Slip Gasket ... again maybe?

Spyder has no more steering issues - a good thing! Took it out last weekend and this weekend and both times I smelled exhaust fumes pretty bad. It's not running rough, it backfired a couple times today but it does that now and then. It was in the 50's and not humid. But last weekend on the way home from NY it smelled strong but I thought it was because I was the last in the line of riders - thought maybe I was smelling everyone else's bikes. Today it seemed worse - gave me such a headache, and made me sick to my stomach. I was wearing a 3/4 helmet, my CHAD is on the lowest setting since I'm a shorty. Seemed to really get a wiff when I accelerated or when coming to a stop. I just remember the last time when the gaskets went the bike seemed louder. I can't really say this time if it is louder or not.

I had these replaced at 3700 miles and now I've got around 11,000 miles on it. It's not a gasoline smell. it smells more exhaust - sort of like riding really really close behind a school bus. Could I be due again?:dontknow: I believe when they were replaced, they put the newer brp ones on at the time.

Quite possibly, yes. Replace them with the Honda GL1800 gaskets this time around. They should be good for at least double the time on the BRPs.

Thx, I'll see if hdx can look at this at some point when he's not busy.

Guess I will call my dealer tomorrow cuz I think he has those Honda ones in stock. So what is the standard lifetime of a BRP slip joint gasket?

My first set of gaskets wore out at about 3,500 miles. When I got them replaced, BRP was coming out with a new and improved gasket. Those ones lated about 20,000 miles. They are due for changing again and will be replaced by the dealer when they are fixing my front pulley issue. Our dealer is warrantying those gaskets and when I talked to them about replacing the BRP gaskets with the Goldwing gaskets, they said they could do it but that I might want to keep getting the BRP ones while I was still getting them for free. Sounded reasonable to me as those gaskets never keep me off the Spyder for more than a few hours. When I need them, they order the gaskets and I ride until they come in (about a week or so). Then I get called to bring the Spyder in to get the new gaskets. That work only takes a few hours at most.

Then I shouldn't have blown an exhaust gasket if I only have 11K on the bike? Guess I won't do anything until HDX takes a look. Then I was thinking maybe it was the cooler weather and I'm in some sort of exhaust vacuum as I'm riding. We'll take a look and report back I guess. Also going to mess w/ my CHAD to see if that helps by moving it somewhat.

Since the first set of gaskets, I went to shorter windshields so I guess I can't say for sure that the second set lasted 20,000 miles. When the first set went out, I had a similar experience to what you had. I had a tall windshield which really curtailed the amount of airflow around my entire torso and I ended up doing parts of longer rides while standing on the pegs just to get my head up in some airflow to get relief from the exhaust fumes. After the exhaust gaskets were replaced, I didn't have the issue anymore and soon after that, I got a shorter windshield that allowed more airflow around my helmet. Since then I've ridden with mainly shorter windshields that allow a lot of airflow around my torso and the Madstad has been the latest and best at giving protection while maintaining good airflow around me. Saying that, my current exhaust gaskets may have been leaking for thousands of miles now. :dontknow:

The reason I love my CHAD so much is because it enables me to ride w/ a little beany helmet on in the warm weather. I loved the look of that little BRP sport shield but that meant I had to wear a 3/4 helmet in hot weather and I was so uncomfortable. W/ the CHAD my sunglasses don't feel like they are gonna fly off:2thumbs:. HDX said he'll cut it down a little and maybe round out the edges. But yeah, still going to check the gaskets. I bet they went because in TN I don't remember smelling so much exhaust as I do now.

Smylinacha, I found sunglasses that the lenses tilts down to your cheeks and wraps around the side of your face, preventing the airflow from getting underneath or in from the sides, cause regular sunglasses to come loose or come off. I found them at a buddy's motorcycle appairel store here. I bought the amber lenses instead of the dark, so I could use them day and night. They are about $14.00 a pair plus tax. My buddy races and recommended these sunglasses and I really like them and once on they stay in place with or without a helmet. My hard head has hit the road a few times, so I always wear a helmet.

If you want more information, I can give you his email link in a PM, if you have a hard time finding them in CT.

Thanks for the info - but I have to wear prescription lenses. Well HDX looked at the bike and it's not the gaskets. So maybe it's the cold weather setting in along w/ some air pocket I tend to be ryding in w/ the CHAD and my helmet. Anyway - probably won't ride much now that we might see some snow soon.

I have the EVO 3 w/shield with wings. I take the wings off in the warmer weather, No fumes' But when i put them back on in the winter i do get exhaust fumes, Mostly at low speeds. [under 30] I'm sure at least in my case it's coming from the tail pipe [back draft] I've learned to live with it, But than again i smoke cheap Cigar's. I've been told they stink worse then any exhaust :(

WOW how can any one that doesn't twist their own wrench keep these things running without going to the poor house. It sounds like I will spend more time working on this beast than my Ural!

I'm right now trying very hard to kick my cigar habit - I smoke those Swisher Sweets. Gotta stop - I think it's causing me sinus problems since I inhale them all. Had only 2 last night, none the night before and none tonight.

Probably about the same as your Ural. But you got to admit it's a lot more fun going up hill at more than 65 mph. I'm kind of a nut i'll live with ==/ squealing brakes/notchy steering/oil in airbox[sponged that] The only time i went to the dealer was for the recall. Didn't take it in at 600-3000-6000-9000, I change the oil myself. I'll tell you i came close to getting a Ural, But it was that hill thing that the Ural and i couldn't get over.
