• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Again, THANK YOU Scotty for saying it so nicely. I often wonder why this great group of spyder lovers can be so cruel with their words.

Thanks for posting those--- I believe ya anyway!

Really did a number!

Two things seem pretty obvious to me...... The fire started inside of the Spyder--- not from outside---- and that there was an accelerant (gas) helping things along.

I think they should be able to find the source-- due to your smart thinking and getting the fire under control.

On a positive side - the tank protection seemed to work well!

Had you recently gassed her up?

Ever had any gas smell like others have reported?

Just checked the NHTSA database - only 1 Spyder(2008 model) fire has been filed as a complaint (the one pushed out of the garage). No filings on any 2009 Spyders for anything.

Their filing system is a bit goofy to use - and the search is a bit goofy too - but once you get to the right area you can find out about all complaints and actual recalls. Spyder has had 2 ---- brakes and steering.

I'm going to that website after dinner

I am gdmkgm's wife -- the one ON the yellow Spyder that caught fire at Dairy Queen in Texas !!!
1st) No, there was nothing draped over or hanging on the bike.
2nd) Someone mentioned a campground -- not. We had just pulled into the parking lot at Dairy Queen. As we were getting off the bikes, my granddaughter said -- gramma, your bike is smoking !! Downhill from there.
3rd) it was a manual shift -- 2008 (someone had asked)
4th) pics -- my husband is the one that knows how to do those things, and I will get him on it ASAP
5th) We think it started on the right side....hmmmm.

Update -- he is taking the Spyder to the dealer we now use as I type this. The insurance adjuster is going to meet him there. They will both confer with the technician (mechanic???) to decide whether to total or if it is fixable.

I asked hubby to make sure to ask the dealer if they think BRP should be responsible for this rather than our own personal ins co. If not, at least BRP will be aware of this 2nd or 3rd fire.

Yes, I DO think something is wrong with the engineering. Even if it is (as one poster inferred when his dealer delayed giving back his Sypder until it was safe to drive) a fuel fitting that cracked or otherwise was ineffective, it is something that EVERY Spyder Ryder needs to know about to be aware of.

YES, I WILL get back on, YES, I WILL ryde again with all the enthusiasm I had before this, just with a little more knowledge and a lot more caution -- not bad things at all.

Was really upset at first when it happened. Then on the way home God had a "discussion" with me and reminded me that things are things, and it's all about people and our relationships with each other. I am blessed in so may ways.

Keep up the Ryding !!!!!:ohyea:

Thanks Gramma for your post! I am so glad you're gonna keep ryding! And yep - the Big Man Upstairs always has his hand in it and that's all that matters.:2thumbs:

Keep us posted on everything - I am very glad nobody got hurt and I'm really curious as to what is going on w/ these :spyder:.

You know, it strikes me that some folks here are being awfully rough on a nice woman who not only had the terrible misfortune of losing her Spyder to a fire, and the scare of the possibility of having a grandchild injured in the incident, but was kind enough to come on here and provide some additional details in response to your questions and comments. I, for one, also appreciated her SpyderLover husband reporting the problem to us in the first place, and I certainly appreciated her additional response. Demanding confirmation in the form of photos is self-serving and insulting. Asking for them nicely would have been much better...and a lot friendlier. You catch more flies with honey......

For the record: Thank you Gdmkgm for reporting the incident on this forum so we could be aware, and discuss it. Thank you Gramma for following up, filling in some further details, and politely responding. I am so happy you and your grandchild were not injured, and I am sorry for the loss of your Spyder. I am also pleased at the way this is being handled. This was the first time a fire has been put out quickly enough to make it possible to see the area of origin, and at least investigate possible causes. In truth, the cause may never be known. Taking it to the dealer for the insurance man and tech to look over together is a real good start, though. As to pictures, I would document everything you can for your own use and records. If you wish to post them here for us to ponder, so be it, but I wouldn't blame you if you did not. Glad to hear you will be back on a Spyder as soon as you can. You are a true SpyderLover!

Yup - pics would be nice but the whole main thing is she didn't get hurt, her grandchild didn't get hurt and YES it was great they posted about this!:agree:

I wonder if it was oil dumping out of the airbox onto the exhaust that started it. ?
I know it has happened to me twice now, without the fires of course... Just a smoke show..

OK, I apologize for my engineer comment but I think people have been rough. And if it were YOUR :spyder: I don't think any of you would be too pleased having some burnt up hunk of metal and plastic and then going through all the b.s. trying to right the situation.... just my two cents. Sorry if I made anyone mad. I gotta lay off the wine geez!!!!!!!!! No more posting for me until after happy hour and dinner!

Thanks for posting the pictures. They got my attention! When you see a charred gas cap, it can make you weak in the knees. Very fast action with that fire extinguisher...nice job! I wouldn't venture to speculate as to cause, but seeing the fuel filter right in the center of the localized carnage certainly does raise some flags. I intend to inspect this area much more closely from here on out during maintenance inspections. I may even put some fire sleeving material over the fuel lines in that area, just for luck. This one is no laughing matter.
