• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Spyder on FIRE

During a ride on the 4th , we had just pulled into the DQ in Overton Tx. to get a drink when my granddaugher on the back with me said that there was smoke coming from her grandmothers Spyder, at first I thought she had went through some water and it was steam, buit the it turned black and I saw flames in the side holes, got a extingisher from the DQ and put it out, but it still burned under the panels for several minates, don't know the extent on the damage yet waiting for the insurance co., but just looking through the panels it looks pretty bad.
Has anyone heard of this happening before? I just thankful that we were pulling in to a parking lot and not on the hiway.

Ouch! Second fire story. That is disturbing! At least you saved this one so the cause might be able to be determined. Please keep us informed. You should probably report this incident to the NHTSA, too.

Most important is you all are OK!!
The spyder can be fixed or at worst replaced!

There has been at least one other post about a fire, but dont remember details.

Thankfull all are safe!!

I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE CAUSE!

I hope the cause can be determined soon and other spyder tested for problems.

Was it a SE5 or SM5, 2008 or 2009 model?

Keep us posted.

This is disturbing! It's the second Spyder fire to start after stopping from a ride. I hope you report this to BRP as well as NHTSA. This needs to be taken seriously and looked into. Where did you first notice the fire? The other rider mentioned that the fire started on the right side of the Spyder. I'm glad noone was hurt and you got it out quickly! Please keep us posted on what you find out.

That is very troubling. Glad to hear all are ok. Hope this is not chronic to the spyder.

Please, Please, Please make sure and report this to :

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

The other Spyder fire was not reported as far as I know - the owner never file the reports or got the answers - they just took his Spyder away and wrote a check.

It took about 14 reports on the steering issue filed by many of us in order to a recall and a fix. This fire issue is a major concern.

Something is wrong here folks - and we don't need another Pinto on our hands!

+10000000 to this. If you have any questions about reporting it to the NHTSA just ask here. I'm sure there are people here who would help you out through the process.

This is VERY disconcerting that a second Spyder has caught fire. I know I dilly dally taking my gear off and wiping the Spyder down now before I leave it in the storage building that is away from our house. But what if this happened as you shut the Spyder off to get gas? It would not be good AT ALL!!!!

I sincerely hope that the cause can be found and documented. I'm also very glad that no one was injured and there was no major loss of property due to this fire. The bottom line is that a Spyder is just a machine that can be fixed or replaced. People getting hurt is a whole other matter.

I certainly hope everybody is OK. You can replace a vehicle.

WOW...what reaction to an incident. It's almost like the various posters want there to be two things that happen right now.

1) NHTSA stops all sales
2) This vehicle becomes worthless because of an incident where the operator could be 100% responsible.

Remember, a Senator's niece was swimming and became stuck on the drain and was disembowled by the suction of the pump. 10's of millions of swimming pools out there, and one fatality and now all pools must have secondary pumping systems to prevent this from happening again, yet it had never happened before.

Remember when 60 Minutes ran the story about how Jeeps can turn over. Completely bogus report, but killed the sales of Jeeps for a long time.

The internet can be used to absolutely kill a completely viable product by those with alternate agendas.

Let's relax. No reason for congressional investigation. Calm down, please.

Chronic??, it's no where near "chronic"
"Something is wrong here folks"...why? Alarmist by nature?
"The Pinto"? Every single one was defective...and they stopped product, and sales died....are you sure you want to talk about the pinto because of a fire was reported by a poster?
"Fuel line cracking or splitting"? Where did that come from?

I don't know about you, but before I sell this extremely dangerous ball of potential fire, I'd like to see that the incident is real, and that it was an engineering flaw.

Please, remain calm.

:agree:

What's the :spyder: population to date? About 9,000?

TWO incidents doesn't call for the most severe action: 2/9000 = .000222 ... GEEZ.

Let's see what type of root cause analysis is done first before jumping to conclusions. I'm confident the engineers at BRP are all over this.

Seems like everybody was calm, until you blew a gasket. Nobody called for Spyders to be removed from the road, sales to be stopped, calling 60 Minutes, or a congressional investigation. Nobody mentioned anything like that...except you. What we said was serious incidents of this nature should be reported to the NHTSA. They do not respond in a knee jerk fashion, but if the reports are of a serious nature, or there are numerous reports, they will contact the manufacturer and investigate the problems in a proper manner. Also, it is difficult to see how a rider could "be 100% responsible" for something that happened inside the bodywork panels, I might add. Throw your rocks somewhere else. I don't know if you have ever experienced a fire on a motorcycle, but I have. Scary experience, with fire beneath the gas tank...that is sitting between your legs. Even if you were off the machine, as this rider fortunately was, the thought is certainly disturbing. I will give you the fact that two spontaneous combustion incidents do not add up to "chronic", but people have a right to experess their concern, and I think it was expressed very appropriatly here today.

anti insurance

I'm a big fan of "insurance is legalized mafia scamming" and therefore obtain the bare minimum mandated by the mafia/congress. Therefore, if spyders spontaneously combust, my bare coverage won't cover and I will be a most unhappy camper if my title ends up being for a heap of ashes. One more spontaneous combustion and I will have to put my spder up for adoption! I sure hope they can identify the issue before mine burns up or gets adopted out. Thanks for the updates my spyder family!

:agree: We don't know what happened...maybe the person had a jacket resting on the back of the bike and some part of it melted and caught fire...there are so many factors...

I don't think there is an issue with 2 fires and over 10k bikes...each incident must be evaluated and if a pattern exists, then a correction is in order...2 bikes does not make a pattern...

Nancystoy, you seem to be a logical person.

"Something is wrong here folks". She's right, and it has nothing to do with this particular incident.
