• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

OUCH, sorry if it seemed that way, you have a really neat database setup, but most people on here would not be able to access the database to print it off and carry it with them on a trip, which is what we want them to do, i am just trying to make this a simple as possible so folks will be able to use it. Guarantee that no offense was intended, your database is simply ahead of a lot of our skills.

The neat thing about using php/sql is you can have buttons for just about anything. New entries could be added to the database by users but only changed/deleted by an admin. It could be printed by state or any way you like... it's just another button. The big advantage is you could open the url with your smart phone and press a few buttons and find someone local if you forgot to print a list. It would actually be simpler for the person when he enters some data... they just fill in the blanks and press the save button like any online form is filled out.

My food recipe database http://gnipsel.com/jtr/ is created so anyone can add a recipe but only an admin can edit or delete it IIRC. I use it at the store when I'm not prepared with a list so I didn't put any print function on there. The first page would be states, the second page would be cities and the third page a list of everyone in that city.

I took this on for one purpose, to update it, so it could be usable again, I have no experience using the database program that you have, BUT, if you are willing to set it up and take over this update i will happily stand back and let you (or any other competent person) run with it. It is not about me, it is about getting this done, please let me know if you have the time and desire to take on this project.:bowdown::bowdown:

HUH?!?! Shot down? I was liking the idea! As an IT guy, I'm all for it. Not a programmer by any means, but I am known to be a skillful tester and I take any beta testing to the extreme.

Like John mentioned beforehand, this would be a great tool even on a smartphone capability. I'll be watching this thread to see where it goes!

For the same reason as you I suggested the php/sql database to get-r-done and keep it from getting messed up. I feel the usability would increase with the format friendly to smart phones.

Once the pages are set up it would be simple to administer and I'm happy to do that. I can import the entries from the spreadsheet into the database so that would be an easy thing to do. It would take me a few days for sure to get it ready for prime time so to speak. I do my programming fun in the early am with a cup or two of joe.

I'll get started in the am on this.

Now that sounds like you have fun breaking programs :yikes:

Many years ago when I first started programming operator interface screens I would think that I had it all sorted out before I installed the screen on the production floor only to be very surprised at what buttons the operators would push. Then I'd go back and make the screens for the operators not the programmer!

Spyders To the Rescue -- Some Background

I'm happy to see someone try to rescue Spyders to the Rescue. It was started a couple of years ago, as I remember, by Deb Tangen. In about a week, there were over 100 persons offering assistance. I suggested to Deb that I would be happy to hand-code it into a .gpx file so that it could be added to our Garmin GPS units. She agreed and I started coding it.

But then, folks started to alphabetize various columns and add new responses. Within another week, it became impossible to ascertain whether I had all of the entries then in the db. I had made good progress on the coding so I released that code. The db was so screwed up by that time that I stopped coding and haven't looked at it since.

It made -- and still does -- sense to me to convert it into a .gpx file because then whenever I access it on my Garmin, the nearest persons would be displayed. This meant that I wouldn't have to carry it as an Excel file alphabetized on the state. Hand-coding isn't hard; it's just very picky and generally boring.

I suggest -- as others have -- that the file be checked for complete accuracy, be handled by one person so no-one can change it, and that it be offered in two forms: Excel and .gpx.

Ken

A quick look and the .gpx file is just an .xml file. What lat and lon did you use, the city center? The lat and lon could be part of the database and then a a query could pull the info out and a .gpx file created with php.

How did you add the .gpx file to your Garmin?
