• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Spare key

Ok guys, we all laugh at the stupid questions people ask about the spyder,
now is my turn to ask the stupid questions;
How do i go about getting a spare key to my spyder? I just got one,
The next question is; How do you guys keep from losing the key?
There is no hole to put a keychain or anything to find the key easier if you drop it,
Do you guys see anything wrong with drilling a hole on the top part of the key to put a ring to it?
i was planning to drill right where the silver spot is, am i gonna mess up anything?

I asked about drilling that hole. Don't. The key is electrically mated to your ignition and drilling could disrupt that circuitry.

Options;
1. My RT came with a spare. SWMBO carries it.
2. Order a spare $$$.
3. Hyde it IPS(In Plain Sight) contact Lamonster for this option.

If you bought your Spyder new the dealer should have given you two keys.
Any way you can drill the key at the spot you show but very carefully, there is a chip in the key,just below that spot.
A dealer can code a second key for you, the price some have paid varies from 35 dollars to 150+ dollars.

Thanks, now that i know there is a chip there,,, i don't know, if i drill there and eventually the chip gets wet,, i still think they could have done a better job with the key:sour:

The Spyder comes with two keys, and two sheaths into which the key can be inserted. The sheath has a place to attach a key ring. If you bought your Spyder used, you will probably have to order a key and the sheaths, and have your dealer program the new key. If you bought your Spyder new, the dealer owes you another key and two sheaths.

I KEEP MY KEY IN THE SHEATH THAT IS FASTENED TO A LANYARD THATI WEAR AROUND MY NECK I FIND THIS VERY HANDY.wHEN ON A TRIP I HAVE THEM BOTH AROUND MY NECK ON SEPARET LANYARDS IN CASE I LOOSE ONE

My spare is in the sheath and wrapped in plastic wrap. I have taped that to the underside of my glove box with gorilla tape. So far it's stayed up there quite nicely. When you open your glove box, you can't see it. This obviously contemplates that you don't lock your spyder.

Anybody has pictures of the key" pierced"?
I went to the dealer today and they had one key, bought the key for$32.50 and the programing cost $25,
spending $50 is better than being stranded because you lost the key and you have no spare

I had a spare key made at my local locksmith. Although this key will not start my Spyder (hidden in a magnetic holder under Spyder) it does give me access to the trunk and seat. I have my spare key inside my tool bag under the seat.

I did the same thing with spare non programmed key to open trunk,etc but it is thin enough to keep in my wallet. Keep real key in trunk. Also had an extra "real" key made and programmed for $ 85 to give to my ridng buddy just in case I lose my wallet. I was paranoid:D

ICE's suggestion is similar to my choice.

I ordered two extra keys/sheaths, had the dealer program the original two from purchase, and the two new. four total programmed...

my wife made me give her one, the second is placed within the bike, the third is on my keys; and the fourth is at home. I had a local locksmith cut a standard key to simply unlock the trunk and ignition. while it won't start the bike; I have access. and the standard key is on me.

total cost: $64.00 for two programable keys and a standard key

I am a locksmith and my :f_spider: came with only one key also. You can go to the dealer and get a key and have a local locksmith cut and program it for you. No it is not $2 for the key, the dealer price for the key + $40-60 for the locksmith to cut and program (he needs the cam-am there to program key to :f_spider:. Call your local locksmiths to see who can do this not all do the new transponder work. There is all so an after market key blank that can be programed to work blue head and has a key ring hole in it. Yes you can drill a hole in the head of your existing key and it should be ok but until I got a couple of backup keys I would wait just in case... If you can not find a local locksmith that can help try Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA.org), or ClearStar.com they both have a find a locksmith section on their websites.

The Spyder key programing procedure uses a dealer master key to program the key to the spyder. How would a locksmith do this? I think it would be unlikely that a locksmith would have a specialised key for this or am I wrong and there is a standard master key for the industry?

Thanks

OK do not trust a professional locksmith, I get it I am a dumb locksmith that does not know anything... I am a :spyder: ryder that has 1 plain metal key just to open things and 2 aftermarket keys that start my :spyder:. As for programming the after market keys to the :spyder:it is called cloning and they just copy the electronics in the original and clone it to the aftermarket key (real simple if you have the aftermarket key and the equipment to clone the electronics). Not all locksmith (myself included) have invested into this technology it is the same for the newer cars.

It works!!!!:ohyea:
i took a $55.00 chance, i drilled the key 1/8th of an inch down from the top, i didnt feel any hard stuff,, put the key ring and tried it, it starts the:spyder:,,,, now it will hang with the rest of the keys and it will be easy to find!!:clap:

Hope somebody can benefit from this experiment!!:2thumbs:

I thought about drilling a hole to insert a key ring but decided just to use the BRP key holster. Didn't want the key ring flopping around in the wind.
