There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Should I Get a Spyder??

Questions

New member
the reason I'm thinking of getting a Spyder is because my mom thinks 2 wheelers are not as safe( keep in mind that I'm 15). I'm hoping to get it by Christmas or my 16th birthday. Is it a good idea? Also what are he rules for a license in California? Is it a motorcycle or car license I need? And if it is a car license, what should I do if I'm pulled over and my Spyder is registered as a motorcycle and I give the officer my drivers license and he doesn't believe I need just a drivers license? Thanks!!

RULES AND LAWS

I applaud you finding this site and asking questions.....I'm sure some of your fellow Californians will chime in on this......I think I know some of the answers but since I'm not positive I won't give wrong info........I would suggest you contact your local Motor Veh Dept. and get some absolutely VALID info............or you can also access them with your computer..............Good Luck and :welcome:........Mike  .... PS, your Mom is correct, the Spyder is safer because it has 3 wheels plus many other reasons.....you both should look on the BRP web site for Can-am Spyders

Glade you are going to join us
You only need a car drivers license if you live in California
The Officers know this and if they don't you can teach them
If you feel you need something to show them then go to the California DMV website and print out the License requirements for 3 wheel motorcycles and carry that in the front trunk [frunk]
Have fun and be safe
Don

Its pretty clear that the safety features of the Spyder would sell to Mom easier than a two wheeler.. Big question is have you ridden one and did you like it.??

Mom is always going to think two wheels are dangerous. Might be better for go off-road with a dirt bike till skills are built then learn street awareness before venturing out on an expensive 3 wheeler. The inherent danger of riding on the road is 1. lack of skills; especially in wet or unfamiliar conditions and 2. the other driver.

So in California yiu don't need a motorcycle endorsement on your DL. A car liscence is all yiu need. So not to hijack this thread, but find the thread on here that will let you win a Spyder for only $10.00. I think that price will make your Mom really happy. I think your Mom may need to Login to win, but what a great way to get started.

:welcome: Based on our unbiased opinions, I also say a :spyder2: is a better alternative to two wheels if you are wanting to please the parents.

If it works out for you, I am guessing you will be the youngest :ani29: owner on the site--at 15. The :spyder2: is one heck of a first purchase for a motor conveyance.

Glad you are interested in a Spyder, but as a 1st vehicle?
Something to learn to negotiate traffic in CA?
Uh.... really, JMO, the performance level is too high.
It is kind of like taking up the shooting sports, and deciding
your 1st gun should be a 44 magnum.
I would really like you to know enough and be safe enough, to stay in the Spyder Community for a long time.

That's a really interesting question. It's easy to understand why your Mom doesn't want you to get a motorcycle. They are somewhat dangerous, especially where surrounding traffic is heavy, and she knows that statistics show that folks in their teen years tend to have more vehicular accidents. She obviously doesn't want to loose you or see you hurt.

But you knew that, and it doesn't answer your question. :sour: So let me try to answer it, since you've asked. My thought is that you would be getting a Spyder for the wrong reason. Here is what leads me to say that...

 1. If you had the proper training on a motorcycle, and learned how to handle it properly and safely, then at your age a Spyder would not be much more safe, just because it has 3 wheels. You would still be subject to the dangers of riding near other vehicles, and the accidents that could happen on either a motorcycle or a 3-wheel trike, as a result of that.
 2. Since you don't even have much experience driving a car yet, you are probably not sure if you would even like a Spyder. My guess is, from what you said, you probably would NOT like it as much as a motorcycle (which doesn't necessarily mean that you should get a motorcycle right now either - even if could convince your Mom.)

If you were my son or daughter, here is what I'd recommend to you. The best part here is that you can spend some time considering what I'm about to recommend, but you don't have to be obligated by it, since you are NOT my son or daughter. ;)

Just like driving a car, riding a motorcycle or a Spyder will be MUCH safer, and you will be better able to avoid accidents, if you get the proper training on how to do it safely. I'd recommend you forget about a motorcycle or a Spyder for just a little while, and learn to drive a car safely (which, as you know, does not stop the day you get your license ;) ). In doing that you will accomplish two things... First you will learn how to interact with other traffic safely, thereby avoiding accidents, AND you will prove to your Mom that you are a conscientious, safe, and responsible young driver. (Maybe she wont worry so much about a motorcycle in a couple of years IF you do that first.)

After that, maybe in just a couple of years, if you still want a motorcycle or a Spyder, there are free training programs that teach you how to ride them safely and how to protect yourself from all the dumb things other drivers do on the road - especially car drivers. These programs are usually sponsored by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and they teach classes all around the country. You learn with both classroom instruction, and by riding on of the small motorcycle they have available to train on. Take one of these courses, and at the end of it, if you pass, you will automatically have your motorcycle endorsement on your license.

THEN, if your Mom allows (and she likely will), you can then decide if you want a motorcycle or a Spyder. You will enjoy either MUCH more then, and you will be a safe rider, enjoying the bikes of your choice for years to come.

I've been riding Quads all my life so I'm a but aware of what I'd be getting into. I've also ridden my Quad while I'm in a small town I stay at when I'm on vacation in Mexico. Police and other drivers have never been a problem but thanks!

Thanks for your input! I'll slowly start bringing up the idea to her! She'll most likely somewhat negotiate with me because of the safety! ( We negotiated when My dad and I wanted to purchase a Quad as well)

Opinions...??

I would get your license (automobile) do a little driving then get your motorcycle license (you don't need it ) but the training and learning will help you a lot, besides if you go off to college elsewhere you may need that endorcement. I always have both....show your mom your a responsible car driver and you will have no problems...

I am glad to see you have been ridding Quads
But remember this:
LA is not like ridding in a small Mexican town
The people in LA will not care if they hit you
They figure that's why they have insurance
I used to live in Redondo Beach when I had my first :ani29:
Sounds like you have been doing some of your homework
Please do not drive on the freeway or at night until you get a lot of practice ridding in LA
I do not want to hear that you got hurt or worse
Like I said earlier have fun and be safe
Don

You have already received good advice. I would add that regardless of whether it is required or not by your State that you absolutely take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course. The course will teach, and train, you to safely operate a motorcycle along with providing fundamentals about driver awareness and scanning techniques, all of which can help make you a better car, two wheel, or three wheel driver. In most states, it also streamlines obtaining a motorcycle endorsement on your license. A Spyder is inherently safer than a two wheel motorcycle due to its stability at rest and also in motion due to its vehicle stability system which provide a suite of advanced safety features. However, I agree with others that you should get a Spyder only if that is what you want to do. You need to ride your own ride and be your own person!
