• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Spare Key Cost for 2016 RTL?

My local Can Am dealer is the first place I tried and as yet, one week later, they "think" they can make a clone but don't know if they have a blank in stock. These guys are pitiful!
I agree. The dealers don't need to do any cloning if they're talking about a Can Am key. First thing is the new blank one has to be cut. Then, for 2013 & earlier, they use a master key and all your keys, max of 4, to program them into the DESS module. For 2014 & on they program the key into the DESS using BUDS, up to a max of 8 keys.

2013 and earlier keys can be cloned using an Aprilla key. A locksmith copies the codes from an existing key into the new one. The DESS sees it just the same as the original Can Am key so you can have as many as you want. They all look like one key to the DESS. I don't think any Can Am dealer can or will clone a key. They only sell genuine Can Am keys.

Just clear up some terminology here. Your BRP dealer will not clone a key. They will get a new uncut blank from BRP. Have it cut to match your original. Then plug a computer into your Spyder and program your Spyder to accept it. The BRP key cannot be made into a clone. It's transponder code is set and cannot be changed.

When cloning a key. The key blank will come from a aftermarket supplier. It will contain a special transponder chip that can be programed to pretend to be one of your original keys. No one has posted successfully doing that with a 2014 or later key.

Correct, i won't work

Sorry, Ilco X270 works perfectly in the 2015 and up Spyders. Have some myself and have made some for customers. Why would you think they would not work?

If you disable DESS you can carry a spare key in your billfold for those awkward senior moments like dropping your keys in the frunk just as you are pushing the lid closed.....

It seemed unusual that the X270 wouldn't work. On my '14, if you look at the picture, when I compared the length of the X270 and the Can-Am key it was immediately obvious that in order to make it work in the ignition switch to unlock the frunk or seat I had to bevel the edges so that when I pushed down on the key it went alway to the bottom so the key could be turned left or right. If not beveled it will only unlock the trunk. Like JC said, mine lives in my wallet.

Same here.

:agree:
You can no longer clone keys for the newer bikes... :banghead:
Sorry boys!
:shocked::shocked:

something not right on what I'm reading?????????? two girls from our NISR (Nebraska Iowa Spyder Ryders) group were riding back from Spyderfest and broke the key off in the ignition on a stopover in Kansas City. they found a local locksmith who came to their hotel site and fixed/removed the broken key, made two new ones and off they went for home.

Curious. ....🤔

In all this question is do the dealers program the keys for free. I have had several keys problem with the kids and though the blanks are easy enough to find and cut to match the programing for many were well over $100.00. Mind you these are auto dealers and the classier the car the more it will cost. Daughters Audi TT was $364.00...:yikes: but did have all the remote stuff but still......

But what model year were they ryding?

Making a new key to replace a broken key is simple enough. Cut a suitable blank. Cut the chip out of the broken key and insert or attach it to the new key. Done.

Making 2 new keys. That's a little different. Locksmith would likely have to make clones. 2013 and earlier easy enough. 2014 and later still should be able to do it. Very different equipement.

I believe I was the first to post on Spyderlovers that I made a clone key for my Spyder. Before that everyone said it could not be done. I think it is the same for 2014 and later. Just because no one has posted doing it. Does mean it can't be done.

My 2013 only had 1 key and the second key had to be laser cut and programmed by the dealer for a total cost of $150.00.

Actually, it didn't... nojoke
For a 2013: you could have had a cloned copy made of your original for less than $25. :banghead:

You are correct, but there is something to be said about having a spare original. My used 2013 came with only a single key. I had a new key programmed at the dealer, and then purchased a cheap clone. I travel with one of the programmed keys and the clone as a spare. The second programmed key stays at home in the event I lose the original master, since you can't get a new key programmed if all you have is a clone.

What city. I will stay away from them

202 & Gilbert.

I don't normally bash companies but these guys are infuriating! It took a week, one email and two phone calls to get a response that they had the key blank in stock. I get there today and it is a 2013 key - no workee on 2016. Had to special order the blank and wait a week to get it programmed and cut. They charged $133 for blank, cut and programming. I'm betting it takes less than 5 minutes of a tech's time to program the chip but they get 30 minutes full labor cost.

This isn't rocket science!

My spare for 2019 cost $49 plus $72 for programming. Still have to get it cut bu local locksmith.
They programmed it before it was cut? Not sure that can be done. The ignition needs to be turned on to program and I'm not sure you can read a second key while a different one is in the ignition.

Haven’t done the programming yet, the dealer said it had to be cut first to make sure it worked in the ignition switch. The quote was for $72 for the programming after I get it cut. Haven’t got around to doing the two step process of cutting the key and then going to the dealer for programming.
