Small oil leak!

Have been noticing after a long ride, that the next day there was a little spot of oil on the garage floor. Took it in last Friday as the Tech said the front motor seal on the 2012 RTs had some issues and that it would be replaced under warranty. The head Spyder Tech was not available as he was doing an engine rebuild, but the service guy said a senior tech would do it as it was not a hard Job, but had to be done right or the casing could be cracked:yikes: ( hope that is not the case!)? Will took it for a ride yesterday and put my usual piece of cardboard underneath after and there is still a leak. I will be calling them this week as there should not be a leak on a bike with only 7000 KM on it. They are a pretty good dealer who only deal in BRP products. I just hope they will make it right, as coming from a mechanical background, I just can't stand an oil leak! I will take a look at the manual tonight to see if I can locate the seal they are talking about! Any ideas?

The water pump seal on the engine is known to have problems. There is a service bulletin on that. Yours could be that issue, or something different. Small leaks are not a big deal, don't obsess over them.

I had a small oil leak on my Spyder 2010 Model RT-S SE5

When I took it to my dealer for its 9,000 mile service I printed off the following ref a small oil leak for them to investigate it

Investigate

Oil leak drips RHS Rear of Radiator Near the main frame and Splash guard panel

My Spyder (2010 RT - S -SE5) is dripping oil from pretty much the centre of the bike right under the motor. I've gone as far as taking the plastic off the right and left side but can't see anything leaking. I checked the oil level and it appears OK

Possible causes

1- Oil in Air Box (Blow Bye)

2 - Oil leak leak at the gasket where the water pump and attaches to the engine.

3 - Another place to look for common leaks would be the oil pressure sensor--- front

right side of engine

4 - Check the head gasket on the rear cylinder at the lowers point right beside the gas
tank.

All the above information was obtained from various post on this website

They fixed it as it was an issue with no 3 - This was a quick and easy fix - I have not had any more Oil leaks since then and my Spyder has now over 13,400 Miles on it

Hope this helps

Called the dealer today and made another appointment, they were very apologetic that the issue was not resolved the first time. I appreciate the above posts, but for a bike with such low mileage, I do not expect any leaks! Sure if my Camry with 311000 Kms left a spot of oil on the garage floor it could be expected! Anyway, they assured me that the top Spyder tech would be assigned to it. I have great confidence in my dealer, as they have been nothing but great to us, so I am sure they will make it right.:thumbup:

oil filter housing

I was experiencing the same thing, a few drops on the floor after a dealer oil change. I took it back, figuring they got sloppy when refilling, or pinched one of the O-rings. The service manager, knew right away what it was. He said mine was the 3rd one recently. There is a slight imperfection in the casting of the filter housing that allows a few drops of oil to leak under pressure. He changed the housing out, no charge to me, on a 2010 Rt, no problems since. He hasn't had any luck getting can am to acknowledge it yet, but is documenting everything to get them on the same page. I highly recommend Elk Grove power Sports, Forrest runs a great shop!

Thanks very muck regor, I am going this Friday, so I will mention that to the tech! Hope it is as simple as that!

I know you want it perfect but I would leave it alone. An oil leak and a certified dealer trying to fix it lead to the demise of my first Spyder.

Really hope their tech is better then that. I just find it hard to believe that on a brand new bike, I have to live with an oil leak! I could see if it had many miles on but not 7,000 KM. How did it lead to the demise of your spyder and if it did they were responsible no???

Oil Leak

I had the same thing and got all these it's or it's that. Took it back to the dealer and it was the "O" ring on my dip stick fell off while I was checking my oil. When I unscrewed the dip stick the O ring follows the threats down and falls off. Got another O ring no more problems. Let us know if you still have the O ring. You can use any O ring that fits I think as long as it seals good.

They tried to fix an oil leak. Part of the problem is that the dealer gets one rate for paying customers and a much lower rate for warranty work. So first they turned my Spyder into a hangar queen because it was not a priority as long as they had customers paying the full shop rate. When I got it back after 3 or 4 months it would have no oil pressure at idle. I took it back a few times to no avail. I contacted BRP and explained the problem. They told me, not kidding here, to put in straight 50 w oil. I did and when I drained the oil to change it I found a part of the engine stuck to the drain magnet. I sent a picture of this to BRP and they told me to take it back to the dealer and they would tell them where the part went.

Since the part I pulled out had obviously been hit by other parts of the engine, it was bent, and I was having repeated problems with the original dangerous power steering problem I decided to get rid of the bike with the remaining three years of warranty and let someone else deal with the BRP less than satisfactory factory trained techs. By placing the missing part back where it belonged the oil pressure did come up to normal, not that I cared at that point.

Now fast forward to my new to me 2008 Spyder that is out of warranty. I take it in to a dealer to get the rear tire replaced. After replacing the tire, the tech takes me into the repair bay and shows me where my bike has leaked anti freeze and oil on the floor. I told him I thought this was odd because I have an immaculate garage floor and had never seen any evidence of a leak. He told me the water pump seal was leaking and it would cost $800 to replace it since they would have to disassemble the engine to get to the seal.

I did some research on line and it seems this engine does have a tendency to leak oil and anti freeze from the water pump seal. There is no fix for it except repeatedly replacing the seal which may or may not fix it. So I decided to pass and parked my Spyder on my pristine garage floor. I have never seen any oil or anti freeze on my garage floor.

So go ahead and chase an oil leak if you must. It is most likely coming from the air cleaner. This can be prevented by running the oil level a half quart low. I have read nothing that convinces me that BRP has improved its dealer network in five years. One would think the dealers would get better just because they now have more experience. I have seen no evidence of that in my limited dealings with them lately.

My Spyder leaks too................

I wish I could stop the oil leak. It's not much, but I do see it on the floor and under the frame where it is clinging on and dirt sticks. Anyway, the second oil change (that I completed), it appeared when that the dealer's tech either used an existing crush washer or it did not do the job as it was leaking at the plug. I used new crush washers and all the required "O" rings, etc. with proper torque specs. I still see oil - don't know exactly where it's coming from. Therefore, I'm living with it and check the oil on a regular basis. I told the dealer during the last visit and they did nothing to fix it.....

Thanks for the response, but I know the o-ring comes off , saw it the very first time checked my oil. So I always make sure I don't loose it when checking.

Fortunately I think the dealers here in Quebec (at least mine) deal specifically with BRP products and their Spyder tech is quite good. But he was busy the first time I had it in and another tech worked on it. As in time, anytime I have had it in for warranty work, they had it back to me the same day, so I think I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they can get it fixed this time. I think the dealer network hete in Quebec is better then in some of the, states due to part availability etc. Stay tuned!

Picked up the Spyder today, said it was just access oil from the original seal repair, the tech had not cleaned up the access. Service guy said they did a courteous belt tightening as they found it a bit slack. Took it for a good ride and found the vibration that was there around 113 KMH was gone completely!:yes:And when I parked it I checked under and there seems to be no oil drops!:clap:Kudos to Contant Mirabel for making it right! Now If I didn't have this stomach bug the last couple of days, we could be riding. Oh well hopefully tomorrow!
