Small oil leak ?

Top End Unlimited

New member
It seems my 2012 RT has a small leak under it. I thought maybe it was residue from a recent oil change at the dealer before I bought it. It has a small spot under it about the size of a small coffee can lid when parked here at my shop. There is a small hose hanging down but it is not coming from there. But right beside the hose, on the frame rail is where it seems to be. Being new to Spyders, I haven't removed any of the body panels yet to try to see anything. I did put it up on ramps but couldn't get under it enough and everything seems so damn tight. Ok Masters, lay it on me ! Thanks in advance, because I know you will figure this out.

Ok 42 of you read this with no reply. I know it was kind of vague so I will now take off the tupperware and see if I can find it. Don't leave me ! I'm not done with you yet ! LOL!

Pulled off the side panels just to find nothing. My next move will be putting it up on a lift. If nothing there, I'll be taking it to the dealer. Still have warranty left but if it was something simple I didn't want to leave it with a dealer when I could fix it myself.
Thanks for looking at my post !

I honestly don't know what your spyders problem is. I had a situation of a similar leak. Brought it to the dealer and they told me nothing was leaking. I saw the leak. It turned out to be anti freeze from the over flow. Nothing to fix. But that doesn't mean you have nothing wrong. Go to the dealer and have it checked out.

Well..!!

most commonly this ends up being a water pump oil seal leak. But could be a oil leak from the airbox as well which is a simple clean up. The seal is more involved..best pull some coverings to get a better look...

It is a known issue with the 2012, maybe other model years :dontknow: had the same thing and my dealer change the front motor seal(not sure the exact name,Could be as mentioned above) Covered under warranty! Dealer told me that anyone who sees a small leak, should bring it in to have that seal checked and changed!

You seem to have ruled out the usual suspects on the left side related to oil change stuff. So is it dripping from the right side? Take the bottom right pan off and if it is cover in oil, then most likely a water pump seal leak. Take it to your dealer and let them fix it. They do not just replace the seal. The repair comes as a kit with a new water pump, shaft, seals and bearing. Thank the people before us that had this problem. BRP learned that just replacing the seal did not work.

Thanks Chupaca. I pulled some of the covers off, jacked it up halfway to the moon to get my big ass under it. I can see where it is coming from towards the top of the engine, but not exactly where. How do I check the airbox and what am I looking for ? I do have it scheduled with the dealer this Sat. but he won't be able to look at it till next week. Time is getting close for me as we are going to ride the Dragon later this month. (I hope) Anything at all that might help would be great.

It seems to be dripping dead center then running around the center frame.

 Thank you. If I don't get it myself, it's scheduled Sat. with the dealer.

My antifreeze is at the max mark. But I smelled and tasted it on my finger. Not sweet like antifreeze. Dealer bound Sat. I guess. Thanks again.

Pretty well covered. If the airbox is the culprit, the oil seeps out the seam where the upper and lower connect together and works its way down the side, eventually dripping off the lowest spot, which is often the right front corner so that could be your culprit.

If it's the water pump shaft seal, the actual weep hole that leaks is very difficult to see and hard to explain. It can be seen with a small mirror and flashlight but explaining it would take a half hour. However, usually it will leave a few drops on top of the clutch housing in the water pump area, as it drips down from the weep hole. Then it falls off that area and ends up in the inner front corner of the black splash pan. Often you get oil and anti freeze or just anti freeze since the shaft passes thru a mechanical water seal and a conventional oil seal. The shaft and mechanical seal come as a unit because assembling the seal onto the shaft is a precision operation. However, the clutch cover housing must be removed to install it. Moderately big job. I know --mine's been done more than once.

Lastly, could be your oil pressure sensor which is right over that same black splash pan. They can leak and drip. I know -- mine was doing that and replaced under warranty.

Thanks Gypsy, I have the covers off again and I'm going to check the air box. I guess looking in it will be self explained if it is leaking. Wish me luck and thanks again.

CLUTCH COVER MAY BE THE PROBLEM

A few weeks ago I had a puddle of oil underneath my 2012 RT and it turned out to be a clutch cover. My mechanic said they had run into a couple before mine. They part is a cast aluminum part that evidently warps around the flange area on the defective parts. My mechanic said after they put on the new parts they never have any more problems.

:yikes:A friend and I took our 2012 RT's to the Dealer, yesterday because he had a small oil leak. They checked both bikes and both had the same leak around the same clutch cover bolt. They ordered new gaskets and will repair both next Tuesday. My RT has about 7400 miles, his has less. both bought new.
