• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Spyder Won't Start

I wanted to go for a ryde Saturday and the Spyder would not start. The instrument cluster gave no indication that anything was wrong. I turned the key, hit the "M", pressed start and it was as if I had just turned the key on again. I only heard a click as if a relay had engaged. I went through the same procedure 4 times and gave up. I attempted the same Sunday with the same results. I don't think the battery is the problem but I really have no idea. If I do not release the parking brake, I get the warning beeps. Any ideas?

While you could have a bad relay, open the trunk and you'll see them. Pull and reseat them and try again. I'm guessing that won't work as it sounds like it's the battery.

Take off the tupperware on the left side of the Spyder and check the battery terminals for a tight connection, no corrosion and the battery for no leaking of fluids. If all looks well, try charging the battery or jump start it and try starting the Spyder again.

You didn't mention if you have an SM5 or SE5. I have an SE5 and I have to apply the brake in order to start mine (after pressing the Mode). If that does not work then I would check the fuses.

Thanks for the info

I ride an '09 SE5 with no electrical mods.
I'll look at the fuses and battery when I get home after work.
Thanks to you all for the input.

When you check the battery terminals, be sure to pull the Tupperware and check the actual terminals on the battery, not the remote jumper terminals under the seat. Another hint, when you urn on the key, you should hear the fuel pump run. If the terminals, fuses, and relays are OK, you may have another problem. There have been isolated instances of bad security (anti-theft) modules.

Yep, stepping on the brake did it for us too when we first got our :spyder2:. We were being cool cause folks at the eatery gathered round to see, low and behold we couldn't start. Had to call dealer and the service guy walked us through all the steps then asked "you have the SE5?", easy after that, lol.

brake when in gear

I had this behavior on my 09 SE5 until I learned to step on the right side brake when I was in gear. Seems like a reasonable safety "feature". If I am in neutral, no need to step on the brake.

Hearing a relay CLICK but no start is the giveaway here... if you don't press on the brake pedal in gear on an SE5 you don't hear that CLICK when pressing the starter button.

In my case this has happened twice - all is normal, all proper starting procedure, but just a CLICK - no starter... the first time, as part of my 'lost' troubleshooting procedures, I eventually opened the hood and pushed on the fuse box cover - VOILA, it started.

The second time, I pulled the fuse box cover and alll the relays were somewhat loose in their sockets. Pushing them all in remedied the problem.

Next time (if there is one) I'll push one relay at a time to determine which one is at fault. May not happen again, since I've added the foam block in the cover to keep pushing on them full time.
