• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

steering lock

Ok, I am new to this, but have a question. I recently bought a 09 RS SM5. I am having a blast riding my new spyder as they are truly a neat motorcycle. My question is when I turn my wheels to the left or right to try and lock the steering wheel I cannot get the key to turn to lock the wheels. Has anyone else had a similiar experience? This is a great site with lots of valuable information. Thanks

If the steering is ALL the way left or right, you should have no problem locking it, sometimes I have to hold mine in position as I lock it.

:agree: Hard left or right, then turn to lock. Do not push down on the key. You may have to hold it hard to lock as you turn the key, or wiggle the bars a tiny bit.

:agree:That's the way to lock it. But to tell you the truth i never lock it,
Just my own feeling mind you, but i think it might not unlock one day
nojoke Something about the locking mechanism i don't trust:dontknow:

I have tried holding hard to the left and right and even wiggling the key while trying to lock the handlebars, all to no avail. I would normally not worry about locking it, but in the seattle/tacoma area if it is not locked up to something some meth head will try to take it. I talked to the dealer and they said to bring it in, but expect to leave it there for several days. I am hoping that one of these days soon the weather will get better and I can ride more so I don't want to having it sitting there when I could be riding.

I've never been able to get mine to lock either.......and so I never lock it.

If theft is that much of a problem just get a heavy duty cable and hardened lock. Put that thru a wheel and part of the frame and it's not going anywhere.

Did you buy it new? If not are the handle bars stock? I believe Helibar or some other handlebar mod will cause you not to be able to lock them.

just to be clear . . . . .

. . . . . it takes wiggling the handlebars, not the key - - - if any wiggling is required.

I have never really looked at mine, but all my motorcycles are the same - there is a slot in the rod (or a collar on rod) that the handlebars rotate on. When the key is turned to the "lock" position, a bolt slides into the slot. Sometimes, the slot is not at the farthest point that you can turn the handlebars - or it is just off a little. The wiggling of the handlebars while you are turning the key to the lock position will help the bolt "find" the slot.

It's a very simple mechanism...basically a pin...your key puts it in and pulls it out...I usually lock the steering when I park...this is the only way to truly keep your bike from rolling around if some jerk wants to fiddle with it...if you keep the parking brake on and someone hits it, you're in trouble...if in first gear, someone can also knock that out...however, with the steering locked, you ain't gonna go too far no matter what...

HDX has no problem locking it but I can't figure it out so I just never lock it. Leave it in First and park it where I can see it and that's about it.

I've got a SE5 so I ALWAYS lock mine. If you park on a slope and some kid kicks the park brake.........

Thanks so much!! New here, and to the Spyder. Picked up my 2012 RT-S last week, could not get the steering lock to take until reading here.

Now. .!!

if all the above information has been read and tried it's time to look deeper. On the 2012 RS there is only a plate under the ignition switch. The pin simply protrudes not allowing the bars back. There is no hole you have to line up with. If the bars were raised along with the switch the pin will ride over the plate thus not stopping the return. If that is the case you need to add a trim piece to the plate for the pin to catch....:dontknow: Good luck..:gaah:
