• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

"Spares" for Route 66 trip

Some of you may have noticed that BMW Gene and I are going to make a Route 66 trip from MO to CA and return via the northern route.

Question: What do you recommend we bring as spare parts/equipment? I have the dealer list in my Garmin in case we need advanced help.
 
We made our trip with no spares. Changed a rear tire in MA and 2 tail light bulbs in Seattle. Just lucky I guess.
 
I made the trip with no spares. Get an oil change at one end or the other. If it breaks down call AAA or AA as your need exists.
 
I can tell you what Lamont does....He has me come along and I get to ride the "Parts Bike"! :yikes:

Fortunately for me, he doesn't break down. Haven't really discussed what happens then.... :dontknow:

:agree: Also, make sure to get your brakes checked when the oil is changed.
 
During our 6200 mile trip we took no spare parts with us. We did the necessary fluid and filter changes before hand and had any service we needed done or was close to being due. We added Ride-On to the Spyder tires and to the trailer tires and had the rear tire changed out (we were at 15K on the original tire at the time). Just take any tools that you anticipate you may need along the way, as well as a spare relay, and spare fuses (those came in handy for us as we blew two fuses). We also took some extra bearing grease, a grease gun, and spare bearings for the trailer as well as a quart of oil and some coolant for the Spyder.

Thanks, Luv. I'm set for tools and have both BEST and AAA if it's anything serious. Planned to take spare fuses and relays. Also looking at a trailer. The Ride-On is a good idea...haven't used it so far but for this trip, it's probably worth it. Only have 7K on the tires so I should be okay.

That's a nice trailer. We pulled a PiggyBacker, worked great. We had everything we needed and then some. We averaged 29MPG riding two-up pulling a trailer loaded down. Can't complain. :)

Sounds like you're on the right track. Have fun, I can't wait to see pictures. We had so much fun on our trip. :clap:

Piggy Backer looks even better. Was looking for something inexpensive. A savings of $900 is my kind of deal!!

The PiggyBacker is good for the price. And it comes with a trailer stand and the cooler tounge rack which comes in handy for carrying extra fuel and a cooler. The lock on it sucks, but we came up with a $15 solution to that. The company in SC that sells them are good people and will help you with the build. Took us about 3 hours to put it all together and it pulled really nice.

Get a Hoppy Converter for your wiring and you're good to go. The company will sell you the converter that you need, just ask for it. :2thumbs:

I made part of Rt 66 this year and the only thing I took was a gallon of fuel. It came in real handy on my trip back through west Texas. There's a long stretch of nothing with no gas stations. It was the first time I arrived at a gas station with my fuel light on for about an hour and no bars on the fuel gauge.
 
I did US 50 CA to MD, then Rt 66 from IL to CA.

took no spare anything. Never ran out of gas and had no problems the whole trip.

got service before I left and again when I arrived back East. New tires are 14000.

Only luggage was T-bag on the trip East; then I sprung for the BRP Givi bags for the trip west -- needed a bit more room to hold the souvenirs.

Its all a great ride! I was a little in a hurry on the way home, so I'd like to do the whole thing again....

Only thing might add to that is spare fuel. I needed it twice now on my trips out west. nojoke
 
May I also suggest you take US-50 and I-70 back east... I-80 is boring and there are a lot more trucks. Also Glenwood Canyon near Denver is BEAUTIFUL as is Arches National Park in Utah. Just a thought. :)

Googled the route. Don't want to miss Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. So, going to go from Cheyenne WY to Denver...then I-70 east.

Thanks a BUNCH for the suggestion. Always good when someone else has actually made the ride
