• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Spyder on FIRE

I went on that website and just tried to post the links that I found but they wouldn't link up from here. All I saw was the one garage fire that was posted and then saw a bunch of stuff about the steering quitting and them some stuff on break fluid problems.

Hard to find my way around in there - very confusing to a simpleton like me! Oh yeah, a few complaints on installing the brp risers too. I was in defects, recalls and bulletins. Oh yeah, also shifting problems w/ the SEs.

Gramma and Gomkgm thank you for your posts I am glad no one was hurt, you are right things can be replaced People can't. I am also glad that you are going to keep riding. I know you will keep this in the back of your mind but it will fade. I once took a dump because of a brake malfunction (front brake froze at 65 MPH. I was not hurt bad but the memory of going head first over the handlebars kept cropping up for quit a long time. Off the subject I like your cup holder who's is it? Did it come with a mount?
Some day if I go south or you come north to Kansas maybe we can meet and ride.:doorag:

gramma;117060Was really upset at first when it happened. Then on the way home God had a "discussion" with me and reminded me that things are things said:
sorry this is what I meant to quote.:agree:

FYI the spyder that caught fire in Rockford Il had zero mods done to it. I don't recall if it was 08 or 09 but it was silver. The rider was driving through rock cut state park at a slow speed when it caught fire. I only saw the after pics and it was a total loss. Fire started in the engine compartment.

See this is your first post........welcome

not i nice story...good that no people where injured..but
i think they produced more than 14.000 spyders now - so if each of them has 1000 mls (i did 8000) ..we did 14 mio mls !!! together
so it does not look like a construction-failure..
e.g. last time in italy a guy from the petrolstation wanted to fill the maximum in my spyder..then i standing in a varnish of petrol
& another time they diddn`t fix the cup of my fuel-tank (the only time i smelled fuel..) - so i do that always bymyselve..
hopefully (for us users) it finds a explanation ..something not fastend ..open cables or so..
unlogically for my is why the fan stopes - if you switch off the engine !!
I think the motor will get hotter then before ..

I really do hope they can figure out was caused this fire. The M109R that I own had a fuel rail recall because it "might" cause a fire. After looking at my Spyder I can't think of what may have caused this but I'm sure the experts will be all over this and if there is a recall you can be sure you'll hear about it here.

I am glad nobody was burned or otherwise hurt other than the sick feeling you must have had when you saw it burning.

Never thought about this before, but automobile cooling fans do continue to run to shutoff temp, even after the switch is turned off.

Looks like it started below the fuel filter

The carbon canister is just below the fuel filter. This is also the area where my fire started, however, that fact alone does not provide evidence of a specific cause for the fire. There are several potential causes in that general area.

Hopefully, this fire will provide some answers. My Spyder was so totally destroyed that there was nothing left to inspect.

I thought about that awhile ago - in particular pertaining to those that have gone into limp mode from overheating. You're just supposed to pull over, turn it off and let it cool. Seems to me allowing the fan to run could help cool the radiator while you sit there.

Not trying to place blame on anyone or anything but I noticed you have the risers installed on your bike. Was there any mods done to the bike, such as electrical components or wiring of any sort??

Spyder fire???

I hate to be an alarmist but did I see pictures of another spyder fire?

It was a yellow spyder I saw the pics here fortunately it was not as bad as the other fires. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please inform me

I am gdmkgm's wife -- the one ON the yellow Spyder that caught fire at Dairy Queen in Texas !!!
1st) No, there was nothing draped over or hanging on the bike.
2nd) Someone mentioned a campground -- not. We had just pulled into the parking lot at Dairy Queen. As we were getting off the bikes, my granddaughter said -- gramma, your bike is smoking !! Downhill from there.
3rd) it was a manual shift -- 2008 (someone had asked)
4th) pics -- my husband is the one that knows how to do those things, and I will get him on it ASAP
5th) We think it started on the right side....hmmmm.

Update -- he is taking the Spyder to the dealer we now use as I type this. The insurance adjuster is going to meet him there. They will both confer with the technician (mechanic???) to decide whether to total or if it is fixable.

I asked hubby to make sure to ask the dealer if they think BRP should be responsible for this rather than our own personal ins co. If not, at least BRP will be aware of this 2nd or 3rd fire.

Yes, I DO think something is wrong with the engineering. Even if it is (as one poster inferred when his dealer delayed giving back his Sypder until it was safe to drive) a fuel fitting that cracked or otherwise was ineffective, it is something that EVERY Spyder Ryder needs to know about to be aware of.

YES, I WILL get back on, YES, I WILL ryde again with all the enthusiasm I had before this, just with a little more knowledge and a lot more caution -- not bad things at all.

Was really upset at first when it happened. Then on the way home God had a "discussion" with me and reminded me that things are things, and it's all about people and our relationships with each other. I am blessed in so may ways.

Keep up the Ryding !!!!!:ohyea:
Thank you very much for all the information you have posted. I appreciate all the details you included, the pictures, and the fact that you informed us so quickly. I can now watch more carefully on my own Spyder. I am hoping that, since you were able to put the fire out quickly, a cause can be found and if any corrections that are needed they can be made. We are all safer because of your information. Thanks again.

spyder on fire

when i arrive home from a ride, i usually notice gas fumes from the spyder
the only mods i have done engine wise is to remove the inlet rubber tubes from the air box, installed an evoluzione air filter, and an mbrp exhaust.
after i read about the 2 spyder fires i wonder if the two spyder owners were smeling gas fumes for a awhile before the fires.
my spyder only has about 3000mi on it. when i take it in for the recalls i
will have them check that too, it could simple as a bad gas cap.

My new manual fan switch is powered by Ken's power bus, which is also active when the ignition switch is in the auxiliary position (counter-clockwise). This allows me to turn off the ignition, but to keep the fan running, if I choose to do so. I am running a direct line to the fan motor, bypassing the fan relay.

Correction

My new manual fan switch is powered by Ken's power bus, which is also active when the ignition switch is in the auxiliary position (counter-clockwise). This allows me to turn off the ignition, but to keep the fan running, if I choose to do so. I am running a direct line to the fan motor, bypassing the fan relay.

I was wrong about the power bus being active in the auxiliary position. The time delay faked me out on this. My new fan switch only runs when the ignition is on. Of course, I can turn off the ignition and then turn it on again without starting the engine. This alternative is not ideal. I will have to give this some thought.
