There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Some thoughts on Farkles! 2012 RSS

Hey guys!

So some of you may have seen my recent introduction to the forum thread yesterday. I wanted to make another to discuss some aftermarket mods.

Some of the farkles (btw...awesome word... Fancy Accessories Really Kewl Likely Expensive - LOL love it!) that I am thinking about are:

:ani29: First and foremost - aftermarket exhaust for sure - thinking the tailgunner! Maybe RLS Punisher :yikes: I don't mind louder exhausts! My one neighbor has an insanely loud Harley (sounds awesome!) and my other neighbor has a freakin Shelby Cobra with straight headers. I think it's safe to say even if I went with the Punisher I would not get any negative attention in the neighborhood! My DD cager is catless V8 Audi S4 so everyone on the block is loud!

Question: I actually love decel popping and would love it if my Spyder did it. I know it does not hurt anything and is a product of running slightly lean. My friend's uncle had a dodge viper and it would decel pop like whoa and I just thought it was the most badass thing. I know some find it annoying. Whatever exhaust I go with, it'd be major bonus points if it contributed to decel popping. Any have any thoughts on how to tune towards it?

:ani29: Possibly an intake or at least K&N filter. I'm a little concerned about running TOO lean though if I do an intake and exhaust without a fuel management controller. A little popping would be great but too much would not be great and running that lean I'm sure could have future implications for trouble, maybe?

:ani29: Possibly a back rest for the fiancee when she rides with me

Question: are there any models that you can attach to an RSS and then take off when she isn't riding with me?)

:ani29: Possibly a bigger windshield. I have extensive ATV riding experience which is why I know I will love the Spyder. I've ridden ATV's with no windshields and ATV's with nice big windshields. I do like the big ones and don't find them obtrusive at all. I do find that they can make the bike look less sporty. That is my main concern with the RSS. It is pure sex on wheels. I'm not sure if there are any aftermarket windshields that are a little bigger but don't affect the sexiness of the looks of the RSS. What say you guys!?

Here is my last question...for the performance junkies...what is the standard mods to get the most performance/horsepower/acceleration out of the spyders? For instance...with lots of cars...chip, intake, and exhaust are the benchmark for standard performance items. Besides something crazy like a forced induction turbo kit...is there really much more that we can do besides a high performance exhaust, a K&N filter or maybe a KewlMetal intake, and a fuel controller? Is there such a thing as a chip or ECU tune for Spyders? I ask because I know for a fact that the same V Twin is used in the Aprilia bikes and makes 135hp as opposed to our detuned 106hp versions.

Any way to unlock some of that tuning? Also...anyone know why BRP detuned the Spyder's V Twin so much down from the Aprilia versions?

Discuss on!

BRP actually has a pretty darn nice backrest for your application... :2thumbs:
The Madstad Windshields get rave reviews... but BRP also has some options... Along with handlebar risers. (A nice option, once you take the wind off of your chest!)
You can probably google up the differenct exhausts on various Youtube videos; it'll give you an idea of what they sound like!

Keep in mind that the only two know cures for farkleosis:
Bankruptcy

Death at the hands of an enraged Spouse!

I have the tailgunner on my 2011rts widow maker very nice although I have a cat Its not as loud as it would be if it was on a rss.

Jim at smoothspyder has a pretty sweet backrest that converts from a rider backrest to a passenger backrest and supposedly is removable in 5 minutes.

brp's backrest is also awesome and very easy to remove, but you have to buy the sport rack too, to the tune of 650 or so for both.

My hindle(brp's "aftermarket" exhaust) has some pretty rad decal pop due to a small exhaust leak before the pipe.

JT's air intake is pretty similar(darn near exactly the same) as the kewlmetal intake, is over 50 bucks cheaper, and he is a fantastic site sponsor with super fast shipping.(kewlmetal--not so much fantastic)

personally with my intake and exhaust I'm not running too lean, haven't had them both on together in the heat yet though.

