• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Sporadically unable to shift from 1st to 2nd. 2012 RSS SE5

Morning SL!

I spent about 30 minutes looking through some of my search results on SL regarding my issue. I was unable to locate a similar thread.

The past few rides out I've had issues shifting from 1st to 2nd. It's un-nerving as I've experienced this while amongst accelerating traffic.

I expect this is an OIL issue? Sadly, I am not very handy when it comes to servicing my RSS. Should I take it in and have them check out the levels?

Is that what you all expect this to be?

Sorry again, I usually find what I am looking for via the search tool.

Thx
Derek

Give us some more info to better help you

Like how many miles since your last oil change and have you ever checked the oil level yourself?

Some Spyders use more oil than others, but its easy to need a 1/4 quart inbetween changes, so its important for you to learn how to at least check the oil level and know how to properly top off your oil level. Its not hard to do, and is detailed in your Owners Manual. Most important thing to remember tho, is to check the level AFTER you've gone for a nice 20-30 minute ryde, putting the machine thru all its paces and gears so that the ENGINE is warmed up and at FULL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. Many ppl aren't used to this routine and check the level while not properly warmed up, giving them a low reading so they add oil, and then end up over-filling it and then getting oil in the air-box from the blow-by.

Low oil level could be one possible reason, but there can be others as well. So the more info you can give us about the issue your having, the better we can arm-chair help to diagnose your problem ;)

Thanks for the reply.

My last servicing was about 2,000KM ago and I'm sad to say I've not checked the oil levels myself.
I'll read over that section of the manual and check the levels once I've ridden it hard (as long as it shifts.... :< )

Thx

I don't mean to be rude, but if you are unable to check your ol level, you shouldn't be riding or driving any vehicle, including a Spyder. By all means go in to the dealer and have them check the level. While you are there, have them show you exactly how it is done. This is something you really do have to learn...just like traffic signals, steering, and other driving procedures and skills. :D

BTW, the failure to shift could merely be that your rpm is too low. The Spyder will hesitate to shift below a certain point.

Takes a few minutes..!!

This is a must on these roadsters. They are high rpm motors and oil consumption is common and causes many problems when low. Especially with the semi-automatic. Take some time to learn or find those that can help you out. Check it about every 750 km's...good luck....:ohyea:

Derek,
:agree: This is a bit like mowing the lawn and bathing ; it's GOT to be done...
Have your dealer show you how if you can't make sense of the instructions in the manual.
Please let us know how the learning process goes; good luck!

Thx! I will most definitely learn to do this moving forward. I have Very poor lighting in the building parking I am in and my family members all live in Condos. (No Driveway/Garage to work in)

Regarding RPM's. I shift above 6K nearly 100% of the time.

Nancystoy: I am fully able to check my oil levels, however I've not felt the need to do this since I've had my Spyder. I've been basically 100% good-to-go via my scheduled servicing.
Only the past few days have I experienced this issue.

I wish my local dealer had a Maintenance day focusing on Can-Am Spyders. They have a Maintenance day in which they focus on cruisers, not very helpful.

Thx for the help ppl!

Have a fantastic day.

Additionally, can someone provide a Video link detailing how to change the Oil on the RSS?
I've seen a variety of Video's that address RT oil changes and panel removal.

(the PiratePowerSports video on Youtube is very poor)

I just want to review it while at work so I have a solid understanding of the process. (via a video. The user Manual is great, but I want to see the process)

Thx

Suggestion

Derek

Suggest to your dealer a good way to build customer loyalty would be to have a "Customer DIY Day" oriented around rider maintenance subjects. It would help his sales and rider education.

Also don't misinterpret any comments posted they are all meant to be constructive criticism's.

:agree: Good Idea, Bob! A Spyder DIY day could be a pretty easy sell...
And Derek; it is all meant to be constructive...;)

I appreciate all the assistance I get from the members here. If not for the Spyderlovers site and it's members, I would not have ever bought my Spyder and I LOVE IT!

:>

I've since sent my dealership an email requesting just that. Or if I can sit in on the change so I can do it moving forward!

Thx again

Checked the oil after a brisk ride. My initial pull of the dipstick was dry. Wiped for the hell of it and reinserted, pulled and completely dry once again.

Put 1/2 Qrt of oil in and have yet to experience any issues.

I rode it hard today for a few hours and had no shifting issues at all.

Thanks again!

I'll be sure to continue to work towards being more hands on.
