• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Surging and rough running

I have an 08 SM5 with about 14k miles.. I experience surging a some rough running at 20-30mph after running long and fast for a while. Yesterday, after about a 3 hr ride, I also had a strong gas smell when I got home. The y gaskets were just replaced. I don't have these issues when the bike is cool, only after getting real warmed up. Any ideas?

Interesting...when I ride hard for a while and shut the bike off, it runs roughly for a while when I get going again (say after lunch)...I have no idea what this is due to.

Yesterday, I was out for a 150 mile ride and I noticed that when coasting and gently accelerating in 4th gear, I had some popping, at time...I think my JB is still configured too high...??

Could be purge valve or purge valve solenoid problems, allowing the throttle body to load with vent fumes when it shouldn't. Have your dealer do some tests. BUDS won't show this one, but is used for some of the testing.

I have this same problem quite often in the summer (in the winter it's fine????).....I think I am on the third purge valve.

Experiment, Igor!

When, some time back, I suspected that I was having trouble caused by the purge valve, I got a small pair of vyse-grip pliers and clamped the hose from the purge valve to the throttle body.

If you try this and the problem goes away, you have a pointer to the problem. If the problem doesn't go away, you have crossed one thing off the list. You can't lose! :2thumbs:

Cheers;

Pogo.

Got the ECM update done today. No more surging and the bike runs much smoother. Guess I should have asked for this sooner!

Was that the one they were calling the Engine Performance Optimization Update? I know that surging between 3,000 and 4,000 RPMs is something that was supposed to take care of.

I don't know what it is called. I believe I read here somewhere that it came out in August 2009. Whatever it is called, it helped me tremendously.

My new 2010 RT-S is pulsing/surging around 3k to 4k RPM while I am in 3rd., 4th., and 5th. Asked the dealer today and he said could simply be it's in the "break-in" period and Roadster only has @ 550 miles on it.

Hmmm....??? :chat:

Now I understand why brp detuned the engine I can imagine the complaints if they would have left it as peaky as the aprilla version

That's low rpm for the rotax it's a lot smoother and efficient around 5 - 6 k
:agree: The RT does not particularly like low rpm, especially under load or rolling on the throttle.

I would not be complaining one bit. In fact, I am hoping the do something with the Spyder like they do with the watercraft and come out with an RXP, or GTX, model that is not tuned down at all. If a SeaDoo can have 255 horsepower, why can't we? :2thumbs:

The back tire's not wide and sticky enough to hold 225 hp. There would probably be a lot more drive train failures. But it sure would be fun!:D
