Spyder Laser alignment explained in video

I did this video explaining the process of aligning the Spyder with the laser alignment tool. I forgot to add that you need to check BUDS after you're done and make sure that the steering angle sensor and torque sensor is set to zero when you're done. Boring stuff for the gals and some guys but the gearheads will like it. :doorag:

Thank you Lamont, I am going back to Blackmans on Tuesday to have my bike realigned. You answered some of my posts the other day and Baja Ron's thread. I am the one that has 18 weights on my front left tire. After Blackmans did my alignment last Friday my handlebar is slightly cock to the left and my turn signal will not cancel on it's own so I'm going back to them to have a readjusted. I would love for them to see this video because they have not done very many alignments at their dealership. THANKS AGAIN

Just got it done by Mike from Sunray Tx in San Antonio. No unusual wear on tires in 23 k mi but he pointed out it was 1.25" one wheel & .25" other one.

Just wondering if these people that are doing the alignments have the BUDS systems. If so are they dealers? If not how did they get the BUDS program to reset everything.

I'm brand new to Spyders so I'd like to know how one can tell if their vehicle needs to have a laser alignment done. I just got a 2014 RT Limited that was a "demo" with 300 miles on it. So far, it seems to ride pretty nicely. How far off are factory alignment settings from laser perfection? I presume one of the major benefits would be increasing one's chances for extended tire wear. Finally, is this an expensive procedure? Will my local dealer (who I see is authorized to do this) roll their eyes if I ask for it? I apologize for sounding like a rookie. Thanks.

The rear wheel is not fixed in the swingarm, so when it is removed and replaced it is quite common for it to not be in the exact same position as when it was aligned. When I set up to align a spyder I set the forward and aft targets 150" apart, then adjust so that the laser hits the front target 1/4" inboard of square on each side, a total of 1" toe-in total. So even a difference in putting the wheel back on will make a difference.

There are some ways to minimize the amount of change. There is a video on the forum showing how to remove and replace the rear without fiddling with the adjusters. I had my rear off a few times, both by a dealer and by myself, and have noted a slight difference in the alignment each time. Probably wouldn't be enough for the average rider to note the difference. The easiest way to check is to find a flat piece of road and check to see if the byke pulls in either direction.

Just an FYI, I've done a quite a few more alignments since this post and have refined the proceedure quite a bit. This is still a good idea of how it's done but not how I do it now exactly. I perfected it on my Spyder and a few others.
