Strong GAS Smell After Ride

So, the wife just got home from SITR. Parks in the garage, and the smell of gas is so strong, I pulled it out to the driveway. This has been going on since the recall gas cap was put on. Prior to that, never had the smell.
Well, after reading about the fire in Bakersfield, I'm getting nervous. As mentioned, the smell is there after she shuts motor down. It matters not how much fuel is in the tank.
Any thoughts? Should I put the old gas cap on? where is it coming from. I;m about to take it to the shop unless somebody can make a suggestion.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Gordo

If the bike had been overfilled during a recent refueling; the smell of gas will remain for months...
I think that the overflow ends up in the evaporative canister.

yup

yup, me too.....
even with the new gas cap, i still get the 'gas smell'....
hmmmmm, maybe i did spill some when filling up... :doorag:

I must have been in the dark on this one. I always jam as much gas as I can in mine. Usually have gas ponded in the neck above the filler hole:dontknow:

I do not have a recall gas cap and I pulled my 2012 RTS SE5 into our garage from the barn---went on vacation and came back and the garage was filled with gas fumes--very strong so do not think the caps are the issues per say. Like you though this talk about fires and so forth is really frustrating and worrisome.

Gas smell

I have a 2012 RTS with 3200 mi on it when i drive it to work and come back home a 66 mi trip. I keep in the garage after 10 min the gas smell is bad in there , I have the new cap and it does not hekp the smell.

That's the way i always filled my 08, And never had a gas odor, and i did park in my garage.
That said, That doesn't mean others Aren't having a gas odor problem..

Iv'e said this many times over the years, [in my opinion]] Each Spyder is put together differently at the factory. Quality control starts at home... Or the lack of it....

I never filled mine till it clicks, usually a 1/2 gallon shy of full , never had boiling gas, never had a gas smell, and so I go about 15-20 miles less on a tank BUT thats just me!:dontknow:

I do not know if the pre 2013's have this but my 2013RT has a high pitched tone for 40 min after stopping. It is caused by the Throttle body being kept closed after shut down. I wonder if previous models have this and could possible explain the fumes? I have not noticed any yet. Only have 800mi on it so far do not know if that is relevant .

Thanks

The advise from all is appreciated. I guess the next step is to check the canister that was mentioned. My concern is the smell is there regardless of the amount of running time. 5 minutes or 5 hours. Oh yeah, and I am afraid of fire..
Hopefully we can all come up with a solution that works without having to call out the guys in the big red truck..

I don't think this is a problem as long as you ryde 15-20 miles after filling up. OTOH, if you only ryde a couple of miles before garaging it, you could end up with a lot of gas in your evap canister.

This happens as well in per 2013's. My 2012 does the same and never had a gas smell and it is parked in my basement. I never fill up to the top, always keep the nozzle down an inch or so and pull it out when the pump stops. Rather have a few less cups of gas, then the smell:dontknow:. JMHO.:thumbup:

Same here always leave some head room in the tank. If you get splash in the vents it is too full.

Please be aware and be careful . Who know what causes all this fires. Electric sparks when fan stays on after shut down plus gas fumes is a volatile combination. As a safety advocate during my 21 yrs plus US Navy career and found a lot of questions than answers in causes of fires. We lost few lives and airplanes on our aircraft carrier flight deck fires during our 88 and 89 westpac cruise. aviation fuel was part of this conflagration.

Had the same problem. Check under the spyder there a black overflow hose from the evap canister. Mine was so bad that there was drips of fuel coming out this hose. They changed the evap canister and problem disappeared. I still do get the smell of fuel after a long ride and usually when the tank is below half, but no drips coming out the hose, but occassionally can see whisps of fumes.

Ahh so that is what that hose is. I bet it has something to do with the gas fumes people who are having they need to reach under and touch it. It is on the right side center of panel on my 2013 RT.

I'm voting for the canister & operator error

What a resource! Just came onto the forum to find out why my new ST reeks of gasoline today in the garage after a morning ride. Has happened before, but not every time. I did fill up with gas before I arrived home, and I do fill it to the top until I see the first little splashback. I'm guessing it's a problem of my own making. Thanks for all the comments.