Ive tried six or eight different windshields(I'd be happy to let a couple of them go for cheap), the one I like the best for cold weather/maximum wind blocking is brp's 23" touring windshield, has the little maxipad wings that keep your hands from getting frozen off when it gets cold(like below freezing cold) and it also comes with the wind deflectors that mount on the bike to keep the wind off your legs too. for 300 bux its a bit spendy, but the deflectors run over 200 by themselves so it really isn't a bad deal for how well they perform together(they also have a 25", which I should have gotten instead of the 23).

There isn't anyone that tunes the stock ecu, but there are a couple different fuel controllers out there.
The standard juicebox, not really the cream of the crop.
The juicebox pro.
the powercommander V.
the powercommander V with autotune-the king of spyder controllers-comes with a wideband(or two) and constantly adjusts the tune.

Of course there is the aerocharger system, run a bar of boost and replace your rear tire constantly, but that setup is a cool 5 grand.

Muffler

HMF Performance Series Pipe would pretty much do what you are wanting. I had one on my 2011RSS. Decel Pop, and Acceleration Pop when it was a little cold, and has a very nice tone to it, a bit deeper than the Hindle, but definitely louder. And you could probably get one for less than US$300.00
Cheers

I have the spyder1attitude and it's very loud and I have had countless compliments on the sound. Many will come up to me at gas stations and say " I've never heard a spyder sound like that. That's awesome" I will try and get a video of it.

That's an interesting comment...are you saying that a stock RSS does not have a cat? If not, then why would you think an RSS would be louder with the same pipe vs an rts?

Also...just to confirm...the widow maker is a certain model tailgunner right? Does it indicate a certain design out the back of the exhaust, the things that rotate? Are there any other customizable features with the tailgunner exhausts?

Nice sound for sure...any vids of revs, acceleration, take off, or fly bys? Find it challenging to fully evaluate an exhaust with only idling sound.

Mod one

Get it aligned! That, and a swaybar are the best mods to start. A performance exhaust, filter, fuel management device, a calsci windshield, and then ride it. A lot. You will determine what it needs by riding. More is better! Enjoy!

You know...I have seen quite a few threads regarding this so called laser alignment...is that what you are referring to? What's involved with it? Can any dealer do it?

Also...is your suggestion to say that most Spyders in general are out of alignment and will slightly pull one way or the other?

Last question...have seen a good bit on the forum regarding sway bar mod. Do Spyders come with a stock sway bar, or is a sway bar a mod that is purely aftermarket? I know they help tighten up the chassis for cornering or something along those lines right? Any suggestions on top aftermarket sway bar choices for best price and quality?

Short answer

All of the Spyders I have checked were out of alignment. 100%! I have heard of a couple that were ok, but it is less than 1%. Ride over to Mike's shop and get it done. See the forum page for ROLO address and phone number. Of course, you are welcome to come to Las Vegas; we will Square you away!
Baja Ron makes the Swaybar you need. I put them on all of Ann's Spyders, and she raves about it. Makes a huge difference, particularly if you plan on adding power mods.

Excellent, thanks for the info! Very interesting and strange about the alignment on Spyders and why so many are out of alignment :dontknow:

So what state is Mike's shop in? I'll also check into this ROLO addy and phone number you mention.

I've read a good deal about the Baja Ron swaybars. Ok great...that is what I will go for when the time comes! In your experience and from what you have heard...what is the big difference that the swaybar makes? Especially when, like you said, power mods are done in tandem with a swaybar?

Swaybar

The Ronbar is thicker and stronger. It reduces body roll in turns. ROLO is near Daytona, Fl. A nice ride across for you. I just did a Ronbar today, and he really felt the difference!

Dealer called today! They got in a green 2012 RSS that I've been waiting for! Going to see it wednesday. Hoping it is the one.

Ttt for some of the unanswered questions too

Better shocks is the first thing you should do to any new RT, ST or RS I recommend ELKA's. It becomes a much better ride

Speaking of Farkles...

I've just had a couple of hundred bucks land in my pocket...
I think you guys have convinced me that a laser alignment, and a set of turn signal indicator lights from Reggy might just have to be next...

That is surprising to hear as the 2012 RSS comes with FOX gas charged shocks which I thought was one of the high selling points of that particular model. :dontknow: Are they actually less than satisfactory?
