• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Spyder Vs.....

What vehicle would you compare your Spyder to speed wise?

I also own a 2002 Trans Am. And I can easily say that my Spyder is much faster from 0-60. Even 0-100. Also it is signigicantly faster than a Yamaha V-Star 1100. To 100 mph anyways. After that the Spyder is definitly lacking. It is about neck and neck with the 02 Ironhorse with the 107 S&S engine. Faster than my dad's 1900 Yamaha Raider to around 70 mph, but my Spyder stands no chance against my brothers custom chopper.

Make sure you are differentiating between "quickness" and "speed".

quick does not equal fast in my book. The spyder is not a fast machine, topping out at 115 to 120 or so depending on your choice of shield.

It is quick off the line though... but there are many equal to it or quicker.

The large frontal area of the Spyder catches up to it at speed above 90 mph. Our 1000cc engine is spending most of it's power overcoming wind resistance at speeds over 100 mph and there isn't much left to push the Spyder any faster.

With an aweful coefficient of drag of .4 using a frontal area of 12 sq.ft. at 100mph the Calculated HP loss due to aero drag is:
32.0 horsepower.

nojoke

You need to add in tire friction and rotational friction at that point which is probably no more than about 6HP.

Then there's the transmission... and that darn belt...

Which means at 100, you're still accelerating! which you could be... but another 30mph or so and those numbers more than double.

Interesting tidbit... If you increase your peak power by 30% you might increase your top speed by 10%. But if you decrease your frontal area by 10% you increase your top speed by 10%. So start chopping off those mirrors and fenders, take off that giant windshield and tuck in tight and you can increase your top speed by more than adding a turbo!
:yikes:
You wanna go faster? Start doing the math! (or, you know, hire someone to do it...)

Biggest issue with the spyder is weight.
I've always wondered if there was a way to shed pounds off her (fenders, seat, lightweight wheels) and if that would make a difference.

I'm not sure why she weighs so much. Is it the frame that adds alot?

Weight affects acceleration far more than it does top speed. As was so aptly pointed out, it is drag, and especially wind resistance, that is the major hurdle to the top end. You can't turn anything with exposed suspension components into a bullet. nojoke

Dang, I'm impressed. I thought I was one of the few engineering geeks that own a spyder!! So nice to see there are more of us out there!

No... It's the Bacon Cheeseburgers! :roflblack:

:yikes: Do I read here where my RT may only go 115-120....I will put it up for sale tomorrow. I don't want no stinkin' machine that won't go 150 or so...

Let's see, my 2005 Titan pickup 4X4 will only go 90mph, so it has to go...Oh I forgot, it will pull my ranch trailer and Kubota tractor and I hardly know they are back there.

What the heck, I will live with 120!!
