• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

splitting the dash top to install ram mount

so...several threads have stated that "you can simply remove the two screws and split the dash halves far enough to install the ram mount scrws are out...halves dont budge :(("......really???

I like it ...now...how to I move the harness and cradle from its original location..I have the cradle unbolted...but where are the ends so I can disconnect it and re-route it...OR is there simply enough slack somewhere to pull the extra length to reach the dash mount???
Trying to pull off this mod before the Redwoods event (12 days!!)

Whats wrong with the BRP mount Mike. I like mine. I believe you already have it, do you not.

Leaving for Spyders In The Redwoods Aug. 1st.

I agree!!!! The JT mount is definitely the way to go! I used it. I, however did remove the windshield and split the dash to cleanly run the withers up to and to the back edge. I used a dremel to make the wire hole. To do it easily, you need to remove more than two screws - but I love tearing things apart!

The BRP mount seems to work okay...
But you are taking your eyes further away from the road, and the ZUMO seems prone to serious glare issues down there.

Jack...the Zumo works fine,,,but Im a big guy...and its really hard to see where it is...even with a shade...and its takes my eyes off the road for too long...I like the JT mount...just gotta some hints on how to re rout the OEM cable

Well I guess I would have to second that Bob. My 665 just decides to shut down on occasion. Will have to check with Garmin. It may be just overheating down here in AZ. Will do that after I get the SMH10 Senna head set mount back that went south.

Some one on this forum said there is an update for the Garmin.

If my senior memory serves me right …. I bought this so I could leave the OEM set up installed on the bike. I used the JT mount with a 1 inch ball. I used a RAM extension arm that is about 6 inches to bring the GPS unit right to the rear edge of the top dash. (I also used a tiny piece of Velcro between the GPS unit bottom and top of the dash. This stopped the tiny bit of vibration of the unit itself.) I removed the windscreen & all the attachment screws holding the dash halves together (there are some hidden ones at lower front!) I dremeled a notch where the wires went between the rear edge of halves, ran the new wires along side of the OEM stuff and zip tied it all together. Next I unplugged the OEM harness and reconnected the new one exactly the same way. Last, I used positaps and connected the red & black power wires to the OEM wires. Good to GO!

About to do this.. Been looking for pics of how folks routed the wires, how clean it can be ran. Would you happen to have any pics of your routing?

While I agree and use the mount, to answer your question, to split the dash safety there is a bit more to it. you need to remove the following:
  1. remove the mirrors (they pop off)
  2. remove the wind deflector just below the mirrors (two black screws)
  3. remove the two access panels on either side of the frunk when open (they also pop off, start at the wheel well and pop the pins out of the grommets, then pull the bottom out on the drives side and final unhook the panel at the top.
  4. remove the pop off panels on either side
  5. Remove the two upper side panels (do not remove the screws that you see on the outside, these are for the locator pins that snap into the oval rubber grommets under neigth, when the 4 black screws are removed just wiggle the panel and it will pop off.
  6. Remove the head light bezel (4 screws)
  7. remove the two chrome plastic windshield screw covers
  8. remove the windshield (4 black screws)
  9. remove the windshield bracket (3 clips or stainless screws depending on the year of the bike)
  10. remove two upper wind deflectors (2 black screws)
  11. remove three bolts along the bottom of the dash panel
  12. remove the 2 stainless bolts in the middle of the panel
  13. push the panel half forward and then work it over the windshield mounting bracket support arms
While the list is long, the actual time to do this is less than 20 minutes for me by myself. If this is the first time then take it slower and make sure to keep the screws organized, I use a tray with 18 bins but some use baggies or the likes. You cannot break anything, just follow the steps above.
