There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Stuck in Reverse!

My new 2012 RTS SE5 has less than 400 miles on it and I'm having shifting problems already. I may have turned the key off after backing up, leaving the bike in Reverse. When I went to restart, I'm unable to shift back to N, therefore I can't start. I hope this isn't an omen of things to come! Any ideas? It was after 5pm so the dealer is closed

It's FREE !
I don't know why. Went out this AM, got on it, stepped on the brake, tried to shift to N but no go, hit the starter and it cranked, then shifted into N and started! Tempermental little bugger. Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions!

Yes

Sure wish it were that simple. I think I may have issues with the shifter, it doesn't seem to shift into gear fast, notable hesitation. Since I'm new to the bike I'm unsure of what normal is but being stuck in R can't be.

Put your foot on the brake and keep cranking and it will shift for you if you don't kill the battery.

Did you use the brake when trying to start the bike?

No Luck

I've tried putting the brake on, and tried with it off.... it doesn't matter. Maybe I'm not being clear... It won't crank as it's not in Neutral. The bike won't shift. The thumb shifter does nothing! The dash suggests that the bike is in R. I can however get off the bike and push it fairly easily, leading me to believe it may not actually be in gear. The bike won't crank since it's not in N, (or at least it doesn't think so) this is frustrating. :banghead:

I always leave my 2012 RTL in gear when I turn it off, even in reverse. For me to start the bike I turn the key on and let it go through its thing (diagnostic), press the mode button, check the kill switch, put my foot on the brake, then press the start button.

Had the same issue at SITA and did exactly what Lamont said, foot on brake when starting and it shifted automatically to neutral, didn't have to crank it either, it went right away.

kill switch

Check the kill switch. I have had that happen to me.

I try the kill switch, had that problem when we first got the spyder.
The kill switch (the red button, which I'm sure you know, but just in case, I didn't) was our problem like that, had to toggle it back, because if you accidently pushed it, it won't start & won't do anything...we just kept hitting buttons until we found that one since we had stopped & didn't know we had accidently hit it.

Question, on your shifting do you have the semi automatic shifter, if so, I know when I first started using ours I was holding the button in to long, just tap it. I just got mine in October, so was completely new to it & still learning.

OK am learning a lot here an i have had mine stuck in gear (R) (1) an it Didnt mater about the break an it would not turn over. i got a pair of vicegrips and a rag got under it clamped them to the shifter with the vicegrips an pulled or pushed it to shift it back to N so now i carry a pair with me all the times now. And i have had to do it a few times.

You don't need vise-grips. There is a 13 mm wrench in your toolkit, and instructions for using it in your manual.

It is a common misconception that a SE5 has to be in neutral to start. That is absolutely untrue!!!. A SE5 will not crank in gear unless the brake is pressed. Think about it it is a safety thing. BRP engineers want your butt in the seat and in full control when starting in gear. Immediately after starting it will shift itself to neutral. Even if it has trouble completing the shift the computer will blip the throttle (rev the engine) up to three times to boost the oil pressure to complete the shift.

Will not crank in gear.
1. Was the safety message acknowledged by pressing the mode button.
2. Is the kill switch in the on position.
3. Is your foot pressing down on the brake pedal. (Is the brake light on)

You're not alone. I went through all this before. All our member :spyder2:families guide us in their own way.

Serious, humorous, playful, ways of showing how we care for each other. I tried to memorize my owners

manual and help me out a lot and turn to this forum at the same time. Good luck and believe me the more

you ride the better it get.

OK, don't worry what gear it's in to start. Put the foot on the brake, hold it there and hit the starter button. This is all explained in the OWNER'S Manual, BTW.
