Stalling.......

2014 RT Ltd 7,000 miles just started stalling out at times when stopping at light or stop sign when just restarted and still hot. Thought it might be a bad tank of gas, but have burned through 3 tanks since it began last week and it stalled about 5 times in a 150 ride yesterday. Any thoughts from my good Spyderlover friends out there???

Is it stalling at all from starting after warmed up? There was a service bulletin about stalling after the bike warmed up. This happened with my 2014 RT-S. You would stop at a gas station or whatever and turn the bike off. After starting the bike again and putting into gear it would stall. This would happen when putting into reverse or when putting into 1st gear. The fix was a software update.

Does it idle erratically before it dies? If so I'd run a can of Sea Foam or other good injector cleaner first.

I had a test Spyder that was doing the same thing. Krazykat does it restart in whatever gear you were in when it stalled? Like Mailand said my experience was when restarting the Spyder when it was warmed up, I would shift to either first or reverse and it would stall. When I would restart it it would be in gear - either first or reverse. This was addressed in a service bulletin very early in 14.

Thanks for your input. I will check with dealer about service bulletin. It does not stall when putting in first or reverse. It stalls only when I go forward and little bit and stop for a light or stop sign. This is after stopping (gas, drink, break, etc.), and re-starting after 10 - 20 minutes. Hopefully, just software update. Does not seem to be a problem when cold and has no symptoms when underway normally. Does not stall unless it is re-started when hot........

When did this software update come out, I had 3,000 mile service done last Aug and dealer did not mention it, still does this same thing after starting then putting into reverse especially after being run and stopping at the gas station or store, occasionally when going into first after starting. If it was after last Aug I need to ask my dealer about it.

Had this checked out at dealer today and they could find nothing wrong. Software update had been previously done so that leaves me wondering when I will have this problem again. Ride to and from dealer had no stalling today (Only 7 miles each way). Does not usually occur until well heated up. Monday's ride had it stall 25 to 30 times just returning from Ft. Myers to home (about 15 miles). This was after a much longer 50 mile ride for lunch.....

I think this problem was unique to the early 2014 RT's. I knew before taking to the dealer that the resolution to this issue was a software fix as other 2014 RT's had the same problem. I took my bike in for its 3,000 mile servicing at Central Florida Power Sports and they had not heard of this issue. They looked for service bulletins on their computer and yep they found the service bulletin for this problem. They did the software fix and everything great now. if you are not too far from a dealer take it in and get it fixed.

I am having a similar problem as you are. Stalling once in a while when warmed up. Getting ready to take my bike in for the first service. Will talk to them about this and the update that my bike may already have since I got it the first of Oct. Sorry about others having this problem but glad to know I am not the only one.

Let us know what your dealer has to say about this. I'm beginning the think maybe I got some bad gas because I went riding on Thursday and it stalled only once all day. Will keep track of this in future and won't gas up where I think it might have happened and see what happens......

Might help if someone could post the update number. My 14 RT did that a few times when I had less than 3k on it. Didn't do anything and it has not done it in the last 9-10K miles, so it must have grown out of it as the engine settled in....(keeping fingers crossed)

Got my first service done today on the 14 rt and even tho the records showed my bike had the service update done before I bought the bike the mechanic said he redid it and I should not have the stall problem in the future. Asked for the update number but for some reason nobody wanted to give it out. I would think that number would be online somewhere. The mechanic was very upbeat about the 1330 engine. I had heard good comments about this mechanic before I met him and was impressed with him. Looking forward to taking the bike back to him in 6,000 miles.

Got the trailer hitch installed as well. Looks great. Will try it out soon.

Very interesting that your tech re-installed that update. Please post again after you have a chance to determine if stalling has gone away. Mine is still stalling occasionally, but not anywhere near what it was doing a couple of weeks ago when I started this thread.

I was dealing with 2 different guys, the service writer out front who didn't appear very credible and later with the mechanic whom I was impressed with. I got the feeling that the update may not have been installed prior. Had this done yesterday and have another 250 miles on it already and no stalls or hesitations like I was having before. I would think that if you had gotten some bad fuel that you would be having other issues as well, like back fires and jerking. But then again if the problem goes away that could have been it. If the stalling reappears, I will mention it again.

When I mentioned it to the service writer after they had started working on the bike, he said well you should have mentioned that before when you made your appt. Later when I mentioned it to the mechanic, he simply said you won't have that problem again I did a couple of updates. He mentioned what they were but I didn't understand the terminology.

That's awesome. In my experience many service writers are not very knowledgable about the Spyder. The BRP trained mechanics usually know their stuff. Glad you got it fixed!

Thanks for the update. Mine has been pretty good lately. Too bad you are so far away - I would stop in at your dealer and speak to your tech......
