Stupid Turn Signals

"the RT turn signal is a bit more finicky about the cancellation, but I hardly think this is the big safety issue that many of stated it is. The signals WILL turn off on their own after a period of time" and "The turnsignal switch takes a bit of getting used to; but if I can get it figured out, anybody in here can! A little time and patience..."

Seems to about reflect BRP's attitude of denial on this as the problem has been around for several years... If it was just an aggravation, like shaking mirrors, it would be one thing but this one does have some safety implications. It also doesnt seem like a big deal for a mfg to fix if they were concerned.

I've noticed the RT turn signal is a bit more finicky about the cancellation, but I hardly think this is the big safety issue that many of stated it is. The signals WILL turn off on their own after a period of time.

As far as pressing the turn signal twice, or holding and having it cancel..... doesn't work on mine.:dontknow:

I respectfully disagree. The second or two that is required to look at the dash to see if the blinker is cancelled & not blinking th opposite direction, is a second or two in which the dynamics of the traffic around me can change I'm distracted. Not to mention giving confusing signals to the vehicles around me concerning my intentions. It is a foolish design that may eventually be a factor in an accident. There is no reason to have to visually check your dash to see if your blinkers are on or off.

I filed a complaint with Department of Transportation ( https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ ) last year. I'd like to see BRP address this problem before it causes a tragic loss.

Don't you look at the dash to check your speed, RPM's, radio station, temp, time, etc.?

If there's no reason to have to visually check the dash to see if the blinkers are on or off while moving, then why does every manufacturer put indicator lights on the dash?

I don't find making a lane change and having your signal stay on for 30 seconds to be something that will generally cause a catastrophic event, but I do agree the switch is touchy.

If only they did cancel after 30 seconds. Mine do not & I believe Dave related on an incident where he followed an RT that had the blinker on for 3 miles. It's an unnecessary distraction that has the potential to contribute to an accident. There have been times when I am in an unfamiliar city in heavy traffic and trying to make quick lane changes to get to an upcoming exit where these concerns became a real issue. I guess until it happens to you, you may not consider it a real problem, but I do.

Checking speed, RPMs and radio settings can be done when I have the opportunity. Using the turn signal properly should be a process that doesn't require my eyes to leave the road. On the RT, I can either not use them, use them without looking and risk giving wrong signals of my intentions to other drivers, or use them and then visually check to see if I have successfully canceled them. I see no good option.

I believe BRP should fix this problem before someone is hurt or dies because of the switch's contribution to an accident.

The turnsignal switch takes a bit of getting used to; but if I can get it figured out, anybody in here can!
A little time and patience...

Hey Bob I must be a real slow learner . Got 20,000 miles on the RT and still have trouble with the turn signals. Had 30,000 miles on the RS and never had an issue . Must be old age or maybe ---------

Turn signal switch

Talk to your dealer. Had the same problems everyone is describing in addition to not returning to center location from the left. Noted this problem on my 2011 RTS when changing lanes. Tried the lub and it helped some but sill a problem. The dealer installed a newer version and it works like a charm. BRP does have a new switch according to my dealer. It was a pain to replace about 2 hours labor because the connecting plug is buried deep inside the bodywork. Good luck.

Old fashioned hand signals maybe ?? But then on the other hand no other drivers but us "older " farts would know what they mean. Probably signal left and everyone would look to see what you were pointing at ? I finally did get used to mine on the RT .

Did many tests on my turn signals tonight while riding.... they turn off on their own after 20 seconds.... 2012 RT A&C model.

On my 2012 RT, the switch is not that bad. After reading all the reports before I purchased I thought it would be much worse then they are. Don't get me wrong they could be better I've had a couple of fights with the switch but very rare.

I would like to see a firmware update so we could set the delay, 20 seconds is quite a long time. Personally I would like to see 10 seconds, remember it only counts down while moving. My old Goldwing was really short I used to just flick the switch a few times it would reset the count. So on flick for short lane change, slowing down for an exit I would flick then a few seconds later flick it again.

But what each person likes or wants will be different, therefore it would be nice to be able to set it in the settings menu.

Off topic sorry, but on the firmware update subject, I would love to see that when you mute music while playing the iPod it also pauses the iPod and un pauses when you un mute.

That is brilliant!!

Making the timeout adjustable via the menu. I wouldn't think that would be overly hard to do. Besides lane changes, my problem is generally that I take some corners very slow and not tight as we're learning and I don't want to freak out my wife. On a busy"ish" road with a lot of businesses and side streets, 30 seconds pisses off ALOT of people not being able to know my intentions. 5-7 seconds would be sufficient for me even on the approach of a turn I am about to make.

I know the problem solely rests with me because my wife works it just fine. I'll have to have her pull some Patrick Swayze Ghost action on me and teach me the ways of the turn signal :joke:

It's 20 seconds... not 30.... and once you actually make a turn and then are straight... the blinker shuts off instantly.

No way is BRP going to give end-users control over that timing delay..... just isn't ever going to happen. This timing is most likely regulated by the NHTSA.
Not sure what the timing on my car is, but it will stay on for a certain amount of time also. In the olden days.. not that long ago... they didn't shut off on their own at all....

If you have a tight enough turn. There are some 4 lane intersections where I am turning on the outermost lane and it doesn't turn off until the 20 seconds has passed--or 3 minutes for me since I keep :cus:in' with mine trying to turn it off :D

Oh well, still love my spyder sensitive signal and all!

I posted this in the OTHER thread about the turn signals.
I bought my RT-S in late Feb 2010. After about 23,000 miles, I've noticed that I no longer play hokey-pokey with the turn signal. I'm not sure exactly when, but the center push to off position has worn in so that the turn signal goes off properly.

This problem must be more prevalent in the RTs. I have an RS and there is no problem turning the blinker off. Just tap the button. Once!
