down & turn the rear spool as I push the Parking Brake button & WHAA LHA! the parking brake sets without popping out.
Ok, so I know Ive gotta get the front spool & the cable itself replaced, but at least now, I can set the parking brake, albeit by hand. At least now we can make it home.................... or so I thought. So, we get everything put back together, get Teddy geared up & prepare to take our leave in 26 degree weather. I tell my buddy thanks for all his help & push the parking brake button to release it & start rolling on the throttle, only to have the engine start revving higher & us sitting in place with the parking brake holding us still!!! WTF!!!NOW WHAT?!?!?! I thought we were all set, but now, here we are with the parking brake locked in position. I believe my buddy was half hearted laughing, more in disgust than anything, that after all we had just done, thinking we figured it all out & now I can't even move the byke out of the garage. So, off the byke I go. hmmmmmm...... my buddy asks, "now what you got to get outta this?"
hmmmmmmmm....... you know, I got Scotty & Lamonts numbers, I bet if I can get ahold of one of them, I'm sure they can walk me through this." I wonder how many other SpyderLovers out there have discussed with their non-Spyder owner buddies how much knowledge these two ppl in particular have when it comes to Spyders? I know myself for one, speak VERY HIGHLY of both Scotty & Lamont (among others) & that I wish I knew half as much anout these wonderful machines as these two guys know. And it makes it all the more better, having met them both in person & knowing what genuine, quality guys they both are.
So at this point, I'm thinking we're stranded for the night, as it was now close to 9pm on Sunday evening. My buddy works at the same plant as I & starts at the same time I do. So, I'm thinking, even tho I have nothing at his place, Teddy & I could spend the night, get up WAY early (like 4am) & catch a ryde in to work with him in the morning & dropping Teddy off at my place. Then I could call the shop & see when they could get me in. Problem is, my buddies cat HATES Teddy & my buddy just got new carpet last week & the cat is having "issues" cause Teddy is there so much & we're afraid the cat will start "Spraying" showing his disatisfaction with a dog being on his territory. So Doug asks if theres any other options? which I completely understood, I mean the cat lives there & I didn't want to make it any worse.
So, once again, Tab, SpyderLovers, Search and read read read. Oh wow, I didn't know that. Hmmmmmm....... I think I found a temporary solution. I was under the impression, that you couldn't ryde with a parking brake malfunction on an SE5 equipped Spyder or it would throw a code & the Spyder would go into the dreaded "LIMP HOME MODE" But after further research on here, I found a post from one SpyderLover that had to ryde with a parking brake malfunction & they relayed that the byke would light up like a Christmas tree with warning messages, but that it DIDN'T go into LIMP MODE. Ok, so lets just unhook both ends of the cable, which it was basically like when we began this whole ordeal. So, we undid both ends & I went for a quick trip around the neighborhood to see if it would be ok to ryde, or instead, we'd get the dreaded LIMP MODE. It did just as the other poster said, lit up like crazy, & is annoying as hell, cause the fault actually displays in the entire LCD screen, instead of just at the bottom middle, like if your rear trunk is open. This fault, all orange "PARKING BRAKE FAILURE FAULT" lights up the entire screen & whats worse, stays that way til you reach 40 or 45 mph, then it changes back to the regular screen with the warning light is only displayed in the bottom middle of the screen. But as soon as you stop, like at a light or stop sign, it comes back again, & once again stays that way til you get back up to speed. This still allows you to ryde, just being rather annoying & somewhat embarrassing when the car next to you looks over & sees your screen lit up like that. You can press the scroll button to get away from the orange screen, but once you slow down again, it comes back. But, at least we could still ryde without "LIMP HOME MODE".
We made it home without further complications that night. But without all of the SpyderLovers sharing of their expeirences on this forum, we truely would have been stranded that night. So, I would like to thank EACH & EVERY ONE of you for posting & sharing your thoughts & experiences here. You may not know us personally, but you have helped us. THANK YOU ALL !!!
