Summer trip Colorado

Would like some info on Colorado. My group that I do my Summer vacation trips with are thinking of touring Colorado this summer. We would like to set up a base camp concept, we usually tent it and would like to set up where there are showers and laundry facilities and 110 volt sites. We would do day trips from there. I would like to ask for some suggestions for the best location to set up to day trip on scenic, historic paved routes. Some route suggestions would be welcome too. We don't expect to get all of Colorado in two weeks so we want to set up where we can get the most scenery out of day trips. Thanks for any info.

Last time we went to the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis (2003), on the way back, we stayed here http://www.riverviewrv.com/. We were tent camping. Gives you a good jump off to a lot of places and it is/was a great park.

I rode through CO on my cross-country trip last Spring. I stayed in Steamboat Springs which has a bunch of camping areas in the vicinity. Campgrounds are littered throughout the Steamboat area in locations like Routt National Forest and Stagecoach State Park. In any direction that you travel from town, you'll find a campground. Some popular campgrounds include Seedhouse Campground, a 24-site location that is north of town on County Road 129, the 22-site Dumont Lake Campground southeast of town on top of Rabbit Ears Pass, and Steamboat Lake State Park, which has nearly 200 campsites and is 27 miles north of Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat Springs is centrally located with GREAT day trips to Medicine Bow National Forest (2.5 hours), Routt National Forest (1.5 hours), Arapaho National Forest (2 hours), and Estes Park and Roosevelt National Forest (4 hours)

I'd highly recommend that as at least one of your stops for 3-5 days

I would recommend seeing Garden of the Gods park in Colorado City and the Royal Gorge near Canon City. Also in the area is Pikes Peak. Sounds like you are planning a great summer trip!

you may also look into Ouray-BoxCanyon Falls are awesome,Silverton Narrow gauge railroad,Ridgeway State Park- Million Doller Highway, Also Durango All Are really quite Great fun to see and ride. Might also post in the states catagory and see if there is anyone in the area you plan on being help get around. I am from Grand Junction area and travel these areas often.

I agree with both of the previous posts. Both areas are nice and worth seeing. I would also definitely recommend going down to southwest area of the state. Durango(ride the Durango to Silverton train), Ouray and Telluride. Beautiful mountains and scenery. Great mountain roads. U.S 550 also known as the Million dollar highway is a must ride. Make sure one drives and one looks. It's a long way down and very narrow in certain areas.
I'm sure some of our Colorado SpyderLovers can kick in and give you some great ideas.

Hey Babymoose...love the name!
We're in Durango, CO, very southwest corner. From here we ride to Creede and Lake City and either come back or make the loop over to Montrose and back over Red Mtn. Durango to Silverton and Ouray as has already been mentioned. Durango to Pagosa Springs, Chama,New Mexico, back through Dulce,NM to Aztec, NM and back to Durango. Do a loop from Durango to Dolores, Telluride, Ridgeway, Red Mtn Pass, Silverton and back to Durango.
There's really a lot of short or long day rides from Durango. Feel free to contact me if you come this way.

I have a home in Leadville Colorado and Leadville is pretty darn close to being in the center part of Colorado and close to a lot of sights and beautiful rides. Here's a link to the local RV/campground:

A nice ride is from Leadville down to Twin Lakes then up over Independence Pass then ride on down to Aspen, CO. Lot of mountain riding there and you may even get to play in the snow on the pass at 12,000 feet. From Aspen you can ride on up to Glenwood Springs (where Doc Holiday passed away and suppose to be buried there) then head east through Glenwood Canyon (major pic opportunities there!) on one of the most Eco friendly highways built in the US. then you'll drive up I-70 through Eagle (remember the Kobe Bryant thing?), Avon (Beaver Creek resort), through Vail, CO, then up over Vail Pass for some more beautiful pic opportunities, down to Copper Mountain ski resort where you'll swing back over to Leadville on Rt 91 for some more great pic ops then back to the Campground.
You can make a day out of it or half day, which ever you prefer. That's just one of many rides through Colorado. The ride from Denver to Leadville on I-70 is a beautiful ride in itself. Take a ride up through Golden to Boulder and Boulder to Estes Park, CO. Great ride and beautiful views! Definitely stay over night in Estes and ride the back way through Grandby and back to Leadville. Anywhooooo......
I can go on forever, but if you mapquest any major location in CO from Leadville, you're guaranteed a beautiful ride no matter where you go and which direction! Rt 285 from Buena Vista to Denver is awesome! Nice back way ride to Colorado Springs from there too!!!!!

Everyone has given you some great choices to ride around Colorado. I have gotten the chance to ride much since I bought the Spyder. Between deployments and the bike sitting in the shop. When you make plans a nd arrive here in Colorado look me up. I would love to get some riding in..

Thanks again guys for all the great responses. I will take this to my riding partners on April 2nd and see if the interest is still there. There are lots of place to see and go to. If we get down that way I will get back to the Colorado riders with our itinerary and see how that works.

One of the best rides you'll find in Colorado is from Denver on RT 285 thru Salida, over Wolf Creek Pass into Durango/Cortez.....Hard to beat
