Switching off without the parking brake?

Hi folks.
Is it possible to switch off the ignition without setting the parking brake on the RT? I know I can but not without the parking brake alarm kicking in and driving me nuts. Is there a workaround for this? :hun::helpsmilie:

What parking brake alarm? I almost never use the parking brake and have yet to be "alarmed" about anything. Ahhh... I see you are astride an SE. Maybe that's why? If my RT SM is in gear, it isn't going anywhere.

yes you can turn it off without having the parking on,the alarm well stop in about 30 seconds. Don't for get about the parking break being off thow before you go some were else.

Lucky you! I have the 2011 RT-S SE5. If I switch off the ignition without first pressing the switch for the parking brake a VERY loud beep, beep, beep alarm sounds off. :yikes: Then I have to turn the ignition back on and set the parking brake. I can't be the only one with this setup cos my dealer walked me through it when I took delivery. :opps:

Thanks for your post, I had no idea that it would ONLY last 30 seconds! God help my neighbours when I try this in the morning, that sucker is LOUD! ;) I'll phone to let them know we are not on fire or being burgled!

It's really none of my business but I must ask.
Why do you feel it necessary not to use the parking brake?

I've tried washing (cleaning) the rear wheel area by rolling the trike forward a bit at a time and it works but not very well.

I now have an Arcan trolley jack to lift the rear wheel clear of the ground making cleaning easier but I have to have the ignition on while I do this in order to turn the wheel by hand. It doesn't seem right to have the ignition on for a prolonged time, hence the Q ref the parking alarm. ;)

Got to set the parking brake ( RT SE5 ) when you shut the :spyder2: off or you will get the alarm.

:agree:I have a 2010 RT-S SE5 and have to set the parking brake when you shut the :f_spider: off or you will get the parking brake alarm. I always use the parking brake so no big deal for me:2thumbs:

Never having owned (or ridden) an SE, I hadn't thought about what a pain it would be to service with that alarm. Thanks for opening my eyes. I wish I had a work-around for you.

Geoff-
I too clean mine by rolling it in my garage. You are right about the 'brake nanny'. So I leave the key on. I have left it on with the radio playing for about 3 hours with no issues. It started right up! Sounds bad to leave it on that long, but it's not. I have a battery tender that is standing by to slowly bring it back to life IF it failed :)

Maybe you can leave the key on and the kill switch off. :dontknow:

A work-around is exectly what I need Scotty to bypass that pesky alarm, maybe using a series of obscure button presses or key turns, in conjunction with an auto-reset when I'm through.

The all-wheels parking brake is a useful theft deterrent and also an important safety feature of the SE5, it cannot be left in gear and without the parking brake engaged it would be free to run away down a hill and maybe kill people. For peace of mind alone the alarm earns its keep.

Had the same problems on the beginning - but its ok .. did you know that its impossible to bring the SE in the first gear when it rolls .. we have a lot of mountains here - one time we stopped and I let her run downhill without a gear switched in - had to stop complete to bring in a gear ..

Thanks Phil, you've taken away some of my nervousness surrounding this topic. There is no warning about leaving the key 'on' for a prolonged time in the manual but I didn't take that to mean it was OK to do so! Electronics are mostly a mystery to me so I favour a cautious approach. :dontknow:

I use a battery tender, too. It's a C-Tek and I wouldn't be without it. It kept the gel battery on my BeeEmm in good condition for 9 years and it was still going strong when the bike's new owner rode off into the sunset earlier this year! Plug it and forget it all winter long.

Now it watches over the Spyder on a daily basis. I've installed a socket especially for it under the left passenger hand grip - there's a push-out power socket blank just there.

If we can't unhook the alarm, can we muffle it? What part of what gizmo needs to be stuffed with a rag in order to quiet it down about three notches?

The parking brake on the Spyder only locks the rear wheel.

But then I slid my floor jack underneath and could freely spin the front wheels....

Wow! That is just amazing, Roger!

When the parking brake is on I thought the depression of the foot brake worked the front brakes and the pull on the cable activated the rear brake. The thing is, in normal riding if I press the foot brake down about the same amount as the parking brake all three wheels are definitely braked. So what is going on here?

The obvious bad news is if anything happens to that cable to stop it working when parked there is no brake available at all! Now that could be really nasty. Wow! :sour::dontknow:

Geoff - I think what is going on is we are feeling the brake pedal pressure exerted on the rear caliper by the cable.

I'm sure you are right. When the engine is running there is ABS all round which means hydraulic braking is in operation. This obviously is non-operational when parked, instead it relies on a motor and pulley system to operate the rear brake caliper, and ONLY the rear brake caliper.

Once more I've had my eyes opened by the good people who post here. But finding out today that all parked braking on my Spyder is reliant on a cable going to one brake only, a cable which easily becomes detached, has not been so good. Actually, I am quite concerned. :(

I have a 2010 RT manual transmission and I have no such alarm. I can leave the parking brake off and park it in gear. It's a lot easier to roll around in teh garage if you need to service it.

But if I DID have that loud beep beep alarm, I'd disconnect it from the parking brake and install it as a back up alarm. I'd LOVE to have a back up alarm.

Not that backing the Spyder is dangerous, I just want to call attention to the fact that I have REVERSE !!!
