Squeaking sound on reversing - any ideas?

Hello

When I reverse, I hear a squeak sound; it's hard to localize the sound, but it comes from somewhere traction. I've changed the rear wheel bearings, but the sound didn't go away. Could it be possible that there is a fault in the drive shaft in the engine?

If I had to guess, I would say the drive belt is riding up on one of the pulley flanges. If this is the case, not a problem unless the belt is not running where it should going forward.

I can probably test it by lightly lubricating the edge of the drive belt and if the noise stops I can be satisfied

since 2008 all Spyders have had that squeak ..... there are a few remedies that can give short term relief............... :thumbup:

I dunno if I'd do that. Any lubrication will allow road grime and dirt to stick on the belt which may affect affect belt wear.

That was actually a recommended 'test & resolution' method for some belt noises on the earlier Spyders - IIRC, a small 'pea-sized' dab of silicone (?) based grease on the belt &/or sprocket edge in order to avoid the road grime issue... Don't just use any petroleum-based grease or WD40!!

There are at least a few threads on this buried in the depths of the Forum's older posts & threads if you go looking & can find them. :thumbup: And it did work to stop the squeaks too. hyea:

Thank you very much

I lubricated the inside of the belt lightly and now when I turn the wheel in reverse, there is no noise at all.
I'm writing from here in Finland and now even though winter is coming, it's promised to be sunny and over 10 °C warm for the rest of the week, so it's still quite good driving weather and when the "fault" is fixed you can safely go for a ride, thanks again.

Btw, 'XPS' is just BRP's 'own brand name' for all the re-branded stuff they get from other suppliers to on-sell at an inflated price.
So you really don't hafta go searching for that &/or buy ONLY their XPS branded stuff from their dealers! :lecturef_smilie:
Any similar synthetic grease should work, just so long as it meets or exceeds the OEM specs.
Same applies for everything else from BRP labelled XPS, including tires, unless your Country's laws say otherwise. :banghead:

I did this test and wiped the lubricant off the side of the belt after I had determined where the noise was coming from, so I don't think there is any danger to the belt.
The rubber toothed belt does not need any lubrication, only the adjustment that it runs correctly and, of course, the tension, which I measure with the GatesTension Gauge.

There is no danger or harm. The drive belt wanders quite a bit when turned in reverse. This can cause slight contact with a pulley flange causing an annoying, but completely harmless squeak. As long as tension and alignment are correct, there isn't any reason for concern.

My guess the belt is riding on the back sprocket going forward,
