Speeding in Texas

Texas has some of the highest speed limits in the nation and there is always someone to test them.
Of the top 20 clocked by the Texas Highway Patrol in 2017, 13 were by motorcyclist on crotch rockets
starting at 139 mph and the top honor by a motorcyclist at 181 mph. The balance were filled out by
Corvettes, BMW's, SRT's and one SS Chevy.

That is just a little too fast for this old boy! Got to wonder if these speed demons just pulled over to the side of
the road when the red/blue lights started flashing and said Hi Officer??
Oh well, each to his own.

Texas is an interesting place. They post their highest speed limits on their junkiest roads.
It's like a torture test or something. If you find a reasonably smooth patch of highway somewhere,
then it will be a construction zone or something to slow you down.

A few years ago I was driving from El Paso to San Antonio on I-10 in a VW Passat turbo cruising just over the speed limit (really) when a bright red Ferrari blew past moving at about warp 10. Not too many miles later he was stopped at the side of the road with a highway patrolmen issuing what I assume was a costly speeding ticket.

That should have resulted in a bit of restraint but the same person was stopped and ticketed two more times within roughly 100 miles.
I gathered he didn't realize his cloaking device wasn't working properly. Or, he was simply a complete horse's a$$.

On reflection, my first question should have been where did the cops come from? There's absolutely nothing to hide behind along I-10 for very long distances. :dontknow:

Or did the guy in the Ferrari catch up with them & just blow on by?? That might be what happened, especially if you consider the likelihood of the 'Or, he was simply a complete horse's a$$' scenario!! :lecturef_smilie:

When he got home that night, did it go something like this.... "Dang it, I got stopped & ticketed 3 times today! Every time I passed a bloody cop car, they up & booked me!! For no real reason either.... I'd just blow on by, and as soon as I did, they'd put their lights & siren on?!? :dontknow: Go figure?!?" :banghead: :banghead:

I always say God Bless Texas and their high speed limits. Two lane roads with 75 mph speed limits is nearly heaven for me.

I think the fastest I have not gone in my car was 125... someone on the road was doing a bunch of stupid dangerous stuff and my wife told me to just get away from them... who am I to say no to the wife...;-) it was just us 2 cars, so noone else around and wide open visible interstate. The CTSV didn't even feel like it was working. Really handles like a dream even at that speed. But then again it is built for it.

I drove 12 hours to get one of the first CTS in 03. Of course I had to have the manual transmission, it was a fun car except in the snow so I sold it in 05 for an all wheel drive Mercedes. I’m sure the V is even more fun.

I used to like Oklahoma, they used to have signs that were a list of the fines for x number of miles over the limit, so you could drive as fast as you could afford. I think they've taken all those signs down now though.

Texas 130 Toll Road

If you ever get to ryde to Austin, it is fun to run a new toll road: 130. It was made to bypass I-35 and Austin downtown traffic. Goes from Georgetown down to San Antonio.

It could be the finest road built in the USA. 85MPH, wide banked curves, and goes right next to the Circuit of the Americas Formula One racetrack.

I've ridden my Spyder on it many times. You can get to over 100mph before you even realize it!

Oh yeah, and they're not limited access roads either. On some portions of the Texas Interstate network the speed limit is posted as 85. That means you'll regularly be passed by almost anything and everything short of an old lady with a walker!

Several years ago a new segment of a toll road in the vicinity of Austin was opened and we were all invited to try it free of charge for a weekend. Speed limit was - and still is - 85, and the only minor, insignificant concern along that stretch of road was (and is) roughly 25,000 feral pigs who seem to believe that chunk of Texas is theirs. First weekend resulted in a bunch of spectacular vehicle/pig incidents, although neither species seems to have learned anything.

Oh yes. Been there and done that aboard my Spyder and it is very easy to become a bit too exuberant without realizing it. Last time happened to be returning from Dallas on the final day of the Moto GP (I had no idea) and as the massive crowd left COTA I found myself to be the slowest vehicle on the road - at 85+ a bit. You would have thought I was dragging an anchor! Still, I arrived home without a ticket. :clap:

I too, was down in Austin for MotoGP. Though 2 up with the missus I didn't exceed 90 on the toll road.

Fastest I've gone was 110 (car, still had some left in it), 130 (bike, ran out of balls to keep it pinned). Well into ticket me now territory.

I drive that I-35 corridor 2 or 3 times a year going back to Missouri for visits. Now, when 130 also bypasses San Antonio, I think I'll get real interested! But not for the 85mph; I think my old Buick's tires are happier somewhat below 80. And Momma!

If there was such a bypass around Dallas-Ft. Worth, I'd be interested right now! :banghead:
