Spyders in the Adirondacks, bike trouble

Arrived in Lake Placid on Thursday afternoon and picked up the welcome package. RogerB (another Maine rider and my hotel roommate) and I began to plan Fridays ride. We took off Friday morning on the 135 mile loop, picking up poker chips and enjoying the places along the way. As we were returning to Lake Placid area about 2pm the rain began so we ducked into the hotel for a break. I left around 4pm, in the rain, to get the 2 remaining poker chips from in town. After getting the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] chip I turned up the hill on Highway 86 and my 2009 SM would not climb the grade! It seemed it had jumped into neutral. I was starting to block traffic so I rolled back down a few feet to a parking space to try to see what happened…. Now the rest of the story!

The SpYder would not go into any gear and would roll as if in neutral when the key was off and in gear. I called RobertsSportsCenter for help. Talked to Kyle Roberts and he took my number and was going to call BRP for suggestions. A short time later Kyle called back and said it seemed the clutch was welded up. Neither he nor I could think of how it happened but we began the task of getting the SpYder repaired. He called back again and said he didn’t have parts but the sister store did and he was getting them brought down to his shop. The plan was to tow the SpYder to Saranac Saturday morning to get the clutch replaced. I walked to the 2 miles back to the hotel, again in the rain, to wait the next day.

About 7pm Friday night Don, also from the dealership, called and said he was on the way to get my SpYder that night! We talked about where and when and decided to meet in town at 8:30pm. RogerB loaned me his 2010 RT to make the trip to town. Don and I got the SpYder loaded and I said I would be at the dealership Saturday morning.

Saturday morning I called a taxi and arrived at RobertsSportsCenter at 9am. The cab was $60 from Lake Placid. Nancy welcomed me there and offered coffee and donuts as I waited the bad news. Kyle had been working on my SpYder since early that morning, came in and said he needed more parts from their sister store and could I go there. He offered the use of his 2011 GS and I was on the road again. The 2 hour ride was nice and I also had a chance to visit the other store. Again Nancy was welcomed me back and around noon time we all had chips, soda, burgers and dogs, courtesy of the store. Kyle finished replacing clutch about 2pm and I was back on the road. I had hoped to make it to the Casino to turn in my poker chips and see all the other SpYders but time was just not on my side. I returned to Maine to ride another day.

I would like to give Kyle Roberts and all the staff at RobertsSportsCenter a big thank you :clap:for all the help and super support provided during my trip to Lake Placid area. Thanks also to RogerB and Kyle for the use of their SpYders.:2thumbs:

Sorry to hear about your trouble but glad to hear there was a good dealer there to take care of you.

Never good to hear Ryders having trouble, but it's always nice to hear a good story about a dealer! Glad you're back on the road brother!! :D

:2thumbs::2thumbs: Three great dealer service stories in a row--

Now thats a trend I am liking a lot. :firstplace:

A dealer like that makes it easier to plan another rally in that area in the future.

Sorry that you had a problem with your bike but it's great to hear about truly good and caring dealers. This is the kind of experience that really makes motorcycling different than driving a car. It's the bad times that turn out well that provide stories to tell. Did I just rhyme?:gaah:

Glad that they got you taken care of. I was the one at the hotel with the orange/black RSS that was chatting with you.

Wow that's a great dealer experience.. One by one maybe they will learn what it takes to be great -- and therefore succeed...

My thanks to everyone who made comments and again to the folks at Roberts!

Good talking with you SpYder -Dude!

welded clutch

So what caused this "welded clutch" and how many miles on it when this happened?
